  • Furrow, David Ronald

Halifax, NS February 23, 1954 - October 20, 2024 FURROW, David Ronald. Also known variously as Grampa, Dad, that guy who rides his bike up and down the Bedford Highway, and by thousands of students of Psychology and Child Development at Mt St Vincent over the years from 1980 onwards, Dr Furrow. He died at home on October 20th, 2024, with some of the many who loved him around his bed. His roots were in the Maritimes: born to Jean (McLellan) Furrow and Donald Bertram Furrow in a country hospital in Harvey Station, New Brunswick on February 23rd, 1954, he spent his early years in McAdam and then Saint John. The future direction of his life was determined during the week of September 9th to 16th, 1971, when he came on the train to Halifax to study at Dalhousie with his high school friend John McCleave and John’s older brother David. The three were going to room together, but the elevators in Fenwick Towers weren’t working yet, and they were out on the street. The McCleave brothers brought David along to their uncle’s house, where he found both temporary shelter and a lasting love: Melissa McCleave, who was to be his wife of almost fifty years. And within the week, he had signed up for his first course in Psychology, which was to become his absorbing intellectual interest. His work in the LoLordo Lab at Dalhousie led to graduate work at Yale; a switch to Child Development at Yale led to his return to Mt St Vincent to teach, where he later served as department Chair, Director of Research, and Dean of Arts and Science. His marriage to Melissa brought two sons, Matthew Donald Furrow and Bartholomew David Furrow, whom he loved dearly; and their marriages to Fiona Menzies and Kelly Poon led to treasured grandchildren Kaylin, Andrew, Daniel, and Heather. David was an aficionado of cryptic crosswords, an eager and handy tackler of home renovation projects, and an avid cyclist in sun, rain, or snow. Every year saw him log thousands of kilometres on two wheels. He retired early, while still a physically fit and active man, and enjoyed life as a snowbird, traveling to Tucson, Arizona where he could bike comfortably in the winter to his heart’s content, and spar intellectually (and sometimes, let it be admitted, in dopey juvenile fashion) with old friend Jake (Professor William Jacobs), another product of the LoLordo Lab. Later, stricken with frequent migraine headaches, he began to lose his enjoyment in life. He consulted a neurologist in Toronto, and only then was it discovered that he had advanced lung cancer, with metastases in the bones and brain. The fourteen months that followed were an onslaught of surgeries, radiations, and medications to control the disease, but also an outpouring of love and compassion from family, friends, doctors, nurses, caretakers, neighbours, and strangers on the street. Looking back on his life near its end, he reported feeling pleased, particularly by his marriage and his children, both of which he had always felt were his priorities. He also leaves behind beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and his brothers and sister Edward (Sandi Setter), Sydney (Jane), and Lona (Rob Murray); brother Timothy (Janet Brown) died before him. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Rook in the Rosaria Building at Mt St Vincent University on November 9th at 2:00 pm. Further information (including link to a video livestream) will be posted at https://tinyurl.com/dfurrow . In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust or to a university of your choice.

  • Pezzareallo, Michael Todd

Sydney, NS July 16, 1974 – October 15, 2024 It is with our most deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Todd Pezzareallo (dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and dear friend) on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Born on July 16, 1974, in Sydney to Louis Pezzareallo (late) and Catherine (Fixott). Michael—affectionately known as “Pezz” or “the Candy Man” was a beacon of joy, always sporting a warm smile that radiated his genuine love for life and the people around him. His heart was too big, and he poured it into every relationship, finding happiness in the simple act of giving. An avid lover of the outdoors, he embraced every season with enthusiasm, whether he was camping under the stars, snowboarding down a slope, or kayaking on serene waters or swimming. In his youth, he loved playing on the flat part with his friends, daredevil skateboarding, sledding down the hill behind Kennedy Avenue, and catching air. With an infectious passion for life, Mike illuminated the forest around him on purpose as brightly as he did the hearts of those he loved. As a teenager, he was the epitome of charm, meticulously applying his favorite cologne and dressing to impress. Music was his solace, such as his passion for Pearl Jam was so profound that he wore out the very CD. As an adult, Mike’s pursuits in forestry, welding, and carpentry reflected his hands-on nature, while his love for travel expanded his horizons. A neat freak at heart, he took pride in his collection of sunglasses and adventures with Tracy on the Mira as well as his many expeditions with his son Luka, sleuthing and combing for sea glass. His humility belied the profound impact he had on others, as he generously shared his kindness and joy with everyone around him. Michael's legacy will forever shine through his son, Luka, and the countless memories we all hold so dear. He was a legend and we are profoundly grateful for him. In his memory let us carry forward Mike’s light igniting happiness in others and let these actions spread like wildfire, just as his love and laughter did with all of us. Michael leaves behind his beloved beloved son Luka May-Pezzareallo and his mom Danielle May, Michael’s mother Cathy, two brothers, Rob (Vicki) and Chris (Sherry), along with numerous nieces, nephews, his many many friends and his beloved, Tracy Fraser. As we mourn this incredible loss, we take comfort in knowing that Michael is at peace, embraced by the loving arms of Jesus and reunited with his best friend, his father Lou. Charlie died peacefully while surrounded by his family after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. Charlie was born on January 24, 1939 and raised in Beauly, St. Andrews by his parents Catherine (Cameron) and Dan R. Punch. As an adult, he was fortunate to connect with his birth family in Drummondville, Quebec and Arichat, Cape Breton. Family, both biological and those connected by love, meant the world to him. Dad was a man of great faith and had a very strong sense of community, providing many years of service to St. Peter’s Parish and Tracadie & District Volunteer Fire Department. Being a founding and lifetime member of the Fire Department was one of Charlie’s proudest accomplishments. Additionally, Charlie dedicated many volunteer hours to the St. Peter’s Parish Council, Holy Name Society, and Beaver’s Club. He was very generous with his time and always willing to help neighbours and friends in need, offering his carpentry skills, tools, or advice, whether it was solicited or not. Since 1987, he dedicated himself to his carpentry trade after earning his certificate in carpentry and becoming a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union. He enjoyed his time spent in the woods harvesting Christmas trees and pulpwood from his property near his beloved camp in Beauly. So many fond memories were made at the camp with family and friends over the years, including a 40-year annual hunting tradition with lots of whiskey and laughs. Dad loved fiddle and Newfoundland music. He and Mom could often be found at a Ceilidh, kitchen party, or Newfie Fever dance back in the day. More recently, he could often be found on his evening drive to the garage in Monastery to catch up on current events, or spending time in his garden, feeding the birds, or on his prized John Deere tractor.
