- Doctor Preston (Isherwood), Alice Mary
Halifax, NS August 23, 1933 – August 09, 2024 Dr. A. Mary Preston passed away peacefully Friday August 9, 2024 at age 90 in the company of her husband of 69 years Charlie Preston at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mary was a physician and friend to many in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Uganda, Ontario and England. Born in Toronto in 1933 to Canon T W Isherwood and mother Muriel, faculty parents at Wycliffe College, she lived there until as a young girl she accompanied her parents on their return to England. During World War II she was evacuated from England to a farm in Wales to avoid Nazi bombing. Returning to Canada at the end of the war, she went to high school for one year in Toronto and completed her diploma at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. After pre-med at King’s College she became a medical student at Dalhousie University, one of only four female students in the medical class graduating with the MD degree in 1957. In 1955 she was married by her father, Canon Isherwood, who was rector of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Halifax to Charles (Charlie) F. Preston, PhD, who at that time was assisting with Anglican Ministry in Nova Scotia. She then interned in medicine in hospitals in Halifax and Sydney, NS and in Kingston, Ont., and spent one year (1957-58) in ophthalmology doing corneal transplant research. She and Charlie then went as medical missionaries to Uganda where he taught theological students and she worked as a general practitioner in community clinics and also taught science to senior high school students. She had her first child David in 1958, and following the family’s move to Uganda, she was blessed with her daughter Heather and sons, Alan and Kevin. Upon the family’s return to Canada in 1965 she acted as physician for Wilfred Laurier University, Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario and assisted part-time in a general practice. After three years, the family moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador where she accepted a post diagnosing respiratory diseases and then joined a group of GP's where she engaged in general practice and assistance in surgery. In 1995 Mary and Charlie moved to St. Stephen New Brunswick where she substituted, usually for a week at a time, for a number of doctors. This involved being the only doctor for a few years in the hospital on Grand Manan one week in four for the resident physician. Many women of the island were especially happy to have a female doctor and expressed that appreciation to Mary and Charlie. Upon retirement from medical practice, Mary remained active in the life of St. Stephen until she and Charlie fully retired to Halifax to be nearer to family. In retirement she remained active, travelling with family, singing in choirs and in the congregations of Christ Church in St. Stephen and St. Paul’s in Halifax. Much loved by her children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, she is survived by her loving husband Charlie, younger brother the Rev. Stanley Isherwood and children, David, Heather and Alan, and pre-deceased by son Kevin. A funeral service will be held on Thursday August 15, 2024 at 11:00am in St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1749 Argyle Street, Halifax, NS, reception to follow. She passed away tragically on July 23, 2024 in Sydney, NS. Shaylene was known especially for her love of family and will be greatly missed by her daughters Tanis, Makit, and Skyla, and her only son Trennan. There is a special place in her heart as well for her step daughter Daisy Trenholm. In her short time here, she was sure to enable their gifts of song, dance, music, archery, art, you name it. She taught her children well. From her they learned all these incredible gifts combined with respect and good manners. Shaylene was highly adventurous and meticulous at organizing things, especially as they related to family and culture. It could be a family trip to a Powwow, sporting event, youth and Elders’ gatherings, she was always on the forefront and had done a remarkable job with each endeavour. She won International Awards for her contributions to scholarly journal articles on ethnomusicology. She was, and remains, a cultural hero and role model. At a very young age, she learned the songs, the dances, the music, and ceremonies of her people. She happily shared these gifts when she worked at the Membertou Youth Centre for several years. She was a proud Mi’kmaq person who spoke the language well. We call her a gentle warrior. She was an elite archer who celebrated her greatest win by earning gold at the North American Indigenous Masters 3D Archery tournament in Toronto, 2018. She would be the first in line to defend the honor of her loved ones and friends. She wouldn’t hesitate to tell you that she loved and admired you. She shared her love unconditionally. Shaylene lovingly expressed a special place in her heart for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women awareness movement. She showed up to all the rallies and marches, drum in hand and singing beautifully for our stolen sisters. She had an incredible voice. She loved hiking, hunting, and fishing as well. An amazing cook, she loved to prepare wild game and fish – meals her family enjoyed immensely. She told great stories and had an unrivaled sense of humor. - Slocum, Joshua
Historical Obituary Mount Hanley, NS February 20, 1844 - November 14, 1909 Joshua Slocum, the pioneering mariner who became the first person to sail single-handedly around the world, has passed away. Born in Mount Hanley, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, on February 20, 1844, Slocum's adventurous spirit and seafaring legacy have left an indelible mark on maritime history. Joshua Slocum's early years were steeped in the maritime traditions of Nova Scotia. Born into a large family, he was the fifth of eleven children of John Slocomb and Sarah Jane Slocombe. His ancestry traced back to a Quaker forebear, "John the Exile," who migrated to Nova Scotia after opposing the American War for Independence. Raised on the North Mountain within sight of the Bay of Fundy, Joshua developed a love for the sea at an early age. At the age of eight, the Slocomb family moved to Brier Island in Digby County, where Joshua's maternal grandfather served as the lighthouse keeper. Despite his father's stern and disciplinary nature, Joshua's longing for the sea never wavered. By sixteen, after his mother's passing, he left home for good, embarking on a journey that would take him across the world's oceans. Slocum's seafaring career began in earnest in the 1860s. He sailed on merchant ships from Halifax to Dublin and then on to Liverpool, before venturing into the British merchant marine. His travels took him around Cape Horn, through the Dutch East Indies, and across the vast expanse of the Pacific. By the age of eighteen, he was a fully qualified Second Mate, rapidly rising through the ranks to become a Chief Mate and later a master of several vessels. In 1871, Slocum married Virginia Albertina Walker in Sydney, Australia. Over the next thirteen years, the couple had seven children, most of whom were born at sea. Virginia accompanied him on many voyages, enduring the perils of the sea with remarkable resilience. Tragically, Virginia passed away in 1884, leaving Slocum to continue his adventures with his children. One of Slocum's most notable voyages was aboard the sloop Spray, which he meticulously rebuilt in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. In 1895, at the age of fifty-one, he set sail from Boston on a solo circumnavigation of the globe, a feat that had never been accomplished before. His journey, chronicled in the acclaimed book Sailing Alone Around the World, captivated readers and became an international best-seller. Slocum's journey on the Spray took him across the Atlantic, through the Strait of Magellan, and into the vast Pacific Ocean. He navigated the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and crossed the Atlantic once more, completing his historic voyage in 1898. His remarkable achievement cemented his place in maritime lore and inspired countless sailors and adventurers. Joshua Slocum's later years were marked by continued exploration and writing. He embarked on several more voyages, always drawn to the call of the sea. However, in November 1909, while sailing aboard the Spray, Slocum disappeared, his fate shrouded in mystery. Joshua Slocum's legacy as a trailblazing seafarer and master mariner endures. His contributions to maritime literature and his pioneering spirit continue to inspire sailors and adventurers around the world. He is remembered not only for his extraordinary voyages but also for his unwavering determination, indomitable spirit, and the timeless lessons he imparted through his writings. Joshua Slocum is survived by his children and a world forever changed by his adventurous spirit. His memory will sail on, carried by the winds of history and the waves of the world's oceans.
