I Am Third: Mrs. Carmelita Forewell By Darrell Young In Life its never about what you were born with or without, its about who you become as a person through your lifelong journey. There are people who rise and there are people who fall during the journey. Carmelita was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia by the wonderful, caring women named Margaret Macdonald. Margaret passed away when Carmelita was sixteen years of age. It was then that she legally took on her mother’s last name, Macdonald. Carmelita moved to Halifax to help her sister-in-law raise her six young children. Who does that but a woman of God, a woman who believes in family. Sally’s family became her family as she helped raise Graham, Charlene, Ian, Patrick, Carmie and Frank. As the six children grew into adults their love, respect for Carmelita grew as they became a big part of her life. When I first met Mrs. Forewell and her late husband Jim over 40 years ago, I was amazed at this ladies’ love for life, for God and that she was at peace with what life has dealt her. Mrs. Forewell never treated me as a son in law but as a son. I remember as a teenager reading a book titled ‘I am third “meaning God, Family and I. This describes Carmelita Forewell better known as Nanny by her grandchildren. Our children, Connor, Mackenzie and Cullen were the beneficiaries of a loving grand mother who loved them to the very end. There was nothing she would not do for them. Her love was unconditional. When they were growing up they had the good fortune of seeing their grandmother every week and most weeks than once; plus there were many, many sleepovers. Mrs. Forewell was constantly present at sporting and school events. Never one to miss her grandchildren’s day in the sun. Those Sunday’s dinners in her small, crowded kitchen were legendary as were her apple pies and her gravy. We were all happy being together, but no one more than Carmelita, her laugh and smile said it all. She lived a simple life, but it was never easy. Never one to ask for anything, instead she gave to anyone in need. Never one to complain, she thanked God for life and family. What more can one ask for. I wish we could all live life like Carmelita, always taking care of her family putting them first. Nanny will be missed by all.
- Thompson, Kimberly Anne
Halifax, NS October 13, 1982 - July 17, 2024 Kimberly Anne Thompson, age 41. In the late evening of July 17, 2024, surrounded by those whom she loved, Kim passed away peacefully after a multi-year battle with cancer. Never giving up the fight and the hope of recovery, Kim bravely faced her illness with courage, resolve and grace. Kim had an incredible zest for life which was evident every day through her positive and fun filled personality. Always willing to help others in need, Kim was the first to offer a hand, sympathetic shoulder to cry on, or a kind ear to a friend, colleague or even a stranger. Forever smiling and with an open heart, Kim was one of those people who had a genuine desire to make other's lives better. Her compassion was legendary, and her loyalty was unparalleled. Kim's love for her family and friends was only matched by her love of her dogs and helping out Ottawa Dog Rescue services. She was an avid foster mom, and ended up being a proud "foster fail" when she couldn't bear someone else housing her little shadow, Dottie. Jax, her senior Schnauzer is who really kicked off the desire to help as many dogs as she could. Kim is survived by her husband Chris MacDonald; her mother Kathleen and step-father Eric Slinn; father James Thompson and partner Barb Jones; brother Jeff Slinn and wife Megan; sister Amanda Thompson and husband Chris; In-laws Steve & Denise MacDonald and Beth & Eric Courchaine; and will be deeply missed by nieces Maeve and Rose, and nephew Rory, as well as by her Aunt Wendy Wagner, cousin Michelle Kavanaugh with her husband Jamie and sons Callen and Finn, and cousin Jeff Wagner with his wife Katherine and daughter Madison. Kim had a penchant for connecting with people of all ages and walks of life and was always very close to her grandparents, Constance and Wally Greasley (Deceased), Irene and James Thompson (Deceased) and Lotte and Ted Slinn. A celebration of life will take place in Ottawa at the Stonebridge Golf Course (68 Hawktree Ridge, Nepean) on Oct 17, 2024 from 4-7pm. Kim was always one to prefer a party over a funeral, so we will honour and celebrate her life in the way she always wanted. Stories and anecdotes about her life, and the impact she had on family and friends will be shared through drinks, music, photos, laughter and tears! A second celebration of life will follow in Halifax in the spring/summer 2025. In lieu of flowers, Kim would be touched, knowing that people donated to local dog rescues, Breast Cancer Research or a charity of their choice.

Marguerite’s greatest desire as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was to make sure everyone felt welcomed, loved, and experienced happiness within their lives. If there was anything she could do to enhance this, she was always willing to do so…whether it was serving biscuits and tea, co-piloting the car across the province to hockey games, taking carloads of kids on picnics and beach trips with a loaf of bread with peanut butter and Kool-Aid, or simply comforting us with her great hugs. She always ensured everyone felt welcomed in our home no matter what time they arrived or how long they stayed. Her greatest aspiration in life was to help her children to become "good" and committed family people. Marguerite felt it was very important to recognize people’s special days and never missed giving out her birthday, anniversary, and Christmas cards to all her children and all their children…and their children's children. We will always remember the annual Ryan Christmas Party she hosted for family and extended family. "I laughed so hard – Tears ran down my leg!" This quote sums up the essence of Marguerite! Whatever was going on, she wanted to be in the thick of it and the more fun and laughter that could be had the better! She often said, "If you don’t want me to come along…then don’t invite me!" She never missed an opportunity to travel and some of her most cherished trips may have been the ones taken with her daughters and sisters visiting around Nova Scotia and south to Florida. Marguerite dearly loved following her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to their many sporting and musical events near and far, as she was their biggest fan. We especially remember the "fake fur coat" that she wore to all the arenas when attending her kids' many hockey games while growing up. Marguerite and John enjoyed travelling to their home in Florida during the winter months where they had many good times "shuffling," shopping (while John was on the golf course), and playing cards with the great friends they spent time with while there. Marguerite was a long-term employee of the Royal Bank of Canada in Stellarton from where she retired 30+ years ago having made many cherished memories and life-long friends. In her early years she enjoyed curling and later, while living in Valley, she was a member of Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club, having participated in the 55+ Senior Games in Truro. She loved watching all sports on TV (especially the household favourite NHL team - Go Leafs Go) and all gameshows. A final message from her to her family and friends was " know that I just loved you all so very much. " We can’t thank the caregivers (including family members and folks from VON, Earth Angels, and the Community Palliative Care Team) enough who supported Marguerite during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
