His work brought the attention of Steve Smith who was operating a building supply store in Antigonish. Chris then joined Steve as head of his sales division, and later was instrumental in the continual growth of that business into The Central Home Improvement Warehouse Company alongside his friend and mentor Steve as the company’s purchasing manager. - Jones, F. Marie
Dartmouth, NS November 14, 1930 - October 23, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Marie Jones, who died peacefully on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Admiral Long Term Care Centre in Dartmouth. A proud Dartmouth girl, Marie was born on November 14, 1930 and lived in Dartmouth her entire life. Marie’s life was selflessly devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was married for fifty-eight years to her soulmate, Dave. The two of them would often be seen sitting on the verandah at the family home on Prince Albert Road holding hands and watching sunsets over Sullivan's Pond. Their love and devotion to each other was beautiful and eternal. Marie had a passion for teaching both within her family and her extended community. Marie built the foundation of her post-secondary education at Mount Saint Vincent University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1951, a Certificate in Education in 1952, and a Bachelor of Education in 1955. She later served as a member of the MSVU alumnae association, including a time as association president. She graduated magna cum laude and wore her Kappa Gamma Pi university medal with pride. Such was Marie’s connection to MSVU that her family established the F. Marie Jones Scholarship in her honour. A highlight of Marie’s life was receiving her Master of Arts in Education from Dalhousie University in 2023, at the age of 92 – one of the oldest people to receive a master’s degree in Canada. Marie was one of the first teachers at Dartmouth's Shannon Park School, and she was delighted to have been described in the School's 50th anniversary brochure as a music teacher. She was a life-long Liberal, an avid gardener, and lover of lobster and oysters. Leaf drives, mayflowers, ocean swims, piano playing and cooking delicious meals for her family all brought her great joy. One of her greatest joys was encouraging and participating in the academic and musical education of her children and grandchildren. Mom loved celebrating her Irish heritage on St. Patrick's Day with large family parties filled with Irish songs and tradition. Marie’s family deeply appreciates the amazing care, and the wonderful support and kindness of the staff at the Admiral Long Term Care Home, including Savita and Christian, in addition to her personal caregivers: Riza, Tita, and Bernadette. In particular, we thank Mary Galliott for her 14 years of compassionate care to our mother. Marie is survived by her four loving children; her son, Martin Jones (Ann) and three daughters; Dr. Teresa Dykeman (Paul), Angela Jones-Rieksts (Mark) and Marie Moir. She is survived by 14 adoring grandchildren: David Jones, Catherine Jones, Dr. Jonathan Dykeman (Meghan), Cassandra Dykeman, Foster Wright, Marie Wright, Meaghan Wright, Markus Rieksts, Cecilia Rieksts, Anna Rieksts, David Rieksts, Joseph Rieksts, Paula Moir and James Moir, and her great-grandchildren Gideon Dykeman and Felicity Dykeman. She is survived by her sisters, Frances Giovannetti and Evelyn Fay. Marie is predeceased by her husband, David I. Jones, her parents, Francis “Frank” and Mary Catherine “Minnie” Martin, her in-laws, Alexander William Jones and Lillian (Lyons) Jones, her brothers Gerry Martin and Jimmy Martin, and by two beloved and beautiful children: David Martin Jones and Paula Jones-Wright. Visitation will take place Friday, October 25th, 2024, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street. - Stewart, Ronald Daniel Dr.
Halifax, NS October 11, 1942 – October 21, 2024 Ronald Daniel Stewart, CC, OC, ONS, ECNS (hon), BA, BSc, MD, FACEP, FAEMS (hon), DSc (hon), LLD (hon) Dr. Ron Stewart lived the last weeks of his life with the same grace and wit that had seen him through the previous eight decades. He always said he has the “biggest family in the world.” That family and the world will miss him terribly. Ron, one of the most prominent emergency physicians of his generation, joked with one friend that he was lying “not quite in state” at the Halifax teaching hospital where he had tirelessly walked the halls six decades earlier, as a Dalhousie University medical student. Throughout his final days, a steady flow of people brought him comfort through their love, support and heartfelt words of gratitude, honouring the extraordinary impact he had on their lives and his remarkable legacy. Ron ‘s work has had a world-wide impact. Here at home when he was Nova Scotia’s Minister of Health, he introduced a modern Emergency Health Services program which had a lasting impact, as did his lengthier career as a professor and clinician in Halifax. The medical students he taught, the colleagues he mentored, the students he housed at home near Dalhousie University all shared a common bond in recognizing his compassionate and inclusive care for all who needed help. Ron lived those core values as passionately as he cultivated them. A lifelong lover of the arts, Ron first majored in languages and history at Acadia University, and he firmly believed that a well-rounded educational program provided a better foundation for understanding the art of medicine. In 2004, he took on the role as Director of the Medical Humanities program at the Dalhousie University Medical School. Even before that appointment, he shared his own lifelong passion for music, by founding The Dalhousie Medical School Chorale and its smaller chorale groups. He believed that he was fortunate to be admitted to an emergency medical residency program in LA in 1972, years before the field was recognized as a specialty in Canada. A quirk of fate assigned him to a new role as script advisor to TV medical shows in the entertainment capital of the world, where he became known as ‘Doc Hollywood’. Ron was next asked to train an early generation of paramedics in LA. In the heart of the action on LA streets and freeways, he said he learned more from his students, many of whom had served as medics in Vietnam, than they did from him. During those busy evenings and long nights, he wrote the famous instruction manual, complete with his own stick-man illustrations for prehospital care. His LA paramedic program and his mimeographed manual were legendary and served as a vital resource for prehospital care in the US, UK and Australia. Ron’s contribution to the development of modern emergency medicine, and the education of its practitioners, earned him the respect of his peers and dozens of awards. In 2008, the American College of Emergency Physicians, named him a Hero of Emergency Medicine. At first, Ron was more honored in the U.S. than Canada. However, in 2023, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of Canada – which “recognizes outstanding achievement and merit of the highest degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large.” Ron was gratified and humbled by all of his awards. Among them were the Order of Nova Scotia and honorary doctorates from three Canadian universities. Ron was a coalminer’s son to the core. His mom Edith and his dad, Donald Hughie Stewart, were determined that Ronald and his elder sister Donalda would excel, which meant not only getting good grades and doing good deeds; it also meant treating others with respect in the close-knit coal-mining town of Sydney Mines. Cape Breton. Donald Hughie was a Draegerman, a member of the elite corps of coal miners trained to respond to emergencies underground. He gave Ron his first medical kit, cobbled together from odds and ends of the emergency supplies he took down the mines every day. Later, Dr. Ronald Stewart, emergency physician extraordinaire, would follow his father’s example and heed his mother’s advice - “don’t act too big for your britches”– through a long and legendary career. Ron was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sister Donalda (James) Davis of Stratford, Ontario, and countless friends, colleagues and students. All of them hold Ron close in their hearts, as do their children who knew him as having a cherished role in their families. Ron’s close friends and caregivers would like to express gratitude to the palliative care team at the Victoria General Hospital and visitors whose unwavering care, presence, gifts, and messages brought him so much comfort and support. Join us in celebrating the life of Dr. Ronald Stewart on Wednesday November 20, 2024, 6 - 9 pm McInnes Room, Student Union Building, 6136 University Avenue, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS. An additional gathering in Cape Breton, in December, will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, please acknowledge your emergency medicine physicians and paramedics by a donation to: giving.dal.ca/ronstewart .

- Adams, Kate Elizabeth
Truro, NS October 22, 2024 Kate Elizabeth Adams – 56, Truro. It is with deep sadness that the family of Kate Elizabeth Adams announces her passing on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Kate passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kate was born in Heswall, England in 1967. The family moved to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada when she was seven years old before moving to Gores Landing, Ontario. In her grade 7 year, work commitments took the family to Claremont Ferrand, France for 18 months. The family then moved back to Canada where she spent grades 8-11 at Bridgewater High School before graduating from West Pictou High School in 1985. Kate went on to complete a BSc in Biology from Saint Mary’s University from 1985-1991 where she was also a standout soccer player for the Huskies and in the Sr. Women’s Soccer League. Her devotion to her teammates and her unapologetic competitiveness will never be forgotten. After her first degree, she went on to complete her Bachelor of Science Human Ecology degree from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1996. Upon graduation, Kate became the first Consumer Nutrition Advisor in Atlantic Canada to be employed by a grocery store when she worked for Ryan’s IGA in Truro, Nova Scotia. She eventually decided to embrace a teaching career, and went back to Mount Saint Vincent University to enroll in the BEd program - a choice that would positively impact the lives of many: the students she taught, coached, and became friends with over the next 20 years. As a teacher, Kate was known to be tireless, innovative, empathetic, highly-skilled and deeply respected and loved by staff and students. Family meant everything to Kate; she was an amazing wife and partner for 29 years, proud mother of three children and a loving daughter and sister to her immediate family. She had an unmatched devotion to always being there for her family and close friends, who were the most important pieces in her life. Loved ones will remember her beauty and strength during difficult times, her outgoing personality, her loving yet competitive nature, her athletic ability (which friends consistently pointed out that she passed on to her kids), her toughness, and her dislike for tardiness. Many friends and house guests can also attest to her mastery of adding fun to any gathering with her Jello-shots. She was a role model to many in the community, and an inspiration to those around her both professionally and personally. Though the last few years were difficult, she carried herself with strength and dignity and continued to only think of those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of all her best traits in her children who consistently made her proud to be their mother. They will honor her memory as they move forward without her. She was more than we deserved, and the world will be less without her; her family and friends are grateful for all that she was. Kate is survived by her husband, Rob; their three children, Michael, Leah, Jenna; mother, Jill (Gordie) Holstead; father, Darrell (Sue) Evans; sisters, Joanne (Dennis) McPhee, Nikki Evans; brothers, Andy (Carla) Evans, Dan (Michelle) Evans, Gareth Evans; many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank all the staff involved in her care over the last two years, especially the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro. At her request there will be no visitation or public service at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a local food bank.

She wishes to thank her many groups of friends who stood by her side during this difficult time, especially the “7 Wonders”, “0-100”, “Great Old Friends,” and her Yoga Sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, An Cala Palliative Care or North Sydney Food Bank in Brenda’s memory. Would you capture all the perfume that wafts on the gentle breezes among the blossoms that are home to hummingbird and bee. And please gather all the dewdrops, these glistening jewels of the morning. Gather them with tenderness and bring them here to me. And my heart will then be glad, with an unsurpassing gladness; my soul shall know the peace that flows from happy memories.
