Truro, NS

July 12, 2025

Wayne Terrance Burley – 81, Truro, passed away peacefully, with his loving family at his side, on Saturday afternoon, July 12, 2025, following a period of ill health since October 2024.

Born in Toronto, he was a son of the late George and Theresa (Smith) Burley.

Wayne was a dedicated math teacher for 30+ years at Brookfield Junior High School until he retired in 1996. He took great pride in assisting in all activities at the school and over the years he coached every sports team the school had. Wayne advocated for his students to maximize their confidence both in the classroom and on the field. Over the years, he coached many sports, including basketball, football and track and field. Wayne passed on his love of sports to his children and grandchildren. Nothing made him happier than seeing their success on the courts and fields. Hearing stories about his grandchildren playing sports brought a smile to his face, even in his final days. He adored all of his grandchildren. Wayne loved snuggling with his infant grandson, George who died unexpectedly in April 2025 and we take comfort knowing they are together again.

Wayne's relationship with his father, George was deep rooted in their shared passion for business and harness racing. Partnering both at the family business, Burley's Furniture and harness racing with wins at tracks across North America.

Over the years Wayne enjoyed travelling, however he was happiest at home. He enjoyed many drives around the province with his caring wife, June. Wayne was involved with several community service organizations over the years. Later in his life, Wayne was known to frequent card games around town and loved joking with his friends at cards.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 47 years, June (Hancock); sons, Tim Burley (Karla Greek), Hammonds Plains; Kevin (Laura) Burley, Bible Hill; step-son, John Hancock (Kathleen Best), Truro; grandchildren, Cooper, Jocelyn, Brooklyn, Tristan, Joseph; brother, Gary (Barb) Burley, Calgary; sister, Marilyn (John) Gold, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, George.

Special thanks are extended to Dr. Suzana Mancusi, VON and Palliative Care Team (Dr. Cortney Smith and nurse Hanna) for providing the care needed to allow Wayne to remain at home during his illness.
