    Brooklyn, NS February 9, 2024 WOLFE – Elsie Marguerite, 98, of Brooklyn, Queens County passed away Friday, February 9, 2024 in Queens Manor, Liverpool, NS with family by her side. Born in Danesville, Lunenburg County, Elsie was a daughter of the late Robie and Letha (Whynot) Connolly. While living at home, Elsie enjoyed knitting, baking and cooking for family, get togethers with family included sons, daughters in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brothers; any family at all. Elsie loved camping with her husband, sons and friends in her younger years. As her boys grew older, they spent a lot of time with friends at the cabin hunting. Elsie worked in the meat department at the IGA in Liverpool for many years and met many people there. She was a church going person and enjoyed attending the Brooklyn Anglican Church teas and made many chilies for their potlucks. Elsie is finally at peace with the love of her life “Buster” and her son Kevin. Elsie is survived by her sons Heber Jr. (Denise Perrier) of Brighton Ont., James and Peter (Janet) both of Brooklyn, NS and Wayne (Heather) of Port Joli, NS; grandchildren Todd, Ashley, Jill, Dwight (Amy), Amy (Chad), Travis (Kayleigh), Kevin (Kaitlin); great grandchildren Brayden, Olivia, Zackary, Kennedy, Bradley, Sydney, Declan, Basil, Serenity, Summer, Sloan and K.J.; sister Betty Getson of Bridgewater, NS Besides her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her husband Heber “Buster”, infant daughter Susan, son Kevin, sisters Kathleen Sprague, Rosabelle Whitfield and Shirley Brown; brothers Lione, James, Donald and William. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. No flowers by request.     Milton, NS February 8, 2024 ZWICKER – Marjorie Irene, 80, of Milton, NS passed away in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Born in Liverpool, Marjorie was a daughter of the late Pat and Marie (Roy) Wolfe. Marjorie was an amazing cook and housekeeper for many years. She always enjoyed attending the music jams on Wednesday’s and Friday’s with all her friends and new friends she made along the way. She loved her garden and her four daily visiting crows; Mumma, Dad, Ernie and Jeff, who she fed every day. She was a great support to her children and grand children and enjoyed spending time with daily. The grandchildren and great grandchildren loved the chocolate and other treats she would save for their visits. Marjorie is survived by her daughter Gloria of Liverpool; sons Greg (Cathy), Rayburn (Christal Gilbert) both of Milton; grandchildren Jeffrey, Josh, Courtney and Hayley; great grandchildren William, Celeste, Chloe, Nora and Nate; sister Gloria (Gilbert) Frank of Bridgewater; brothers Richard (Lynn) of Greenfield, Raymond (Evie), Johnny (Joanne) both of Milton; nephews James, David and Gregory; nieces Kerri-Lynn, Sammy-Joe and Kerri Alesha; great nieces Layla and Shaylene. Besides her parents, Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Clairmont, sons Jeffrey and Ernie and her brother Larry.     Kentville, NS February 10, 2024 Catherine "Elaine" Wall – 76, of Kentville, passed away peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Saturday, February 10, 2024. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Lester McMullin and Catheline (McMullin) Phillips. Elaine is survived by her daughters, Charlene Gould, Sydney, Cape Breton; Shelley Gould (Donnie), Berwick; and Lisa Gould, Dartmouth; 10 sisters, Carol Campbell (Trevor), Kentville; Joyce Knox (Carl, deceased), Dartmouth; Patricia Brown (Eric), Canning; Donna Thompson (David), Wilmot; Sylvia Keddy (Arnold), Greenwich; Linda Isnor (Wayne), New Minas; Paulette Rockwell (Rufus, deceased), Kentville; Brenda Brisson (Gaetan), Calgary, AB; Pam Wagner (Alan), Kentville; and Lurenda Arenburg (David), Blue Mountain; brothers, Lawrence "Bubby" McMullin, Lakewood Road; Laurie McMullin (Linda), Ontario; Gary McMullin, New Minas; Michael McMullin (Nancy), Wallbrook Mountain; and Randy McMullin, New Minas; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren; as well as a large extended family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Steven Gould; and granddaughter, Michelle Johnson. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. The funeral service (with a video webcast) will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14th in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Donations in memory may be made to the Lung Association or Autism Nova Scotia.

  • ROSE, Grover Kelley

    Berwick, NS February 5, 2024 We are deeply saddened to announce Grover, 79, of Berwick, NS, passed away peacefully with family by his side in the Valley Regional Hospital on Monday, February 5, 2024. Grover was born in Halifax the son of the late James Kelley and Dorothy (Lent) Rose. Grover attended Dartmouth High School. He lived and worked the better part of his life in Dartmouth. He acquired an interest in jewels and precious gems having worked with Neima Brothers Jewelers in Dartmouth after completing high school. His keen interest and curiosity took him to the Gemological Institute of America in California in 1966 from which he graduated in 1967 as a Certified Gemologist, the first in Nova Scotia. On his return home, Grover made his leap into gemology with Leon Neima Jewelers in Halifax. He held several jobs in his field until he started his own business, The House of Jewels, which eventually evolved into G.K. Rose Appraisal Ltd. on Tacoma Drive in Dartmouth. His work took him to various parts of the globe. He enjoyed his business and immensely appreciated the social aspect of interacting with his many valued clients. Grover retired in 2011 due to ill health, at which time he moved to Berwick. Grover loved the outdoors. He loved to spend time hunting and fishing at Ray’s camp and in Barney’s River. Some of his fondest memories were wading waist deep in the Stillwaters at Mosher’s River with his father. Grover had a very closeknit group of lifelong friends with whom he relished salmon fishing, hunting, golf trips and just spending time together. Before his illness, Grover lunched regularly every Saturday with the boys where all the world’s problems were solved. Grover was blessed with a wonderful sense of humour and was always quick with a joke. He had a warm and welcoming smile for everyone he met and the ability to make each person feel they were the most important in the room. Grover will be sorely missed by his family, many friends and business acquaintances. Grover is survived by his wife, Patricia (Faulkner) Rose; his son, Scott, daughter-in-law Pamela; granddaughters, Sienna, Keira, and Sophie, of Dartmouth; and his stepson, Bill Lithgow of Ontario. Grover loved his family deeply and was very proud of his granddaughters. He was predeceased by his first wife, Charlene (Wirtanen) Rose and his lifelong friend Doug McCullum. Grover was treated with kindness, care and compassion during times of illness over the years and in particular during the last months of his life. We sincerely wish to thank VON Homecare and nursing, the Seniors’ LINCS teams, doctors, nurses and support staff in the ER and ICU of Valley Regional Hospital, especially Drs. M. Keough, Robin Bustin, and Judith Putz. Thank you for the kind words, prayers and emotional support offered by family, friends and acquaintances. A special thank you to Linda Dicks, his long-time assistant, who went above and beyond to assist Grover after his stroke in any way she possibly could. His Guardian Angel. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A celebration of life will take place in the spring, the date to be announced later.   • (WATTERS) MATTHEWS SINCLAIR, Helen

    Valley, NS Feb. 12, 1931 - Feb. 10, 2024 On Feb 10, 2024, Helen Mabel Matthews passed away peacefully with her family at her side. She was a resident of Valley View Villa and she was two days away from her 93rd birthday. Helen was born in Alma, NB on Feb 12, 1931, the only child of Charles and Mabel (Kelly) Sinclair. She moved to New Glasgow at a young age where she lived for many years with her husband, Herb "Hub" Watters, and her two children, Sylvia and Herb. After her husband’s death, she married Murdock Matthews. They lived mostly in the Sydney area and then moved to Halifax after they retired. They loved to travel and spent most of their retirement years wintering in Florida where they made many friends and enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine. Helen is survived by her 2 children, Sylvia (Bill) Fraser, Herb (Judy) Watters, and Murdock’s children, Sheldon (Wanda) Matthews, Sheila (Ed) Kita, Sherri Matthews (Kevin) Chapman, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She will be dearly missed by many. Even though Mom faced increasing challenges due to vascular dementia, she never lost her sense of humour or her fighting spirit. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.

  • SOGZ, Sister Dolores

    Antigonish, NS August 15, 1953 - February 10, 2024 Sogz, Sister Mary Dolores, 90, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Mary’s Court, Parkland, Antigonish, on Saturday February 10, 2024, in the 71st year of her Religious Life. Born in Odessa, Saskatchewan, Sister Mary Dolores was the daughter of Joseph H. and Barbara (Unser) Sogz. (Stepmother Joanna Sogz). Sister Mary Dolores entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1951. She pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1953, and her perpetual vows on August 15, 1956.  She obtained a BSc in Home Economics in 1956, and further training as a dietitian. Sr. Dolores served in several of the Congregation’s hospitals; St. Joseph’s, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia; St. Rita’s, Sydney, Nova Scotia; St. Peter’s, Melville, Saskatchewan; St. Michael’s, Lethbridge, Alberta. She was ever the Home Economist, always finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Anyone who was on the receiving end of a greeting card from Sr. Dolores was a beneficiary of her creativity. Following retirement from this work, Sr. Dolores moved into Pastoral Care, working at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish for a time, and while living in Inverness was fully engaged in the ministry of presence. She served the Congregation in several capacities when she moved to Bethany, and following the move to Parkland, Antigonish, continued to live a life dedicated to Gospel Hospitality to anyone and everyone she encountered, always ready with a story and a smile. Sister Mary Dolores was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Rose Ziegler, and Cathy Callfas (Stepmother Joanna Sogz and Stepbrother Wilfred Huber).  She leaves her devoted niece and her husband and several other nieces and nephews. The remains will be resting at Martha Place, Parkland Antigonish, Thursday February 15, 9:00 a.m., a Celebration of Vigil will be held at 11:00am in St. Martha Chapel, Parkland Antigonish.  A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on the same day, 1:45 p.m. in St. Martha Chapel.

  • VICKERS, Devlin Alexander

    Millville, NS October 12, 1938 - February 10, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Devlin Alexander Vickers, age 85, on Saturday February 10, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines on October 12, 1938, Devlin was the son of the late William and Sarah (Bonnar) Vickers. He was employed as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic, North Sydney, until his retirement. Devlin was a devout member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or. Devlin is survived by his wife, Joan (MacKenzie) Vickers, daughter, Patricia Kirkwood, Oakville, Ontario; sons, Darren (Janet) Vickers, Millville, and Scott (Joanne) Vickers, North Sydney.  Also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorraine Finlayson and Ann Ferguson. Besides his parents, Devlin was predeceased by brothers, Edgar, Russell, two infant brothers, Ferdinand and Augustus, sisters, Catherine, Jessie, Loretta, Mae, Willena, Vivian, Jean, and son-in-law, Graham Kirkwood. Visitation for Devlin will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13th in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 15th, at 10:30 am, at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.  Cremation to follow with burial at a later date in the Black Rock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, SPCA, or a charity of your choice.

  • RICHARDSON, Charles Gilbert

    Brooklyn, NS Feb 9, 2024 Richardson – Charles Gilbert, 97, of Brooklyn Queens Co passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb 9, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, Charles was the son of the late Hallam and Evie (Gardner) Richardson. Charles attended schools in both Brooklyn and Liverpool. In school, he pitched for their baseball team and played on their hockey team. He was president of the former Brooklyn Athletic Association which raised money to develop the softball field, and to support the softball team of which he was a member. He was a member of the Brooklyn broom ball team in the 1950s which played in the Bridgewater league. Charles worked for the Markland Shipping Co for a few years before going into the painting business with his father. He was president of the Liverpool Co-op in Brooklyn, also serving on the board of the Canadian Bible Society for a three year term. He was a member of the Brooklyn Baptist Church, serving for many years as a deacon, the Sunday School superintendent, and in various other committees. In the 1970s, he became involved with the Long Lake Baptist Youth Camp, as a director on the camp board, then as the chairman for over 20 years, earning the nickname Mr. Long Lake that has stuck through the years. He was involved in different projects of growth for the camp, giving of his time in many ways. In 1962, he went to work with the Mersey Paper Company, retiring as the paint shop foreman in 1987.  In 1992, as part of the Canadian Baptist Volunteer Program, he went to Gilliam Manitoba to help paint the inside of a church and to share in their ministry, and in 1995, he joined a tour of the Holy Land. He enjoyed playing canasta with his wife and their friends. He taught his grand daughter, Kristen, at a young age how to play the game, and to this day, she still has his competitive nature and loves to play. Charles was known as a bit of pool shark, very serious about weekly pool time with his buddies. Having lived in Brooklyn all his life, he often had phone calls, letters, or visits from people wanting to know various things about the history of the community. Right up to the end of his life, he could answer those questions, usually without any pause to think about it. In his later years he continued to enjoy the great outdoors, his woodlot, gardening, blueberrying, and his annual trips to the shores of Lake Rossignol with friends to pick cranberries. Left to mourn are his daughter Catherine, his son-in-law, Robert (O’Brien) and his granddaughter, Kristen. Charles is also survived by two other granddaughters, Jericka and Katelyn, his nieces, Barbara, Susan and Nancy and several cousins, two of which visited him this past summer, Janet and her husband, Rob, and John and his wife, Eugenia. Visits that Charles thoroughly enjoyed. Besides his parents, Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years Elizabeth (McLean), his twin sister Elizabeth, and his sons, Philip and Robbie. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Liverpool United Baptist Church, Liverpool. Reception following in the Brooklyn Baptist Church Vestry. A private burial will be held at a later date. No flowers by request. Donations can be made to the Brooklyn Baptist Church, Long Lake Camp, or the Queens Co VON.

  • GILLIS, Calum Reginald

    Antigonish, NS February 8, 2024 The Gillis family regrets to announce the passing of our brother, Calum, on February 8, 2024, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Calum was truly one of a kind.  Despite years of debilitating health issues, he remained positive and put everyone else’s needs first and was always willing to lend a hand.  He carried the burden of his many health challenges bravely.  He loved people and had many lifelong friends. He loved his family, his siblings, and he especially loved his nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.  Each one had a special and unique relationship with him.  He was always there for every occasion. Calum was a skilled carpenter, starting with "Lenargo" just out of high school.  His attention to detail was impeccable, and he took great pride in his work.  When he was no longer able to do carpentry, he started his own business:  "Wheels on Wheels", a wheelchair accessible van, where he again went above and beyond.  Regardless of the weather, his dedication to his clients was unparalleled. His interests and hobbies were many.  He was a Bingo Bag (before bingo was cool), and he played many a card game with his chosen mother, Hope MacDonald.  Calum enjoyed playing darts for years at the Antigonish Legion. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan.  He never missed a game and would brag when he could, but he could also take a teasing – to the point of having to wear a Habs jersey after losing a bet! Born a "gear head", he loved vintage cars and trucks, and he could always be seen driving his 1985 Chev truck, in which he took immense pride.  He was a proud member of the Antigonish Car Club. He is survived by his brothers, John Hugh (Lorelle), MacMaster Road; and Tom (Tracey), Antigonish; sisters, Mary (Andy) MacDonald, Black Avon; Katy (Frank) Pavelski, Massachusetts; Sarah Gillis (Joe MacLean), Ohio; Margaret (Stephen) MacKenzie, Antigonish; and Lois Gillis (Tim Liengme), Antigonish; 18 nieces and nephews and 22 grandnieces and grandnephews; goddaughter, Cora MacPherson; aunts, Jessie and Betty, both of Detroit; and Teresa, Judique; and uncle, Roy Jackson, Trenton, ON. Predeceased by his parents, Hugh Duncan and Anne (MacDonell) Gillis; brothers, Billy and Joey, and numerous aunts and uncles. It was his honour and privilege to make special road trips and smaller excursions with his aunt and uncle, Sr. Margaret and Fr. Malcolm MacDonell. Thank you to Margaret and Stephen, who welcomed Calum into their home, which enabled him to live independently for the last three and a half years.  We would like to thank the staff in GARU/MedSurg and Palliative Care at St. Martha’s Hospital for their exemplary care. Special thanks to Elizabeth Morgan, RN, Dr. Emily Rice, Dr. Simms, and to Dr. John Hickey for his many years of care.  Also, thank you to Continuing Care, VON, Red Cross, and his dedicated caregivers. Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.  Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11:30am in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Josephs, with Fr. Danny MacLennan and Fr.   • CAMPBELL, Catherine (Cathy)

    Port Hawkesbury, NS December 27, 1926 - February 3, 2024 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Catherine "Cathy" Campbell on February 3, 2024 at the Beth Israel Hospital in Brookline, MA. She was 97 years old. Predeceased by her parents James Campbell and Annie Laurie (Gillis) of Harbour View, N.S. Her brothers. Jack (Louise) Campbell, Ancaster, ON and Erwin Campbell, Brookline. Survived by her sisters Marion (and the late Duncan T) MacDonald, Harbour View, Rose (and the late Alexander) MacDonald, Niagara Falls; her brothers, Daniel Campbell and James Campbell of Brookline; and Omer (Maud) Campbell of Harbour View.  Also by her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives and friends. Cathy left Cape Breton by train for New York City in 1946.  A few years later she moved to Brookline where she worked as a hairdresser until her retirement.  She was the matriarch of a close and loving family.  Cathy spent a lifetime filled with selfless dedication to her parents, brothers and sisters.  She looked forward to and loved visiting her home in Cape Breton each summer.  In Brookline, her door was always open to her nieces, nephews and all their friends.  Her extreme generosity and hospitality extended to them will never be forgotten. Cathy's cheerful, warm and wonderful presence will remain cherished in our memories forever. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 2 -4pm at the Port Hood and Area Resting Place.  Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 11am at St. Peter's Parish, Port Hood.   • MORTON, Mary

    Dartmouth, NS December 24, 1925 - February 9, 2024 Mary Morton, 98, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia passed away on Feb. 9, 2024. Mary was born on Christmas Eve in 1925 in the outport fishing village Cape La Hune, Newfoundland. She learned Morse code and began working in the community’s telegraph office while still in school, and left home to immigrate to Nova Scotia during World War II. Mary worked for many years with Nova Scotia Light and Power. She was a prolific knitter, and enjoyed caring for her cats (as well as the occasional squirrel or racoon). She loved dancing and skating with her husband Gerald and spending time with their friends at the Findlay Community Centre. She was a devoted grandmother, deep-frying endless batches of french fries for whoever would show up for lunch. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; son George; parents, Arthur and Blanche Bagg (Pink); and siblings, Gladys, Effie, Suzie, Max, Nathan, and Findlay. Mary is survived by her daughter Geraldine (Philip); grandchildren Nathan (Katrina) and Spencer (Amanda); great-grandchildren Calliope, Isaac, and Levi; and many nieces and nephews, including Sarah and Millie. Many gracious thanks to the caring staff at Oakwood Terrace and the Dartmouth General Hospital. In lieu of a funeral service, please celebrate Mary’s life however you wish: with a donation to a local animal shelter, planting a tree or some milkweed seeds, or with a simple act of kindness.

    Valley, NS February 4, 2024 Teresa Carmel D'Arcy – 90, Valley, Colchester County, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Dublin, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late William and Annie (Leahy) Deering. Teresa absolutely loved shopping and getting a great deal; all you had to do was mention the word "SALE" and she would want to be there as soon as she could be! She was the matriarch of our family and loved her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter dearly. Teresa is survived by her children, Brendan D’Arcy, Valley; Derek (Dawn) D’Arcy, Valley; Michele (Steve) Pejkovic, Sherwood Park, Alberta; Michael (Carole) D’Arcy, Costa Rica; grandchildren, Sean, Sara (Ben), Tyler, Craig, Katlin, Emilee; great granddaughter, Rowynn; sister, May Byrne, Toronto. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Michael Joseph; siblings, Isaac Deering, Jimmy (Alice) Deering, Judy (Paddy) Forde, Christine Deering; brother-in-law, Paddy Byrne. Honouring Teresa’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service and she will be taken back to her beloved Ireland. If so desired, donations in Teresa’s memory to The Salvation Army (Truro Corps) are welcomed.
