- Green, Joanne Mary
Mahone Bay, NS September 23, 2024 Dr. Joanne Mary Green (nee MacArthur) of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia died peacefully on September 23, 2024 with her family by her side. Joanne lived life with a joyful spirit and leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity. Born and raised in Dartmouth, Joanne was an outgoing, creative and kind-hearted person who loved people, art, all animals, and nature. A competitive swimmer with the Dartmouth Crusaders up to Acadia University, she chose to live her life on the water. She enjoyed visiting (occasionally secret) beaches and watching the sailboats; even buying her own with her husband Scott. In 2021 and 2023, she took on The Big Swim across the Bras D’Or Lakes and Northumberland Strait to support Brigadoon Village, which reflected her belief in giving back. Joanne held a strong curiosity for the natural world, and her love of science reflected her sharp intellect and constant desire to learn. Joanne was an accomplished dentist alongside Scott and their “second family” at Hillside Family Dental, and having always wanted to be a teacher, she became a certified yoga and swimming instructor following her professional career. Yoga became an important source of purpose and spirituality. Joanne’s creative spirit allowed her to share her many gifts through heartfelt notes, knitting projects, beach glass and driftwood art, homemade birthday cakes, and her beautiful garden. She loved to sing, often to her beloved dogs Zach, Max, Uli, and then Tilley, and she recently joined international singing competitions with the Seaside Acapella group. Joanne had a spirited sense of humor, a quick and supportive smile, and a great memory for detail. She loved to travel and was always ready for adventure. Joanne taught us the importance of being present and living in the moment, and that nothing was too small or insignificant to be celebrated. She was a dedicated mother to her children, driving thousands of hours to and from school and sports, never missing a game even in other provinces, and always there helping to navigate life’s challenges and achievements. Her weekly visits to her grandchildren, and the joy she found in being part of their lives, was a testament to how much she cared. Joanne is survived by her devoted husband of 29 years Scott Green; her children Matthew Clow (Lauren Hutton), their sons Gavin and Peter; Stuart Clow (Margaret Schwartz); brother Bruce MacArthur (Dale), and sisters Joan Hensler (Bruce) and Elizabeth (Libby) Levatte. She was predeceased by her parents; Mother Myrtle MacArthur (Hayden), Father Dr. Donald MacArthur, and stepmother Betty MacArthur, as well as her brother Ian MacArthur. Joanne will be fondly remembered by her many cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends. Cremation has taken place at South Shore Crematorium. In keeping with her wishes, she will be surrounded by her family for a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, her family kindly requests that donations be made to Brigadoon Village: http://support.brigadoonvillage.org/goto/JoanneGreen
- Lyons, John Archibald
Sydney Mines, NS June 8, 1928 - September 27, 2024 John Archibald Lyons was born on June 8, 1928, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, the youngest of six children, to John and Mamie (McMillan) Lyons. Because his mother was widowed shortly after his birth and times were tough, his early years were spent moving from relative to relative and town to town within Cape Breton. Through his twenties, John worked in construction and other odd jobs, and enjoyed weekends camping, hunting, and fishing with the boys. In his early 30s, John joined the Seventh-day Adventist church and felt called to become a pastor. He attended Kingsway College (Oshawa, ON), and Atlantic Union College (S. Lancaster, MA), completing his training in theology in 1968. During his time in Ontario, the wife of a coworker introduced him to a friend, Muriel Field, and following just several visits, they were married in December of 1965. The coming years saw two children added to their family, April and Peter. Following graduation in 1968, John took a call to become a pastor in the Maritime provinces, where he and Muriel worked together tirelessly for many years, pastoring churches in Charlottetown, PEI, Perth-Andover, NB, Oak Park, Yarmouth, New Minas, Bridgewater, and North Sydney, NS, as well as Corner Brook, Nfld. John was instrumental in leading church construction projects in three of these locations, Perth-Andover, New Minas, and Corner Brook, bringing together his passion for pastoral ministry with his experience in construction. John was quiet and thoughtful, always enjoyed a good conversation, was an extraordinary handyman, walked at least 3 times a day (until his legs quit working), and always had a good book to read (until his eyes began to fail him). His favorite book to read was the Bible. John passed peacefully to his rest on September 27, 2024, at the age of 96. You might say he died of a broken heart, both physically due to heart disease and figuratively, since Muriel passed away just 6 weeks prior. He is survived by his two children, April (Emmanuel) Hutchful and Peter (Shari) Lyons, 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. We look forward to that resurrection morning when all will be made new. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Minor’s Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines for their excellent care of both John and Muriel, as well as a special thank-you to the North Sydney Seventh Day Adventist Church family. A funeral service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 10:30am on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in North Sydney with Pastor Metard Salomon officiating. Burial will follow the service at Loch End Cemetery in Catalone.

- Lake, Philip (Phil)
Valley, NS September 27, 2024 Philip "Phil" Lake – 85, Valley. It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Philip Lake on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Phil was born in Fortune, NL in 1938, has lived in Valley, Colchester County for the past four years but spent most of his years in Annapolis County. He graduated from Memorial University in St John’s where he met the lovely Ruth Brown. They married a couple of years later and moved to Halifax, where Phil was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. After serving in the Navy, he returned to his career as an educator at Hants West Rural High School (possibly the youngest ever Principal at the age of 22). Phil was Superintendent of Schools in Annapolis County before moving to do that same job in Eastern PEI for another six years. Phil, not quite ready to retire after 36 years, spent one final year working in Brochet, Manitoba. Phil lived in many places in Nova Scotia including Halifax, Brooklyn, Ellershouse, Hantsport, Bridgetown, Granville Centre and Valley. Throughout his career, he also packed up his family and moved to Maine and later Illinois to continue his studies, ending with a PhD from Illinois State University. The best of memories came from the many years at Anapolac Acres on the Annapolis River in Granville Centre. Throughout his children’s high school and university years, Anapolac provided so much fun and so many stories for the loads of friends the kids dragged home: broken screen doors, stuck vehicles in the mud, lost wedding rings and many fun trips out water skiing in the boat. Phil was an avid sportsman and fan. As a golfer (with two holes in one over the years), he was a member of Eden Golf Course, and more recently enjoyed the links at Truro and Rocky Point, Tampa. He loved curling and played for 40 years before retiring to spend his winters in a warmer climate where he traded playing for watching. In Tampa he became an avid Lightning and Buccaneers fan. Phil and Ruth shared a great love of travel, having visited six of the seven continents multiple times, including a 180 day trip around the world, several visits to Australia, and many cruises around the globe. They have lived at their winter home in Imperial Cove, Clearwater, Florida since 1995. When not traveling, Ruth and Phil walked every day to stay in shape for their travels, always aiming for those 10,000 steps. Phil will best be remembered for his love of life, travel, learning, news, and above all, his family. Phil’s many friends and family will miss his fun tales and positive energy, but those memories will live on for years to come. Phil leaves behind best friend and wife of 64 years, Ruth, and their three children, Ande Lake (Janice), Dallas, Texas; Janine Boutilier (Eric), Brookside; Jill Lake (Darren Adams), Fall River; six grandchildren, Drew Lake (Amanda and great grandbaby, Lake), Benn Boutilier (Danielle), Abby Barczyk (Conrad), Dani Chenault (Parker), Will Cutler, Kacey Cutler (Devin Keizer). Phil also leaves behind his twin siblings, Clarence, Fortune, Newfoundland and Eleanor, Aldergrove, British Columbia; many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be planned for next July. If desired, donations may be made to your local food bank in Phil’s honour. Phil’s family encourages you, at the next TGIF or Happy Hour, to raise a glass and toast his wonderful life. "It's been a good run."
- Zinck, John Garnet
Dartmouth, NS March 12, 1942 - September 28, 2024 John Garnet Zinck, age 82, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia passed away Saturday, September 28 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. He was born to John Bennet and Catherine Irene (Kaulback) Zinck on March 12, 1942, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Throughout John’s professional career, he assisted others in many ways. One of his greatest passions was serving for 32 years on various Canadian Coast Guard vessels after spending time as a lighthouse keeper along his beloved South Shore. He spoke fondly about his time at sea with stories and pictures he generously shared with anyone who asked. Among the many places he visited, it was this country’s Far North that had a special place in his heart, whether it was traversing the Northwest Passage in 1967, anchoring at small outports like Pond Inlet and Pangnetang on Baffin Island or traveling to Qaanaaq (Tule), Greenland. After retiring from the Coast Guard, John continued to give his time to others as a Commissionaire for 6 years at both the QEII Camp Hill and Dartmouth General Hospital locations. It was during this time he became very close with the healthcare teams. Later, this helped him to work so well with the doctors, nurses, and staff over the past several months when he entered the hospital as a patient himself. His final retirement came after working as a crossing guard in the Southdale-North Woodside Elementary School area for several years. Talking to students, parents, and teachers made this experience even more enjoyable. He always found a way to make conversation an integral part of each day while ensuring the safety of others. John’s interests helped define who he was. He liked catching up on how well the Blue Jays were performing, listening to classic country and western songs, tending to his backyard garden or making sure the supper-hour news and weather were not missed. His love of visiting family and friends was another of his great pleasures. From his weekend day trips to his hometown to places in the United States, or from the Ottawa area to Cuba and South Korea, John made acquaintances and lasting memories wherever he traveled. John is survived by his loving wife and partner in life of 54 years, Beverley Ann (Dares); his two sons, Kevin (Heejin) and Michael (Kimberley) and three grandchildren who he adored so very much for the wonderful things they have accomplished: Benjamin, Rebekah, and Andrew Garam. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Benjamin Zinck; and, sister Nema Leone (Zinck) Hebb. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of doctors, nurses, and healthcare providers on 5 West at the Dartmouth General for their commitment and unconditional affection they gave John. A funeral service will be held at a later date. In remembrance of John’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the charity of your choice.
