Halifax, NS
March 25, 1934 - September 24th, 2024
Mom passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, surrounded by family at the Victoria General Hospital, where she trained for a career in nursing and graduated in 1956.
Mom was born March 25, 1934 in Manchester, Nova Scotia to George and Ruth (Hart) Myers. Mom was the second youngest of 6 siblings. She was pre-deceased by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Earle; older sisters Hazel, Gertrude “Gertie” and Evelyn; as well as her older brother Earl. Her younger brother Charlie, of Sackville New Brunswick, is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
After completing school in Guysborough, Mom moved to Halifax to pursue a career in nursing. Mom graduated from the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing and began working at the Kentville Sanitorium hospital for tuberculosis, the place where she first met our Dad.
After a brief move to Alberta to further her nursing career, Mom returned to Nova Scotia, married Dad in 1958, and began the process of having a large family. The 1960’s brought 6 kids to Mom and Dad - Eric, Brian, Darrell, Sharon, Gail and Kevin.
Mom spent her life being the most giving, loving person imaginable. She always put her family and friends ahead of herself. The kindness and consideration she showed to others did not change as the years passed.
In 2004, Mom entered a new phase in life when she became a proud grandmother “Nanny” to Ella, daughter of Kevin and Heather, followed by the birth of Lilly the following year. Mom truly loved being a grandmother, spoiling her grandkids and showering them with love and attention at any available opportunity.
In 2018, Mom experienced the loss of Dad, and so began the next chapter in her life. As her mobility declined, with the help of dedicated family and friends, Mom was able to remain in her house on Poplar St until being admitted to hospital in August. Remaining in her home was always her wish, and we are all thankful that this was able to occur.
Mom was a long-time member of West End Baptist Church. She was actively involved and made numerous contributions to the church community over the years.
A woman of tremendous faith, Mom did not fear what lies ahead. She approached her time in hospital with the grace and acceptance that anyone who knew her would expect, cherishing her phone calls, visits, cards, gifts, and of course the games of Canasta and Crazy 8’s.
Visitation will be Sunday September 29th from 1pm to 4pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. Funeral service will be held Monday September 30th at 11am in West End Baptist Church 1986 Preston Street, Halifax, with a reception to follow. A private graveside service will take place in Aylesford Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission, 5568 Cunard St., Halifax, NS, B3K 4B4 or Faith to Live By, P.O. Box 426 Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2H6 or a charity of choice.
A special note of thanks to the staff of 5A at the Victoria General Hospital. The kindness that was shown to Mom over the last month is greatly appreciated and will be forever remembered.
