Wayne Frederic Groves passed away peacefully at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre on Sunday September 20th, 2026, with his wife, Sherry at his side.
Wayne was born on Nov. 14th, 1950, in the kitchen of a farmhouse in Onslow, NS to Ella and Fred Groves. In his early years, Wayne enjoyed a simple rural life with his parents and siblings. His survival skills started at a young age as he dodged the shenanigans of his older brothers. He lost his Mom at age 6 and this lead him on a path of moving away from Nova Scotia. He relied on extended family to help him navigate his early years. Thanks to this support, Wayne was the first of the Groves’ boys to graduate high school in Belleville, Ont.
After graduation, Wayne moved to British Columbia where he worked in the logging industry in Squamish and on Turnour Island and began his lifelong career in trucking. In B.C., he rode Harleys, owned an impressive collection of hot rods and became ingrained in West Coast bike culture. He was passionate about driving pretty much anything with wheels.
Although there were a few mishaps over the years it was said he could drive anything, except a lawn tractor.
It was in B.C. that Wayne met his wife, Sherry 39 years ago. It didn’t take long for them to make the move back home to Nova Scotia just down the road from where Wayne was born.
The couple laid down roots and raised their sons together in ‘Groves Valley’, next door to the Groves’ family homeplace.
Wayne was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan and always defended their Stanley Cup drought, a situation made more interesting when he married a diehard Habs fan. He continued to love fast cars and took many trips to local and international racetracks.
For Wayne, nothing was off the table when it came to having fun. Some of his most epic stories came from adventures he shared with family and friends. While he may not have seemed like a sensitive man, he was a devoted father and lit up whenever he talked about his sons and grandchildren. He spent many hours playing catch in the backyard with his boys and coaching their sports teams.
Wayne was a hard worker and could make or fix just about anything, and he always had a project on the go in his shop. He shared many happy hours there, passing on an impressive range of skills to his sons and grandson.
Wayne had a unique sense of humour, loved to tell a good story and always found some way to try to make light of a dark situation. Over the years, Wayne took every opportunity to turn an ordinary occasion into a legendary story.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Sherry; his sons John (Chelsea) and Tom (Kim); his grandchildren, Tyler, Emily and Claire; his siblings Lloyd (Marilyn), Art (Cheryl) and Sharon (Cyril) Osborne. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Edna McGurrin and several close nieces and nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, his father-in-law John McGurrin and his brothers Lee and Don.
