POIRIER, Michel Joseph Raymond Paul

Lantz, NS

January 31, 1944 - May 16, 2024

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce our beloved father Mike passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at his home in Lantz, Nova Scotia on May 16, 2024 at the age of 80.

Mike endured several health challenges during the last year and even in the face of adversity, he remained resilient, optimistic and formidably brave. He embodied kindness, compassion and had a very generous heart; leaving an unforgettable mark on the lives of everyone he touched.

Mike was born in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, the middle son of Rodrigue and Cécile Poirier. Exceptionally smart, he attended a private school and studied at Séminaire Sainte-Marie. After graduation, he pursued studies in Engineering at Laval University in Quebec City, but ultimately he listened to his heart (and his brother Mark's advice), and decided to follow his aspiration to become a Pilot, so he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. One little hitch, at one point, he realized what goes up, must come down, and landing a plane was a little harder than anticipated, so he became an admirable Navigator and rose to the highly regarded rank of Captain J. R. Poirier. In 1988 he retired and returned to school to study at Acadia University, receiving a degree in Computer Science. Mike went on to work for the Department of National Defence, Government of Canada, eventually leaving his days in his office for sunny days on the golf course, retiring in 2020.

When he was not practicing his golf swing, he found the simple things in life meaningful, be it watching tennis and hockey with his devoted partner Terri (Go Montreal Canadiens!), or adventures in travelling with people he loved. He had a keen interest in science, finding quantum physics, astrophysics and astronomy most fascinating. He had accrued a homemade wine collection and loved a good glass of Cabernet Sauvignon with a home cooked meal. Mike was an excellent hobby photographer, as memories were often captured during his cherished past time; morning walks on the Marsh Trail with his beloved dog "Pepper" He will be dearly missed and remembered as a loving father, step father, affectionate partner and loyal friend.

He is survived by his wife Michèle (Mimi); Poirier and his loving partner Theresa (Terri) Caillé, his two daughters, Nathalie and Marie-Ève of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, his brothers Mark (Lucie) of Quebec City and Joël (Monique) of Montreal, Quebec.

Our family is very appreciative and grateful to everyone who has expressed their support and provided comfort to us during this very difficult time. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care Team of East Hants, Nova Scotia, including the compassionate help of Laura, Georgina and Donna, as without this amazing family, we would not have been able to care for him at home.

A service will be held at the Dartmouth Funeral Home at 29 Queen St. on Monday, May 27 at 11:00a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Colchester County and Municipality of East Hants Palliative Care, or to a Charity of your choice.
