Smith, Shaun Colin

Antigonish, NS

September 17, 2024

It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Shaun Colin Smith, age 54, of Antigonish, who passed away on September 17, 2024, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Antigonish, Shaun was the son of Helen Hazel (Mason) and the late Colin Francis Smith.

Shaun was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University and wore his X-Ring with pride.  Shaun had a great memory and loved talking about politics, history, music, or any topic you could think of. He loved watching Jeopardy and could usually answer questions before the contestants could.

Shaun read voraciously, loved writers like Stephen King, and was a great storyteller himself.  Shaun loved Led Zeppelin and was a big sports fan; Shaun loved wrestling and was always ready to cheer for the Montreal Canadiens, the Red Sox, and the Patriots.

Shaun lived life with a positive attitude, kindness, a great sense of humour, and love. He had a deep love for his large family and many friends, and his greatest love was his Mom.

Besides his mother, Shaun is survived by his loving sister, Tracy (Rick Palmer); uncles, James (Tina) Mason; Ivan (late Mary) Mason; Roger Mason; Joseph (Anne) Mason; Gerard Mason (Elaine Rhynold); Terry (Bonnie) Smith; Donald (Marina) Smith; Bill (Linda) Smith; aunts, Joan Haverkort (Duncan MacLean); Millie (Paul) Dunbar; Theresa (RJ) Foley; Joyce (Pat) Foley; Cathy Mason (Dave Coyle); Isabel (late Lowell) Teasdale; Rita (late Danny) Kelly; Mary (late John) Boyle; his close friends, Mark and Anne Farrell (Makaylah, Jayden, his godson Riley and Hayley); and his many cousins who adored him.

Besides his father, Shaun is predeceased by his sister, Collette, in infancy, and his grandparents, Stanley and Hazel Mason and Bill and Julia Smith.

Cremation has taken place, and a funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11:00am in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, with Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding.  Burial to take place in the parish cemetery.

In Memoriam, donations to Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) appreciated.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steve Gallant for his many years of care. We are also indebted to Shaun’s dedicated care givers who shared their lives so graciously and became family: Amos, Ben, Binoy, Ebin, Jidhin, Kiran, Martin, Midhun, and Muhammed. We are also very grateful for the kindness and compassion the nurses, doctors, and staff at St. Martha’s showed Shaun on the final days of his journey.
