  • ROSS, Muriel Eleamore

Dartmouth, NS June 21, 2024 Muriel Eleamore Ross of Dartmouth N.S. died peacefully on Friday June 21, 2024. She was 103 years of age. Muriel was originally from Upper Canard, King’s Co. N. S.  She was a devoted daughter, loving sister, caring aunt, loyal friend and proud Centenarian. We who believe in the risen Christ, as Muriel did, have the hope of eternal life, of waking from death’s short sleep, to our heavenly home.  We are confident that Muriel now sees her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ face to face. Muriel will be greatly missed.  She had a quick wit and loved to laugh. She was caring, kind and charitable, a person who liked a good joke. Our aunt was a giver, she rarely sought things for herself. Muriel was predeceased by her parents Daniel D. Lewis Ross of  East Preston NS  and Mary Eliza States-Ross  of  Mount Denson NS who together set a strong example of how hard work overcomes  harsh life circumstances. Muriel was also predeceased by her brothers, Arthur, Douglas,  Albert, Lawrence, Eugene and Norris, as well as her sisters Gertrude Ross-Johnson  and Alice Ross-Izzard. She is survived by her younger sister Marilyn (Tiny) Ross, Winnipeg, many nieces, nephews and her dear friends. Muriel saw many changes during her 103 years. She was accepting of change and learned to adapt and bend, in the face of life’s challenges. Muriel always worked hard starting at age 12 when she left school to contribute to her family. Muriel first worked as a domestic earning less than a dollar a day. I once asked my aunt if she would like to see a movie that was playing called The Help and she replied “no” firmly  because she said, “I was the help!”   She worked several years in Ontario, and one of the jobs she enjoyed was sterilizing needles, at a large hospital.  Many of her work years were spent as a food services employee at CFB Shearwater. Muriel loved family get-togethers,  a game of Scat and Bingo.  She chose to remain single; she was strong and independent.  She very ably filled the role of aunt and great aunt to her many nieces and nephews. In addition to  her family  Muriel leaves behind a number of very dear friends at Edgemere Manor, Dartmouth, and her close and oldest remaining friend in Mahone Bay. Since 2020 Muriel lived at Parkstone Enhanced Care, where she received compassion, kindness and quality care from the Nursing and other staff of Fleming Way. At 99 years of age, while still able to drive a motorized wheelchair Muriel was required to take an on site driving test. There were questions about her driving abilities with her advanced age. We all marveled at her skill as Muriel successfully maneuvered her motorized chair through the improvised testing track. To all Nursing, OT, Recreation and other important staff of Fleming way at Parkstone Enhanced Care we sincerely thank  you for the many things you did to make Muriel’s final years as good and positive as they possibly could be. Muriel’s Celebration of life ceremony will take place on July 8, 2024 6:00 PM at Dartmouth Funeral Home Ltd. 29 Queen St. Dartmouth, NS

  • POWER, Eileen Michelle

Antigonish, NS September 28, 1944 - June 19, 2024 On Wednesday afternoon, June 19th, 2024, with her two children by her side, Eileen Michelle Power passed away at St. Matha’s Hospital in Antigonish. Born on September 28th, 1944, the youngest of nine children, to Hattie (LeBlanc) and James Purcell. Eileen is predeceased by sisters, Jean Morrow, Genevieve O’Connoll, Helen DeCoste; brothers, Collin Purcell, Mel Purcell, Jimmy Purcell, Gerald Purcell (in infancy). Eileen finished her high school education in Mabou and also completed secretarial training which she applied in Sydney prior to her marriage. Eileen married Fabian Michael Power [pre-deceased, April 2013] in 1966, when she returned to Mulgrave. A source of enjoyment for Eileen included reminiscing at family get togethers, the "spirited" Saturday night card games with the usual suspects at the house, the weekend dances, and of course the after "dance" party that lasted until the sun came up. Eileen loved making people smile and having a good laugh, preferably over a good meal and a cup of tea. An active community member in Mulgrave where she grew up and resided until the mid 1990’s, Eileen’s love of involvement saw her as an active participant in Theatre Antigonish and many volunteer organizations. Always making time for everyone, her sense of fun and ability to tell a great story and relive the best of times made her beloved by family and friends alike. How she loved to talk and get to know everyone she met. She was an artist and musician. Close your eyes and you can picture her at the piano pounding out the latest rock and roll. And if you are lucky, you may have one of her paintings or ceramic art pieces. Eileen is survived by her daughter Faye Power, her son Todd Power [spouse, Lori] and two grandson’s Garrett and Mackenzie [spouse Unity], as well as surviving elder brother, Leo Purcell and special friend Elwin MacPherson. Celebrating a life well lived will be the many nieces and nephews for which Eileen was a significant part of their lives. You are many and if she were here, she’d recount each one of you in detail—the day you were born, all the good times and laughter shared with you and perhaps a few stories you wished she’d forgotten but she remembered because you were so very dear and important to her. Eileen’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Jeannine Munro for her continued care, support, and kindness. A special thank you for all of her caregivers over the years. Visitation will be held in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street Antigonish on Tuesday, June 25th from 7-9pm and in the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place Wednesday, June 26th from 7-9pm. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Lawrence Church in Mulgrave at 11am on Thursday, June 27th with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Eileen will be remembered by all fortunate enough to know her and mostly by those who loved her best.

Born December 7, 1958, Peter was the son of the late Franklyn and June (Slauenwhite) Veinotte. A lifelong resident of Blockhouse, Peter grew up in a time where everyone was expected to pitch in and help each other, a value he always upheld. He was never afraid of hard work. He had a natural talent for working with machines and mechanical systems, and spent over 20 years working in Lunenburg as a Red Seal automotive mechanic after graduating from Lunenburg Regional Vocational School in 1979. Peter had quick-wit, quite the sense of humour and a "tell it like it is" attitude. He was the eldest child of Timothy and Catherine Flynn, cherished brother to his six sisters: Frances, Mary, Carmel, Elizabeth, Eileen, and Nellie, and his brothers: Matt, Jim, and Tim. Joe's early years were filled with fond memories of summers in Norris Arm, NL, and adventures at Red Indian Lake, where his love for fishing began. Known for his passion for fishing and sports like track and field, baseball, and hockey, Joe spent his youth enjoying the outdoors and time with family and friends across Buchans, Norris Arm, and Fortune Harbour. After completing high school, he pursued further education at St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's, followed by several years in Finance and Mining. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Myrtle, at a dance in Buchans. They married on September 25, 1964, and embarked on a journey together that spanned nearly six decades. Settling in Labrador City in 1968, Joe worked at IOCC for 32 years, dedicating himself mostly to the Control room at the Pellet Plant and serving on the Union executive, including a term as President from 1978 to 1982. His commitment to improving conditions for steelworkers in Labrador City was unwavering. Joe's love for Labrador extended beyond work, as he spent countless days fishing on Walsh River, snowmobiling, and enjoying time at the cabin with loved ones. Family meant everything to him. Together with his beloved wife Myrtle, they raised four children and doted on eight grandchildren. His eldest son Donnelly (wife Donna, children Erin and Tyler, great-granddaughter Lauren), daughter Joanne (husband Paul, children Connor and Colby), son Sean (partner Melanie, children Carter and Brady), and daughter Krista (husband Brett, children Melrose and Hudson) were the center of his world. Another important part of his life was Christine, Andre and their daughters, Lea, Manon and Justine. Joe was the anchor of the family, a true patriarch who cherished every moment spent together. Family vacations were a highlight each summer, often involving trips back to Newfoundland to visit relatives and pursuing his passion for fly fishing. Joe fondly remembered the laughter-filled road trips where he happily accommodated requests for hotels with pools for the kids. They also enjoyed numerous trips to Florida and weekends travelling for hockey tournaments. In later years, Joe found joy in fishing trips with his sons and cherished time at the cabin with Donnie and his friends. He particularly enjoyed the lively company of Sean and his buddies, and annually hosted the Boxing Day World Juniors chili party at their house. He thrived on gatherings with loved ones, where shared meals, drinks, and laughter created countless cherished memories. Following retirement, Joe and Myrtle settled in New Minas, Nova Scotia, where he spent the last 16 years of his life. In his early retirement, he cherished opportunities to travel to Ontario to visit Joanne and Sean and spend quality time with his grandsons. Living in Nova Scotia brought him closer to his youngest daughter Krista, and he delighted in frequent visits from his youngest grandchildren, Melrose and Hudson. Always ready with treats and eager to share stories from his childhood, he was a devoted and proud grandfather. He revelled in family gatherings, particularly relishing the chance to host lobster dinners whenever friends or family visited their Nova Scotia home. He took great pleasure in serving guests smoked salmon from Labrador, a special touch that showcased his love for his Newfoundland roots. Joe is survived by his loving wife Myrtle, his children and grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and relatives who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. Predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Catherine; brother, Matt; and sisters, Frances and Eileen, Joe leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering optimism. Despite battling COPD for many years, Joe was known as an eternal optimist who faced his illness with grace and rarely complained. He fought to live until the very end, buoyed by his deep love for his family. Cremation has taken place, as per his wishes. A celebration of Joe's life will be held later this summer.
