- Fancy, Leaman Everette
Hebbville, NS November 18, 1930 - October 15, 2024 It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Leaman Everette Fancy 93, formerly of Hebbville announce his passing at Rosedale Home for Special Care on October 15, 2024. Born to Stephen and Viola (Deal) Fancy on November 18, 1930, Leaman was the youngest of 5 children. Along with his brothers and sisters he was brought up in a big beautiful farmhouse on top of a high hill in Hebbville, built by his grand father. Lillian Vera Miller and Leaman married on September 23, 1954. They were caring, devoted parents to their children Kevin and Rae, giving them wonderful childhoods on the farm, where they taught them to work hard and to enjoy life. Leaman loved his farm and took great pride in the beef cattle that he raised. He began making hay at an early age and continued every year until age 89. Each summer he grew a large vegetable garden and he would generously share his crop with family, friends and neighbours. Visitors were welcomed at Leaman’s home, where they enjoyed lively conversation and a game of cribbage or auction 45’s and always a nice lunch which often included his own tasty homemade Lunenburg county pudding. Leaman was a man of faith, he was a lifelong member of St. James Anglican Church in Conquer all Mills, which he first attended as a child with his mother and father and later with his wife and children. As a young man Leaman loaded pulpwood and lumber on the boats in Bridgewater and Port Williams, he was considered to be one of the fastest at the job. All his life he was a woodsman, he cut and hauled pulpwood, hardwood and logs. He would often be called upon by neighbours when they needed a tree or two cut on their property, he was pleased to do the work and took pleasure in the socializing. Back in the 1960’s Leaman found his true calling when he bought what would be the first of many dump trucks. He was hired on to haul gravel, rock, asphalt or what ever was needed. This work made him extremely happy, very early in the mornings he could be heard downstairs singing loudly while making his breakfast, before heading out to work with his truck. He worked on and helped to build many of the roads in Lunenburg County and surrounding areas including the 103 highway, also S.S.R.H and Superstore parking lots to mention a few. In the winter he hauled snow from the parking lots and salt from Pugwash. He enjoyed a long and satisfying trucking career for over 40 years, and would often reminisce fondly about the experiences he had, and the friends that he made along the way. Leaman will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 70 years Lillian "Vera", daughter Rae, son in law Joseph-Sylvain, sister Jean and nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by beloved son Kevin, and a son in infancy, sister Ruth and brothers Clayton and Percy.Burial will take place on October 25th with immediate family only. Full memorial service to follow on December 6th at 2pm at St. James Anglican Church, Conquerall Mills, Reverend Simon Davies officiating, followed by a reception at the Conquerall Mills community hall. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Riding also his wife and staff and to all the doctors, nurses and care givers at the South Shore Regional Hospital and the V.O.N for the care, kindness and support shown to Leaman during his illness. We thank the friendly, dedicated staff at Rosedale for providing Leaman with excellent care and endless compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leaman’s honour may be made to S.H.A.I.D, S.P.C.A or S.S.R.H. "All the worlds a stage, And the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts." William Shakespeare

- Miller, Joseph Lloyd
Antigonish, NS August 4, 1938 - October 14, 2024 The world lost one of a kind when Joseph Lloyd Miller, age 86, died peacefully October 14th, 2024, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his loving daughters, Meagan Kennedy, Kerrie Roberts, and Erin Holub. Joseph was born August 4th, 1938, in Temagami, Ontario, to Marian Theresa Horton of Canso, NS and Alexander Matthew Miller of New Waterford, NS. He was the second child of what would be a very close, large family of eleven children spending his childhood in Sydney River, and then his youth in Sydney before heading to Xavier Junior College, and then on to St Francis Xavier University Joe was an active and adventurous young person. Nothing escaped his interest and could often be found in his pockets, whether it be a frog or snake. He often shared stories, with a twinkle in his eyes, of adventure and misadventure with his partners in crime, friends, and brothers that spoke to his mischievous nature as a youth. Despite having a fused hip at a young age, Joe was always eager to do everything he was able to, and this often included helping others. He delivered papers and helped shovel coal for elderly neighbours, and he was a top-notch brother to his siblings, helping with lessons at the kitchen table. Joe’s disability would not hold him back. He was a smooth dancer and participated in many clubs and cadets, always helping and getting involved where he could. He climbed mountains, fished out of a dory in Newfoundland, scaled rooves to replace shingles, was pulled by sled dogs and had many other adventures that would astound you. Joe was a voracious reader, and he realized quickly that education was his calling. He earned his B.A. and his B.Ed. degrees from St Francis Xavier University and eventually a Master of Education from the University of Calgary. Joe met the love of his life, Elaine LeDrew, at a dance in North Sydney, only to realize they lived just three streets apart while they were growing up. Eventually, he followed her out west, first teaching in Lethbridge and then Calgary. Elaine and Joe were married on July 16th,1966, in Calgary Alberta. They built a full and joyful life in Calgary with their three daughters. They had a warm and welcoming home where family and friends gathered frequently, enjoying Joe’s and Elaine’s renowned hospitality. They were thrilled to have family voyage out west, including Joe’s brother Danny, sister Patricia and Elaine’s brother David, guiding where they could. Their door was always open, and you never knew who would turn up for an extended stay, be they friend, neighbor, or someone connected to their kids or family members, even the odd stranger or two. Joe was an accomplished and respected educator and administrator for over 30 years, mentoring countless young teachers and supporting students in diverse learning environments throughout the Calgary Catholic School Board. Joe was an exemplary leader who inspired others to be the best they could be, often encouraging the potential in colleagues that went far beyond what they thought possible. Joe took on challenging administrative roles and was recognized as an innovative and progressive educator in each of these assignments. Joe was a strong advocate for Catholic Education in Alberta, helping organize a provincial wide initiative called Spiritus. As a leader outside of his work in education, Joe was a very active member and leader in the Knights of Columbus in both Nova Scotia and Alberta. During his term as State Deputy for Alberta and NWT, Joe oversaw the establishment of more, new local K of C councils than any of his predecessors. He held numerous roles within his own council and was active throughout the province of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, including roles as the Master of the Fourth Degree, and Faithful Navigator to name a few. These roles allowed Joe and Elaine to travel throughout the region and all-over North America to attend events and conventions. They always came home with wonderful stories and new, dear friends. Joe and Elaine were also avid and curious world travellers, sparked by Elaine’s years with Air Canada. They had many an adventure with friends and family around the globe, but they always were happiest making it "home" to Cape Breton on a regular basis to visit family and friends from their earliest days. Joe was a passionate wood worker and had great design vision. He was known for tackling DYI projects while Elaine was out shopping, enlisting friends, daughters, grandkids, and anyone else that showed an interest in "leaving things in a better state than you found them". Joe’s vision extended to the outside environment, and he took tremendous pride in his beautifully landscaped yard, spending countless hours maintaining it and enjoying the many chances to share it with friends and family. Joe and Elaine would save their best project for last, building a home that they had dreamed of and designed, settling in Antigonish and continuing to extend their renowned hospitality, increasing their circle of dear and treasured friends. Joe especially enjoyed the welcome comradery of the ROMEOs and the Knights in his new hometown. Joseph is predeceased by his soulmate and loving wife of 50 years, Elaine (LeDrew) Miller, his parents, Alexander and Marion Miller, his brothers Cyril and Brian, his sisters-in-law, Theresa and Irene. He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands: Meagan and David Kennedy (Purl Brook, NS); Kerrie and Scott Roberts (Prince George, BC); Erin and Peter Holub (Eckville, AB) and his 10 adoring grandchildren; Duncan, Hugh, Angus, Mairinn, Joseph, Bridget, Doyle, Keaghan, Ethan and Nolan, as well as his siblings, Alex, Kevin (Fran), Gerry, Judy, Rohan, Darryl, Danny, and Patricia (Jimmy) and numerous well loved nieces and nephews, not to mention the many dear friends they counted as family. Joe’s family would like to sincerely thank all those who cared for him in his times of need throughout his 86 years, and there were many! Especially in his last number of years, The Antigonish Homemakers and VON who lovingly looked after him at his home; the staff of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home who always made him smile and feel special; and the staff, doctors, nurses, and CCAs at St. Martha’s on his numerous visits and extended stays, who helped him get back on his feet every time until the last. We want to especially thank Dr. Chiasson for his many years of thoughtful care, Dr. Ashong for his compassion upon Joe’s last visit, the CCAs and nurses, especially Mary and Liam, for the respectful and loving care they provided for our amazing father as he moved on from our world. Your generosity of spirit and service to others will never be forgotten or be in vain. May God bless each of you as you have blessed others. Visitation will be held in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish, on Thursday, October 17th from 2-4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Ninian Cathedral in Antigonish on Friday, October 18th at 2 p.m. with Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, St. Josephs. Donations would be appreciated to those who supported Joe so much: St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation, the RK MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation, or the Antigonish VON. Or, please consider an act of generosity of spirit that makes the world a better place as Joe so lovingly did his whole life.

- Clarke, Meaghan Angela
North Sydney, NS July 3, 1984 — October 12, 2024 It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our precious Meaghan on October 12th 2024, at the An Cala unit of the CBRH. Born July 3rd, 1984 in North Sydney, Meg is the eldest child of Steve and Angela (Romeo) Clarke. Throughout her illness and in her final days, Meg was comforted by the love and support of her family and friends. Besides her mom and dad, Meg is survived by her best friends – her siblings – Alanna and Stephen (Shalane). Three very different people, they are united by a shared “weird” sense of humour and the ability to finish each other’s sentences. The love they have for each other is evident to anyone who has met them. Of the trio, Meg has always been the “mother hen” and instigator of many family suppers. Meg is also survived by her beloved niece and nephew: Thea (Meg’s bestie) and Dominic (Meggie’s Boy). Meg made sure their hearts were filled with so much love, and her bank account attests to her inability to deny them anything! Meg also leaves her Gram and Grampie (Eileen and Angus Romeo), her aunts Goretti (Warren), Glenna (Curtis), Marina (Dave) and Kelly (Jody); her uncles Carey (Tanya) and Jerry (Peggy), and her beloved cousins and their families. Meg loved to be with family and she has a lifetime of memories of home and Jersey Cove gatherings. Meg is predeceased by Grandmother and Grandfather (Betty and Jerry Clarke), who we know were awaiting her arrival in Heaven with love and big hugs. Meg obtained her B.Ed from UPEI (2009) and her M.Ed (Diverse Learners) from MSVU. She taught in many schools throughout her career, but she found “her home” as a resource teacher at Glace Bay High. She forged bonds with her students and with staff alike, and we would be remiss if we failed to mention the support and love offered by Aimee, Michelle, Tanya, Jean Guy and Ryan. Meg’s smile and her kind nature will be remembered by everyone whose lives she touched. In Meg’s memory, we ask that you pass on some small act of kindness. Cremation has taken place. At Meg’s request there will be no visitation, and a private family service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Meg’s memory to the Cape Breton Cancer Center, the An Cala unit at the CBRH or to Victoria’s Quilts of Canada. She was brave and just like the sun she kept rising even on days the clouds covered her light.

- Price, Paul Patrick
Ben Eoin, NS March 19, 1951 – October 12, 2024 With broken hearts we, the family, are announcing the passing of the most beautiful human we have ever known, Paul Patrick Price. Born March 19, 1951, to parents Clayton Chester Price and Mary Josephine (Keilty) Price. Paul was born in Moncton, NB, but raised in Truro, where the Price family called home. Paul grew up in a loving family with seven siblings who were a huge part of his life. In Paul’s younger years he enjoyed playing sports and excelled at football, baseball, and swimming. Paul left Truro to attend ST. FX University, however his time there was cut short when he had to return home after the sudden passing of his dear mother, Josephine. Paul began to devote his life to taking care of his younger siblings, Michael and Debbie as well as his special needs older brother, Clayton. It was then that he began working multiple jobs in order to support his family, fueling his passion for entrepreneurship. In 1978 he moved to Sydney, where he purchased a convenience store in Whitney Pier which he named Paul’s Place. It was at Paul’s Place where he began to make sandwiches to feed his customers. He quickly realized the growing popularity surrounding the sandwiches and decided to start distributing them to a few other stores. This led to Paul founding what would become the famous Paul’s Food Factory in 1982. Paul and Cindy took pride in the success of their business and worked so well together. It was one of their greatest accomplishments. They were so honored that after years of working together that they could pass the torch on to his daughter, Jennifer. Jennifer has carried on Paul’s legacy, and nothing made him more proud than that. Paul’s greatest joy was when Jennifer was born to Paul and her mother, Helen Dorrington-Price. Helen always held a special place in his heart as she gave him his one and only princess. In 1989 Paul married the love of his life, Cindy and his next biggest joy was adopting Cindy’s son, Mark. As the years went by, Paul and Cindy created a beautiful life, creating many great memories together. They travelled around the world, played golf, played crib, and genuinely enjoyed every moment they spent together. The love between Paul and Cindy was easy, fun, strong and pure. They made each other laugh every single day. They were blessed with four beautiful granddaughters, Madison, Alexis, Ariah, and Janae, who brought more joy to Paul’s life than could ever be measured. He was the perfect husband, father, and Papa. Paul was always bursting with pride when he talked about Jennifer following in his footsteps. He also loved to show off and brag about Cindy and Mark’s beautiful singing voices. Above all, he was a kind, loving, strong and selfless man. His generosity within his community will never be forgotten and his legacy will always remain through his family and friends. To know Paul Price was to love him, his smile was infectious. He was humbled by the amount of love he received over the years. He was a respected businessman and won the Chamber of Commerce award for businessperson of the year. Paul’s famous pizza burger was named the official food of Cape Breton, which he was very proud of. He was also very proud to have been inducted into the Truro Sports Hall of Fame for with his high school football team. Paul fell in love with golf around the age of twenty and never looked back. Paul was a proud founding member of the Lakes Golf Club, Ben Eoin. He played as many games as he could over the years with his wife, Cindy and loved playing with his Tuesday group, George, Mike and Jim. He and Brad Muise had numerous golf trips which Paul cherished. He and Brad had a special friendship. Paul made many lifelong friends along the way. Being part of his Price family was something he valued so much. He was admired by all of his siblings and was often referred to as their hero. Paul had a special bond with his brother, Clayton. Every year in June they would go away together to celebrate “Brother’s Day”. Paul was more like a father to Clayton than a brother and the love they shared was very special. Some of Paul’s most memorable vacations were the Price Family Reunions, which started in 1978. He cherished the times they all spent together and beautiful memories that were made. Paul valued the many friendships he made over the years. Whether he met them through business or golf, many life-long friends became like family. Greg and Brad Muise, Jim MacRury, George Xidos, Mike Kenny, Bobby Cohen, Roy Nichol, and Paul Gardiner are a few of the men who spent lots of time with Paul over the years on work trips, golf trips and family gatherings. He truly loved you all. There were many important women in Paul’s life. He had a sweet and special relationship with each and every one of them. Paul had a special way of making whoever he was talking to feel important and showed his love. This was one of his best qualities. His wife, Cindy and daughter, Jennifer’s girlfriends all truly believed they were his favorite. He loved each of you, but we know his absolute favorite “girlfriend” was Linda Aucoin. Besides his parents, Paul was predeceased by his sisters, Betty Kennedy (Jack), and Barbara Jewell, as well as Margaret and Shirley (in infancy); brother, Clayton Price and mother-in-law, Marie Marsman. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Cindy Price (Marsman); daughter, Jennifer Price-Sheppard; son, Mark Marsman; granddaughters, Madison (Rayna) Marsman, Alexis Marsman and their mother, Nadine Marsman; granddaughters, Ariah Sheppard, Janae Sheppard and their father, Bradley Sheppard. Paul is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who he loved dearly. The family would like to thank all of the amazing doctors and nurses and staff that looked after Paul along his journey. Our family will be forever grateful for your kindness and compassion. Special Thank you to Jennifer’s friends who loved Paul like he was their own dad, and he enjoyed every special visit from these girls, Tamara Alleyne, Ashley Hareguy and Jamie Best. - MacKinnon, William “Billy” Ignatius
Shenacadie, NS November 18, 1955 - October 11, 2024 With great sorrow, we, the family of William (Billy) Ignatius MacKinnon, regret to announce his passing on Friday, October 11, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. One of eight children, Billy was born November 18, 1955 in River Denys, to the late Howard and Annie Mae (MacKenzie) MacKinnon. The MacKinnon’s moved back to Grand Narrows and lived in the train station. Billy often spoke of the great times he had with family and friends while growing up in the train station. He was involved in local sports such as fastball and running. After graduating from Rankin Memorial School in Iona, he went onto St. FX in Antigonish. Billy felt fortunate to work within his community, starting with the CN train bridge and later serving as Captain of the Grand Narrows ferry. He took great pleasure in being at the heart of community life, engaging with, talking to, and helping his neighbors. Billy often said, ‘what could be better than on the Bras d’Or operating the ferry on a sunny day, having the chance to see friends and family who were home for the summer and working with a great bunch of fellow workers. While working on the ferry, he pursued his education and earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from UCCB. In the late 1980s, when the ferry was replaced by a bridge connecting Grand Narrows and Iona, Billy successfully transitioned to a role as a Caseworker with the Provincial Department of Community Services. His ability to continue his studies while working on the ferry played a key role in his career shift. He built strong relationships with new co-workers and friends and took part in various activities, including baseball. His father, Howard, transferred to Billy an old worn-out house in Shenacadie. Billy moved to the Shenacadie house and was immediately bonded with it, spending the rest of his life painstakingly and lovingly restoring it, board by board. Billy and his partner, Sharon, met on a blind date and have spent the last 37 years together. They enjoyed traveling in Canada and abroad. They traveled to all but 4 cities that host Major League Baseball teams, starting with the Montreal Expos. What gave Billy joy, more than traveling, was spending time with family, friends, and attending events across the island. He was an early supporter of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles hockey team, where he attended many games with his friend Leonard, Sharon, and Sharon’s mom, Phyllis. Billy truly enjoyed trivia with his family members. They enjoyed asking each other their own unique questions. As well, Billy was on a trivia team with family and friends Thursday evenings at the Frolic and Folk pub in Iona. Billy was blessed that people just seemed to like him. He had certain natural characteristics that drew people to him. Billy’s word was his bond and he had an innate sense of fairness and justice that always guided his relationships. Billy had a special relationship with his parents. Billy greatly enhanced the quality of his parents’ lives, especially in their later years, as a result of his devotion to them. Billy is survived by his partner, Sharon Crane, brothers Michael, Francis (Martha), Kenzie (Cassie), sisters Donna (Gillis) MacKenzie, Margie (Cyril) MacLeod, Mary Lou (Neil) Spence, sister-in-law Corrina, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Besides his parents, Billy is predeceased by his brother, Donald, and nephew, Neil. We would like to thank the staff of 4D and the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Billy was a great guy who led a good life, but nonetheless, those who knew him cannot help but feel that we, in the end, deserved more time together. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 4 -7 pm and Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 10 – 11am in St. Columba Church, Iona, followed by a funeral mass at 11am. Interment will take place at the St. Barra's Cemetery, Christmas Island and reception at the Christmas Island Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
