May 12, 1953 – May 14, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Linda Marie MacKinnon of Sydney, Nova Scotia, on May 14, 2026, at the age of 73.
Linda's passing comes only two weeks after the loss of her beloved husband of 51 years, Donald "Donnie" James MacKinnon, who passed away on April 29, 2026. Together, Linda and Donnie shared a love story that spanned more than five decades and became an example of loyalty, devotion, and enduring friendship to all who knew them.
Born in Glace Bay on May 12, 1953, Linda was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret MacNeil. She spent her childhood surrounded by the music, laughter, and strong community spirit that Cape Breton is known for. It was during a summer dance at a parish hall in New Waterford that she first met a young electrician named Donnie MacKinnon. What began as a simple conversation over a cup of tea turned into a lifelong partnership that would see them raise a family, build a home, and weather every challenge life placed before them.
For more than 45 years, Linda worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses throughout Cape Breton. She was known for her sharp mind, impeccable attention to detail, and quiet reliability. Business owners often joked that if Linda couldn't balance the books, nobody could. Yet beyond her professional accomplishments, it was her kindness, patience, and willingness to help others that people remembered most.
Linda was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She found joy in simple things: tending to her flower gardens, baking oatcakes and tea biscuits for family gatherings, listening to Celtic music, and spending long evenings on the veranda with Donnie as they watched the sun set over the harbour.
The sudden loss of her husband left a void that those closest to Linda could see weighed heavily upon her. While she carried herself with grace and dignity, her family and friends knew the depth of the heartbreak she experienced after losing the person who had stood beside her for more than half a century. In many ways, those who knew them best believed their lives had become inseparable. Though Linda continued to smile for those around her, it was evident that a part of her spirit had departed alongside the love of her life.
Together, Linda and Donnie leave behind a son, Michael MacKinnon, daughter-in-law Sarah, grandchildren Emma and Jack, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends across Cape Breton and beyond.
Their passing within such a short period has left an immeasurable loss for all who knew them. Family members take comfort in the belief that after a lifetime spent side by side, Linda and Donnie have now found one another again.
The family encourages anyone struggling with grief, loneliness, or mental health challenges to reach out to loved ones, community supports, or professional resources. No one should carry such burdens alone.
A Celebration of Life in honour of Linda Marie MacKinnon will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
Linda will be remembered for her gentle heart, unwavering devotion to family, and the quiet strength that defined her throughout her life.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever together.
