It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father, grandfather and great grandfather Malcolm Angus “Gussie” MacAskill. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital in Baddeck.

Born March 30,1943 in North River, Gussie was the son of the late Duncan John “DJ” and Christie “Belle” (MacDonald) MacAskill.

A true gentleman, Dad was full of kindness, fun and humor. Family always came first and our door was always open for those in need. Dad had many different jobs through the years including trucking, labourer, and construction, but he shone working at Hodgson’s Estate in Jersey Cove for 15+ years as a master gardener and groundskeeper. He had a love for the outdoors including fishing, hunting and gardening. Many fond memories were made over the years with life-long friends who became family. Dad was well known for his pie making, those who received a homemade lemon pie knew they had a special place in his heart.

Gussie is survived by his children Barbie (Brad) of North River, Shirley (Mike) of Fort McMurray, Mary (Angus) of Fox Creek, Gloria of Baddeck, Beverly (Darin) of North River, Stewart of Fox Creek and Jennifer (Bruce) of Fox Creek.

His great grandchildren, Addison, Aiden, Lyla, Isaiah, Greyson, Murray, Jason, and Alexander.

Gussie was predeceased by his wife Shirley Lee (MacDonald) MacAskill, daughter Peggy Lynn and her husband Shaun MacAskill, brother Eric and his wife Judy, brothers-in-law Dan Neil MacDonald and Bobby Leadbetter, and sister in-law Ruth Matheson.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Genge, Dr. Ritter, Paulette Levin, and all the wonderful staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital whose compassion, expertise, and unwavering dedication made all the difference in ensuring he was cared for with dignity and comfort during his final days.
