It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Donald Gordon Trenholm. Don passed away at the age of 77 on Monday, January 22, 2024 with his loving wife by his side.
Born in Amherst, NS, he was a son of the late Harold and Beryl (Minette) Trenholm.
Don was born, raised and retired in Amherst NS. He held a BSc. (Agr.) in Soil Science, as well as a major in Psychology. In his early years he was a contractor and an entrepreneur. He went on to work in a wide range of positions using his education. He worked with Fisheries and Oceans Canada as a Senior Habitat Biologist. He was Supervisor of the NL Soil and Plant Laboratory; Regional Chemist for Forestry Canada, NWPA/EA; Officer for the Canadian Coast Guard; and a Senior Habitat Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada before his retirement.
Other past professional interests included being member of the NL Farm Loan Board, Chair of the Land Development Advisory Authority (LDAA) Appeal Board, Regional Director and National Vice President of the Professional Institute of Public Servants of Canada.
During retirement he remained a very active member of his community. He was the current chair of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs Board of Directors. He was a chair for Trinity St. Stephen's United Church Council, a member of the NS Environmental Assessment Board, past member and past Treasurer of the CREDA Board, past Chair of the Camp Ta-Wa-Si Board of Directors, and was an active member of the RCAF Cumberland Wing.
In his spare time and particularly during retirement, he enjoyed gardening and rescuing animals.
Left with precious and fond memories are his loving wife: Ruth (Follett); daughter Suzanne (Robert) Spence; son Robert (Sheila) Trenholm; grandchildren Meghan (JD) Fines, Emily, Daniel, and Nicole; great-grandchildren: Scarlett, Sophie, Nevaeh, Zahra, Robbie; brother Lockey (Dixie, Debbie, Richard); sister Beverly (Jean, Lesley, Jamie) Tanguay; Aunt Marge Bennett (Donna, David, Don); brother in law Jeff (Emeline, Matthew, Jason) Follett; sister in law Janet (Michael, Heidi, Christa) Bates as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of extended family and friends in Amherst, NS, Corner Brook and St. John's NL.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Jason; mother in law Mary Follett; father in law Henry Follett; brothers in law Bob and Derek Follett, and Uncle Colin (Marge, Donna, David, Don) Bennett.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of the Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS. A public Time of Remembrance will be held in the months to come.
