Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Carroll) Murphy. John and Julia began their courtship after John and his brother serendipitously had a flat tire while on a day trip to the Valley and were rescued by Julia’s father and invited for breakfast. Our parents' eyes locked and that was it. One of John’s greatest joys in life was sharing time with Julia in the company of their children, granddaughters, family, extended family and friends. In his early years, John peddled clothing, worked in the mines while teaching English for Frontier College, and studied with the Oblate fathers. From 1993 to 1997, he had the great privilege of representing the people of Kings-Hants as a Member of Parliament. During his life, John involved with the Friends of Schizophrenia Society, The Evangeline Club, L’Arche, National Council of Welfare, Citizen’s for Public Justice and St. Francis Catholic Parish. In his spare time, John loved to pick wildflowers, travel, exercise, attend music and sporting events, especially when his granddaughters were involved. He also enjoyed playing Santa Claus and singing happy birthday to countless children and adults over the phone. Most recently, he enjoyed meeting friends and family at Charts Cafe on Saturday mornings where he greeted everyone with a warm smile and an engaged hello. • MCGEE, Robin Anne

Port Williams, NS October 1, 1961 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Anne McGee, age 62, of Port Williams, NS. Throughout her life, Robin’s large spirit demonstrated a rare and precious combination of wisdom, courage, determination, warmth and humour. She was driven by a constant desire to love life and make the world a better place. Robin was born to the late Robert and Jeanette (Wright) McGee on October 1, 1961, in Victoria, BC. At a young age, her family moved to Nepean, ON, where she began her habit of collecting life-long friends and admirers. In her youth, Robin sought adventure in Junior Forest Rangers, Sea Cadets, and IVCF. After completing a BA and a Master’s degree at Carlton she moved to London, ON to earn a PhD in Psychology at Western University. It was there that Robin and Andrew met and hitched their lives together, a perfect complement to one another. In 1994 they moved to the Annapolis Valley, NS and began their family and careers. Robin applied her boundless energy and unique style to her work in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team at the VRH, at The Oaktree/Nexus Centre for Youth, teaching at Acadia University, as author and co-author of many published research papers (which collectively have been cited over 1,000 times), years of part-time private practice in psychology, and ultimately as a Psychology Consultant for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board/Centre for Education. Outside of work she was an active supporter of the "Twin to Win" campaign, coached children’s soccer, and played women’s soccer in the Seven-a-side League. Robin was passionate about the practice of Psychology in Nova Scotia. A devoted supervisor and mentor, she served as President of the Association of Professional Psychologists of Nova Scotia, and Chair/board member of the Board of Examiners of Psychology of Nova Scotia. Following her cancer diagnosis in 2010, Robin wrote and published The Cancer Olympics, highlighting opportunities for improvement in cancer diagnosis and treatment, and inspiring others to take a positive and pragmatic, self-advocating approach to their own healthcare. The book documented her journey, including her orchestration of a grass-roots effort that brought Nova Scotia’s standard of care for rectal cancer in line with the rest of the developed world. The Cancer Olympics garnered several awards, and Robin received hundreds of messages from people thanking her for the impact of her words. She continued this outreach by creating a Cancer Olympics blog, where she shared her ongoing challenges, achievements, and musings, weaving each entry together with a popular song. She didn’t stop there. Throwing herself into volunteer activities related to improving the experiences of others coping with medical challenges, Robin became a patient representative working on the development of improved standards for early detection in Nova Scotia; coached countless people newly diagnosed with CRC through CCRAN; worked passionately with Patients for Patient Safety Canada bringing the voice of harmed patients into healthcare conversations; was a top fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life; served as a guest lecturer training healthcare workers; and was a guest speaker for numerous CBC programs, podcasts, and countless other initiatives. Her contributions were recognized with The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Governor General of Canada, and The Canadian Cancer Society’s Medal of Courage. In her "leisure" time, Robin loved reading, visiting friends and family, travel and camping. She was famous for her elaborate Halloween displays and performances for trick-or-treaters, and hosting viewing/discussion parties for each year’s Oscar contender movies. For the past 14 years, Robin lived with a medical prognosis of less than two years. With her steadfast focus on making the most of whatever time she had left, she defied all expectations, showing us all what an astonishing woman she was. If one could discover and bottle that essence of Robin’s genuine courage and determination, it would be a gift to the world. How lucky are we to have been invited to share this journey with her. Her spirit will live on in our hearts and memories. Robin is survived by husband, Andrew Hurst; son, Austin (Hannah Alpern) Hurst; brothers, James, David and Mark; sisters, Gail, Debbie and Janine (her "Irish Twin"); and her beloved cat, Bowie. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024 in the Festival Theatre Building located at 504 Main Street, Wolfville. A livestream link will be available for those unable to attend on the White Family Funeral Home webpage. Donations in memory of Robin may be made to any of the following organizations that were/are important to us: 1) Patients for Patient Safety Canada, https://www.patients4safety.ca (e-transfers to finance@patients4safety.ca) (Unfortunately they are not yet a registered charity, but they are an organization in which Robin was deeply invested.) 2) Canadian Colorectal Cancer Network, https://www.ccran.org. A registered charity organization which contributed greatly to Robin’s knowledge of and access to options that certainly improved her quality and quantity of life since diagnosis. 3) Valley Regional Hospital Foundation – Hospice/Palliative Care (also a registered charity). https://www.vrhfoundation.ca/memorial-in-honour-gifts/ If you donate as a tribute in Robin’s name, your funds will be added to a legacy initiative to improve options, information, and facilities for end-of-life care. Note: If preferred, donations to the two registered charities can be made through Canada Helps. • MacDonald, Isabel Mary

Bridgewater ,NS August 20, 1993 - May 16, 2024 Isabel Mary MacDonald passed away at age 30 on May 16, 2024, in Gatineau, Quebec, while living in Ottawa. Left broken-hearted are her mother, Mary MacKenzie, and her brother, Andrew MacDonald (Brooklynn Lane) of Bridgewater. Isabel was born in Ottawa on August 20, 1993, into a military family and also lived in Winnipeg. As a little girl, she attended French Immersion in Russel, Ontario and enjoyed gymnastics. In Winnipeg, her passion was ringette, and she loved basketball and Cubs/Scouts. She had mad skills with a jump rope. Camping was her favorite family activity, where we explored Western Canada and made frequent trips to Nova Scotia to visit family. At age twelve, she came to live in Nova Scotia, where she and Andrew went to Bridgewater Jr/Sr High. With her big personality, she made many friends. If you were her friend, you had someone who made you laugh, gave a listening ear and was fiercely loyal. She did not judge and forgave easily. With her huge heart, she loved her family, especially her precious nephew, Kyson. Her smile was huge, and she was proud when she talked about him. Forevermore, Kyson has a guardian angel. Isabel’s Aunt Debbie (MacKenzie) Thibeau, Uncle Bob Thibeau, Aunt Sheila MacKenzie, and cousins Julie, John, Michelle, and Louis, all of Ontario, are also left to mourn. Isabel struggled with the illness of addiction. It had a grip on her, yet she didn’t dwell on the negatives or give up even when, by any measure, her life was very hard. Isabel made a courageous, determined effort near the end of her life, which was a precious gift for her family. Many hours were spent on the phone between Ottawa and Bridgewater as she spoke of her dreams of a career, children, and the hope of remaining drug-free. She had emphysema and passed away from severe pneumonia. We will lay her to rest on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. in Brookside Cemetery in Bridgewater. Pastor Brooklynn Lane will officiate, and a reception will follow. Feel free to wear bright colours. In her memory, please consider donating to Souls Harbour Mission or going to GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/celebrating-the-life-of-isabel-macdonald or just hugging someone you love.

  • MACLEOD, Hugh Allan

Antigonish, NS June 8, 2024 Hugh Allan MacLeod, of Jimtown, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, and formerly of Truro, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2024 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, two days shy of his 81st birthday, Born in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of the late Dr. Lloyd MacLeod and Marjorie Edwards MacLeod.  He was also predeceased by his younger brother, Cameron MacLeod who died in a tragic airplane crash in 1974. He fought Parkinson disease long and hard, which should come as no surprise because he loved life as much as he loved people.  He wanted to hear your stories, whether you were a son, a neighbour or a random stranger, and he had more than a few of his own to share. He would tell you about getting all four wheels of a Ford Bronco airborne.  And he would tell you tales about spring canoeing with his friends in Kejimakujik and the series of events that would precipitate the various wounds he’d return home with at the end of the canoe trip – like a split nose that was stitched onsite with a darning needle. Hugh would tell you about ‘Little Joe’, the horse of his childhood in Liverpool, or his beloved dog, Kadziat – animals, children, dancing until the band called it a night, and laughing big; winter-skiing and water-skiing with the boys and his long-time friend, Roger. In the summer, he was the first to dive into the cold spring ocean waters. He was also a gifted pianist. Hugh loved it all. Hugh attended Mount Allison University and St. Francis Xavier University, earning a BA in sociology.  In 1970 he moved to Halifax where he worked for a year as a crew member on the sailing vessel, Bluenose II.   After working as a manager of Sherman Hines’ photofinishing plant, Hugh went out on his own and established a photoshop, Quick Photo, in Truro, which he operated for thirty years. He wasn’t long retired before he was back to work, driving a school bus, a job that filled his days with bright young faces and stories to tell for decades.  Hugh served as Group Committee Chairman at First United Church in Truro and volunteered for numerous business and community groups. Hugh is survived by his cherished wife Marilyn "Lyn" (MacIntosh) of 52 years; sons, Cameron (Magnhild Nordal), and their daughter, Una, Bergin, Norway; and Brenton, Antigonish; and sisters, Joanne (Carl) Holm and Shelley MacLeod.  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Diane (Harold) Henriksen, Andrea (late John) Holland, and Carol MacIntosh (Norm Loosen), whom he considered his best friends; as well as many nephews and nieces and their families. Cremation has taken place, and funeral service will be held on 10 July at 11:00am at St. James United Church, Antigonish. A celebration of life will be held in Liverpool, N.S., at a later date. The family thanks the hospital staff at St. Martha’s and the patient support staff who sat with Hugh day and night for the past 10 months. A special thanks to Noble who could make Hugh laugh, even in his final days. Hugh’s smiling eyes and booming laugh will never be forgotten by the many who were fortunate to have known him.  We miss you Hughie – hold a spot on the dance floor for us! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James United Church, Antigonish, or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish.  Online condolences: www.clcurry.com
