Laurie Byron Thomas, age 69, of Truro, passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Colchester East Hants Health Centre with his daughter by his side.

Laurie was born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia, the youngest of four brothers. Growing up in the small ocean side community of Beaver River, he left briefly to work in British Columbia. Laurie then returned to Beaver River to build a home and raise his family. He took great pride in being a father to his two daughters and later as a grandparent to his grandson. Laurie always went above and beyond as a parent, hosting kid’s birthday parties, shoveling off the lake for ice skating, making bonfires at the beach, taking us to sell Girl Guide cookies and anything he could do to ensure his daughters had wonderful childhoods and memories.

Laurie worked most of his life in Forestry. Forestry was something he was very knowledgeable and passionate about. He often reflected on his career in Forestry and how much he loved being outside in nature. He had a strong work ethic and took much pride and determination in any job he took on.

Later in life Laurie found another passion in the world of folk art. He was an amazing wood carver and folk artist. Laurie created whimsical creations that sold all over the world. He loved attending the annual Nova Scotia Folk art Festival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Laurie's art pieces brought joy to many. He was later involved in TNR society in Yarmouth, building many cat shelters to help the feral cat community. Laurie always had a love and respect for all animals, a trait he passed along to his daughters. He was a kind soul that would give the shirt off his back to help anyone (or animal) in need.

Laurie moved to Truro, in later years and worked many jobs, always making a good impression and friends everywhere he went.

Laurie was a kind, loving, hardworking person. He will be missed dearly, by many friends, family and loved ones. Honoring Laurie’s wishes, there will be no funeral; his ashes will be spread at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.

If so desired, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
