  • MCKELVIE, Mark Donald

Halifax, NS March 22, 1965 - February 29, 2024 On February 29, 2024, God welcomed home Mark Donald McKelvie after a brief battle with cancer. Born on March 22, 1965 in Saint John NB, he was the son of the late Donald Gordon McKelvie and Marie McKelvie (Craig). Mark was a tradesman and proud union member, having worked in New Brunswick, Alberta, and Nova Scotia- the province he moved to in 2021 and the province he came to love so much. Mark was a great athlete. He played minor hockey, loved baseball and could run like the wind. He loved music, especially the Stones, Lynryrd Skynard, and most of all The Doors. Jim Morrison was his in his heart and on his arm. He played the guitar and wrote songs and poetry. His words were deep and honest coming from a life lived hard at times but always on his own terms. Mark loved the ocean and spent as much time there as he could digging clams and just sitting watching the waves. This love grew out of the time spent as a child in Chamcook,NB where his maternal grandfather was born and raised. Mark was a fierce advocate for the underdog and a loyal friend to those he loved. He was a proud Canadian and had strong opinions on politics. He was happy to share those opinions with anyone who had time to listen. Sometimes even if they didn’t have the time to listen because Mark loved to talk and share and tell stories. Mark loved his friends and family. He had a deep, abiding love for his mother Marie McKelvie and always found his way back to her. Though he didn’t have children of his own he loved his time with his nieces and nephews: Liam Cyr (Katie), Aidan Cyr(Hannah), Rylie and Hannah McKelvie. He was brother to William McKelvie and brother and protector of his “little sis” Dawn McKelvie Cyr (Marc). He had many Aunts, Uncles and cousins- related and adopted. Mark loved his clan. Mark was sadly predeceased by his father Donald McKelvie his hero and supporter. There will be music around a campfire in heaven. And Mark will be in his glory. There will be a celebration of Mark’s life in Saint John at a date sometime in the summer.

  • SHEFFIELD KEIZER, Minnie Florence

Centreville, NS August 31, 1923 - March 9, 2024 Minnie Florence (Keizer) Sheffield, age 100, of Centreville, Kings County, passed peacefully into the Heavenly Gates on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Valley Hospice, Kentville, with her loving family by her side. Born on August 31, 1923 in East Halls Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Leslie and Florence (Robar) Keizer and the last surviving member of her immediate family. Shortly after her birth, Minnie’s family moved to Centreville, Kings County, where she remained until her passing. Minnie faithfully attended the Centreville Baptist Church. She was a member of the Centreville 50 plus club and an honorary member and held many positions of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, Branch No.6, Kentville and volunteered regularly with catering, crib tournaments, flower delivery and the annual poppy drive, to name a few. Minnie was heavily involved with her community in Centreville, affectionately known as the "Old Crow", "Mayor of Centreville" or "Sherriff of Centreville". In 1949, Minnie joined the Centreville Good Neighbour Club and held virtually all executive positions, including President, Treasurer, Secretary and Ways and Means. As the schools in Centreville started to close, the Club took on the responsibility of the oldest and smallest school building as their meeting place, eventually evolving into the Centreville Hall Association. The Association purchased the larger schoolhouse in 1968, and the Centreville Community Hall was created. Minnie was also the President and Treasurer for the Centreville Hall Association, with some responsibilities including hall bookings, collecting funds, paying the bills, convening the meetings and helping facilitate maintenance. For many years, she organized the Fuel Supper, which provides money for fuel to heat the hall. Minnie was also the organizer for the annual charity drive that collected for CNIB, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, VON, Kidney Foundation and the Red Cross. She was also the writer of the Centreville news column in the Valley Advertiser for many years. Though Minnie was never one to boast or seek out recognition, she was nominated and won many awards throughout her life. She received the Palm Leaf Meritorious Service Award (1992), Royal Canadian Legion Coastal Communities Network Proud Community Award (2000), Legion Person of the Year Award (2003), Outstanding Volunteer Award (2009) and the Representative Volunteer of the Year Award (2009) presented by the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor, Maryann Francis and Premier Rodney MacDonald. Though her accolades are many, Minnie’s pride and joy was always her family. You could call her day or night and she would always be there. We were all blanketed in her unconditional love and never went a day without knowing how special we were to her. She enjoyed playing cards, especially 45’s and crib, and watching game shows. Minnie was a modern woman before her time and will be deeply missed. Minnie is survived by her sons, Eugene (Madeline), Centreville; and Garnet (Betty Rafuse), New Minas; daughters, Rhoda Bennett, Somerset; Tena (Rick) Power, Centreville; Joy Simpson, Centreville; and Carol (Daryl) Misner, Chipman Brook; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Sheffield (1981); brothers, Willis, Harry and Roy Keizer; sons-in-law, John Simpson and Wendell Bennett; and great-grandson, Damian Bennett. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks of appreciation to Tena and Rick for having Mum in their home for the last year, as well as to Dr. Nunn, wife Janice, and her homecare team for providing exceptional care, and Valley Hospice for blessing her with special care and music in her final days. • MATTHEWS DOREY, Susan Marie

Grand Anse, NS August 14, 1942 - March 8, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Wife, Sister and Aunt at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Friday, March 8th. Susan was the daughter of the late Mary Irene and John (Jack) Dougald Matthews of Grand Anse.  She grew up in a large family with 17 siblings. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Valma Dorey of MacIntyre Lake, son, Kenny Dorey (Cheryl), MacIntyre Lake, daughter, Bonnie Dorey, Grand Anse, son, Ben Dorey (Corene), Cleveland.  She is also survived by brothers, Carl, James and Alexander and sisters, Edna and Jean; grandchildren, Kristina (Elisha and her son Bryson), Devin (Madison), Dalton and her special little boy Breton.  Also left to mourn are her Godson: Bert Matthews; many nieces and nephews who she loved and cared for as her own; expanded family, Normand (Melanie and their daughter Ryleigh), Dorothy (sons Chase & Carson), Mitchell (Nikita and their daughters Quinn & Emmie) and Colin. She is pre-deceased by brothers, Charlie (in infancy), Wallace, Mattie, George, Johnny, Eddie, Tommy, Arthur and Hubert and sisters, Loretta (in infancy), Cassie & Florence. Susan’s love was her family: she loved it when the table was full.  You never left her house with an empty belly.  Her kindness had no bounds. Her door was open to anyone for a cup of tea, a hot meal and of course her amazing baking (she always made sure Benjie had dessert).  She welcomed many people into her house to live and ensured that it felt like their home.  Her caring and nurturing ways touched many including family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. She loved playing bingo and cards.  She was always up for a game of crib or auction and would keep playing as long as the cards were dealt. She looked forward to Sundays when her brother Sander and Rose would come faithfully for two years, with the gang for a big scoff and the card game that followed. She was the happiest when surrounded by her family, especially her three children and her grandchildren who were her pride and joy.  Kenny was her “rock” and ensured she never felt alone whether it was going on a road trip or visiting her in hospital when restrictions only allowed one visitor; Bonnie was her strength when hers began to fail and cared for her just like Ma cared for so many.  Bonnie learned her nurturing ways from Susan who cared for her own mother for many years; Benjie was her comic relief, “the most talented entertainer” and could always make her laugh and put a smile on her face.  Her love and pride for her children and grandchildren was unmeasurable.  Nothing brightened her day more than a visit from her grandchildren, who were so fortunate to have such a fun, caring and nurturing grandmother who played a pivotal role in their upbringing. Susan lived in MacIntyre Lake with her husband Valma until her health issues required more care, and she moved in with her daughter Bonnie in Grand Anse.  When her health issues became more serious, Susan moved to the Inverary Manor, which she loved and considered home.  Thank you so much to the staff at the Inverary Manor for welcoming our mom and taking such good care of her.  She loved all the staff and they helped to make her time there so enjoyable.  We would also like to thank the staff at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital for making Mom’s last few days comfortable and pain free. She always put others needs before her own and worried about everyone.  She would call to make sure we were all home safe, even in her darkest hours.  But that’s Ma!!  She was everyone’s Ma!  She will be greatly missed by so many.  Fly high with the angels Momma Bear! There will be no funeral service or visitation as per her request.  A private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

  • OOMEN, Peter

Kentville, NS November 2, 1942 - March 5th, 2024 Our much beloved gentle giant passed away on March 5th, 2024. Peter left us in his usual way with efficiency and dignity. His wife Cathy said her final goodbyes and his two sons, Cameron and Glen, held his hands as he passed. Peter was born November 2, 1942 in Voorschoten, Netherlands to Piet Oomen and Elizabet Merkies Oomen (Betsie). While Betsie was giving birth, the Siege of Stalingrad was taking place, and his mother was asked by the attending doctor to keep the noise down as he was listening to the reports on the radio. Since that day 81 years ago, Peter has been a quiet man with few words and much wisdom. In January of 1951 Peter travelled across the sea in his short pants to cold Montreal via Iceland and Goose Bay with his two older sisters Cornelia Elizabeth and Marina Metje to meet their freshly immigrated parents, looking forward to the promised snow piles that were "as high as houses". He continued to wear short pants all that first winter, despite the cold and playground scuffles they caused. After majoring in skiing and bridge at McGill University, he went on to become a very successful Electronics Engineer with many impressive accomplishments, such as: working at RCA on their Expo’67 "Man in Control" pavilion; designing the first word processors; designing flight information systems for British Overseas Airway Corporation and Telesat satellite ground stations; as well as designing the first automatic vehicle tolling system, used by EZ-Pass and Ontario’s highway 407. In 1968 Peter met and fell in love with Cathy Griffin, while skiing down a mountain in Vermont. They were married in 1970 and have, over the years, shared many laughs, two wonderful boys, a myriad of cats and dogs, and most recently the sweet, often fierce, Rocky, a 13lb chihuahua. While living in Georgetown, Ontario, Peter and Cathy welcomed almost a dozen young people to share their home over the years, several of whom still keep in touch. Peter and Cathy retired to Nova Scotia in 2000, living first in Blomidon and then in Wolfville. Peter enjoyed making new friends at Ken-Wo golf course, across the bridge table, in the bowling alley, and on the ski hills of Martock. Being Dutch and a cheese lover, he dabbled in cheese making with some notable successes and some very stinky failures. He also, with his buddy Phil, rode motorcycles up until his 80th year. He loved every kind of word game and crossword puzzle – especially the New York Times’. Peter was a supportive and understanding Opa to his granddaughters Marley and Griffin Oomen-White, and a caring father-in-law to Melanie Priesnitz and Serena Jennings.  He was a very tall, quiet, graceful man who set a wonderful example for his boys, fixed all the broken things for his wife Cathy and sister Marina. He was always a calming presence wherever he went. He leaves behind his wife Cathy, his sons Cameron and Glen, and two sisters, Marina and Corrie, who will all miss him terribly. We will celebrate his life in April. Donations in memory may be made to the SPCA or Hope for Wildlife.
