    Murray Siding, NS February 8, 2024 Garry Merle Faulkner – 79, Murray Siding, Colchester County, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Merle and Gladys "Peggy" (McNutt) Faulkner. Garry worked for many years in body shops in the Truro area. In the mid-1970s, he opened his own body shop in Murray Siding. He also utilized the pond on his property to raise Arctic Char, a project that he truly enjoyed. He liked to keep his property maintained and enjoyed finding alternative ways to fix things; he also liked to help others. Garry is survived by his sons, Jamie, Bible Hill; Joe (Mary), Edmonton, Alberta; grandchildren, Sam and Lily, Edmonton; siblings, Wayne Faulkner (Brenda), Truro; Marlene (Stephen) Creelman, Truro; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Anne; brother, George; sister-in-law, Patsy. Family and friends are invited to attend a gathering in Garry’s honour that will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, February 11, 2024, at 629 Salmon River Road, Murray Siding.   • LONG, James Edward

    New Minas, NS February 7, 2024 James Edward Long, age 59, of New Minas, died on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the QEII-Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, with Holly by his side. Born in Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late Shirley Stultz and George Long. James worked for 32 years at Carpet One in Kentville as a flooring installer. The Cleveland’s were like family to him. Special thanks to them for their care. James was an avid fisherman who spent time doing Bass Tournaments. He looked forward to hunting in the fall at the camp with his longtime best friend, Ron Hatt, who was like a brother to him. James enjoyed woodworking, making everything from cutting boards to furniture, and renovating the house. He was a former volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross and Valley Search and Rescue. James was kind, generous and would go above and beyond to help anyone, he will be missed by many family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Shirley and George. James is survived by his loving partner, Holly Silver; stepson, Logan Silver (Erika Frost); sisters-in-law, Deborah Elliott and Jo-Anne Pruyn; brother-in-law, Billy Pruyn; and half-brother, Harold Conway. Special thanks to the team of doctors and nurses at the QEII for their kindness and care. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A Celebration of James’ life will be held from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 17th in James and Holly’s home, 15 Country Walk, New Minas (Meadowview Terrace Subdivision). Friends and family are welcome. To honor James, please do an act of kindness for someone in need.

  • STEVENS, Gretol-Ann Margaret

    River Hebert, NS February 8, 2024 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Gretol-Ann Margaret Stevens, age 83, of River Hebert.  Gretol passed away peacefully at the White Birches Retirement Residence, Amherst, on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Born in River Hebert, she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Myrtle (Nelson) Grant. Gretol was a member of the Mayflower Rebekah Lodge, Joggins, the River Hebert Legion Auxiliary and the Friday Night Dart Club.  In earlier years, Gretol loved traveling on the train with her grandchildren to Ontario.  She was adored by her grandchildren who called her "Candy Nanny".  She enjoyed driving, and would taxi anyone around that needed a lift. She will be sadly missed by her sons, Jamie (Twila), Fenwick, Laurie (Tammy), Fort Lawrence; daughters Bonnie (David) Rector, Amherst, Sheila Proctor, Oxford, Susan Amell, Oshawa, ON; 9 grandchildren, Jamie, Lynn, Kendra, Rodney, Blair, Kelsey, Dakota, Cole and Brayden; great grandchildren, Trinity, Masen, Hanna, Jaxon, Alaia, and Juliette;  sisters Glenda Peverill, Amherst, Elizabeth Budden, Amherst, Shirley (Bob) Mack, Lr. Sackville; sister in law Elsie Grant, Calgary, AB; as well as her new family from White Birches. She was predeceased by a daughter Darlene Dawn; life partner George Van Snick; brothers Eric, and Fred. Arrangements are in care of Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm.  Her funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 2 pm, Life Celebrant Scott Balser officiating.  Burial will be held beside her daughter in the Hillside Cemetery, River Hebert in the spring. For those who wish to do so, donations in memory of Gretol may be made to the Hillside Cemetery, River Hebert.

  • REEVES, Patricia Mary

    Middleton, NS November 17, 1946 - February 7, 2024 REEVES (Canavan), Patricia Mary ~ Age 77, of Prospect, Kings Co., passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Leon. She was a proud Momma to Tracey (Robert Rogers), Kelley (Rick Hiltz), Marcus (Jen Walker), and Jodey (Ryan Cocker). Pat was fortunate to be Grandma to Abigail, Ashley, Roderick, Jazz, Felicity, William, Ethan and Vivienne. She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Clara Canavan; and in-laws, George and Florence Reeves. She is survived by her siblings, Gordon (Ginnie), Dean (Larry Swindell), Peter, Cathy (George McGrath), and Kevin (Nancy); and many nieces and nephews. Pat’s family was very important to her. She spent many hours as a chauffeur heading to piano lessons, Sunday School, Guide and Scout meetings and many softball games. In later years she was rarely seen without Leon; going for drives, visiting friends, eating out or just sitting on the couch watching the Jays game. Pat began her teaching career in Liverpool, but after a year she returned to the Valley to teach her first of 34 years at Central Kings Rural High School. She taught both French and Keyboarding to the many students who were lucky enough to pass through her doors. A fter her retirement she continued to work as a substitute teacher to keep busy and as an excuse to visit her CK friends who were still in the trenches. Pat was an active community member volunteering with the Prospect Community Club, which included organizing weekly card parties. She was also an active member of Cambridge United Baptist Church and long-standing secretary of Northville Farm Heritage Centre. Visitation will take place on Monday, February 12, from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m., with funeral service at 2:00 p.m., both in Cambridge United Baptist Church, 5981 Highway 1, Cambridge. Reverend Joe Gosbee officiating, with a reception to follow.  Interment will be in Berwick Cemetery, at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in memory can be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.

  • DEMINGS GRIMM, Joan Marie

    New Minas, NS February 6, 2024 Joan Marie (Grimm) Demings – age 91, of New Minas, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Aylesford, she was a daughter of the late MacKenzie and Ethel (Bond) Grimm. Joan will be remembered for her quick wit, love of animals, especially her dogs, and her dedication to her pride and joy, her children. She was a devoted mother, participating in all of her kids’ activities, including tobogganing, skating, swimming, biking and playing ball when they were young, and supporting them throughout their lives with any help that she could offer. Joan was an exceptional seamstress, making many of her children’s clothing, as well as knitting sweaters, scarfs and mittens for many family and friends. She enjoyed crafts, especially rug hooking, crocheting and knitting. In her younger years, Joan worked at Simpsons-Sears, and made life-long friends that she kept regular contact with. Joan was artistic and enjoyed writing poetry and playing guitar. She loved music, especially the old country classics. Joan was a meticulous homemaker and made the best apple pie. Joan also enjoyed gardening and being in nature, watching the birds and feeding the wildlife. Joan is survived by daughters, Tina DeWitt (Timothy Campbell), Lower Sackville; Tammy Demings (Joe Bishop), Aylesford Lake; son, MacKenzie Demings and his wife, Annette, Avonport; sisters, Patricia McBay, Berwick; and Joyce Vaughan, Hantsport; half-sister, Kay Bailey, Naples, FL; grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Shawna and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Alex, Jayde, Rylie, Owen, Hayden and Londyn; many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Alton Demings (2022); sister, Frances Barkhouse and half-sister, Freda Boudas. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Joan’s caregivers, Leona and Theresa for the exceptional care, compassion and love that they provided. You are truly our angels. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. A graveside service and celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date.     Glace Bay, NS November 21, 1957 - February 1, 2024 We, the family regret to announce the passing of Pamela Elizabeth Fahey, on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on November 21, 1957, Pam was a daughter of the late Calixte and Margaret (Varcalli) LeBlanc. Pam is survived by her son, Jason McKay; twin sister, Pauline MacNeil; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; special aunt, Heather; special friend, George; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family, too many to mention. Besides her parents, Pam was predeceased by her brother, Bernie. The family would like to like to thank the nurses, doctors, and the wonderful staff of Taigh Na Mara who cared for Pam in her time of need. We are truly grateful. Pam was truly blessed to have you all in her life. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Pamela Fahey will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, February 12, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.     Waterville, NS February 1, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Daniel Franklyn Vidito, 57, of Waterville, on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in the Halifax Infirmary - QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Pauline (Wotton) Phillips and Arthur Vidito. He is survived by his wife, Karen; brother, Edward, Middleton; sister, Sherry Murphy, Windermere; and extended family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Charles Philips; sister, Charlotte Schofield. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024 in New Hope Wesleyan Church, Kentville, where the funeral service will also be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16.   • DECOSTE, William Francis (Bill)

    Monastery, NS February 7, 2024 DeCoste, William Francis "Bill", age 82, of Monastery, Antigonish County, passed away on February 7, 2024, at home. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late James and Ellen (Mattie) DeCoste. Bill worked for a frozen food company when he lived in Toronto and for the Department of Highways when he moved back home.  He enjoyed bluegrass music, going to the concerts in PEI for over 40 years, and hosting parties at his camp.  Bill had a devilishness to him.  He was always joking with people, and he especially loved teasing his siblings. He loved watching the Habs and watching the Leafs lose.  An animal lover, especially his cats, he would feed the birds and squirrels right out of his hand.  He was a very good neighbour, and he felt the same about the neighbours he had.  Most of all, though, he loved and was devoted to his dear wife, Alva. He is survived by his siblings, Kaye (late Percy) Gallant, Antigonish; John (late Judy), St. Andrews; Frankie (Shirley), Tracadie; Marjorie (Marcel) Valade, Eagle River, ON; Mary (late Jimmy) Mattie, Heatherton; Hellie (late Jerry) LeBlanc, Monastery; Eddie (Sharon), Halifax; Bernie (Sharon), Etobicoke, ON; Eileen (Gary) Moore, Monastery; Ernie (Shirley), Linwood; Everett (Joanne), Thorburn; Ellsworth (Yvonne), Tracadie; Kevin (Frances), Lakevale; brothers-in-law, Tommy and Peter Bowman; sister-in-law, Donna Delorey; and many godchildren, nieces, and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Alva, and siblings, Lawrence, Jimily, Theresa, Emmie, Angela, and John, Margaret Amanda, and Margaret Cecilia in infancy.   • EVANS, Joyce Evabella

    Middle Sackville, NS February 3, 2024 It is with profound sadness today we announce the passing of my wife Joyce Evabella Evans 67 of Middle Sackville on February 3 2024. at the Halifax Infirmary, after her long battle with congenital heart failure while surrounded by family. Joyce was born in Sheet Harbour and predeceased by her brother John Tibert, parents John and Ida (Mullins) Tibert. Survived by her loving Husband Donald Evans, Her two children Tracey Duffy and John Duffy. Joyce is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Samantha Boyce, Tara Duffy, Lilly Duffy, Ella Duffy, Evan Duffy and 3 great grandchildren along with her fur babies. Sisters Barbara (Lloyd) Pace, Pauline (Gary) Darr, Dorothy Tibert, Audrey (Archie) Campbell. Joyce was a very loving woman with a very big heart for her fur babies, and family.  She always liked to talk about her dreams if she and her husband won the millions and what they would do with it. Joyce was also very compassionate and understanding of everyone around her, she was easy to talk to as she never judged you. Joyce enjoyed hearing about other people's days and how they were doing. Joyce loved seeing her husband come home from work, as she also loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially around the holidays to see their faces when opening gifts. She loved collecting salt and pepper shakers of all different types. She also enjoyed seeing the photos family would bring her. She enjoyed seeing all the kids dressed up on Halloween while trick or treating and giving them candy. It greatly saddens our hearts with her passing, we also want to thank everyone for their condolences. We also want to thank the staff at QE2 for their compassion and care during her time there. There will be no visitation or service for the passing of Joyce.

  • SKELTON, Richard Joseph (Dick)

    Dartmouth, NS February 2, 1942 - February 7, 2024 We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our dear, departed husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Dick Skelton, who passed away peacefully on February 7th at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Nursing home in Halifax.  He had resided there for the last 8 months with a truly remarkable group of caregivers. Dick was born on February 2, 1942 in Timmins, Ontario.  The eldest son of Mathew Skelton and Lillian (Edmison) Skelton. Dick was predeceased by his parents, and sister, Kathleen Jean MacNicol (Jack).  He is survived by his brother, John Douglas Skelton (Karen) of Calgary. Dick also is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlene (Nicki) Skelton of Dartmouth, his son, John C. Skelton (Cheryl) also of Dartmouth, and Shelley Skelton (Scott) of Calgary, and Grandchildren Nadia C. Skelton and Vanya C. Skelton, and great-grandson Remi Skelton, all of Dartmouth.   And in addition, many nieces and nephews. Dick started his aviation maintenance career with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Canadian Navy, and continued working for various helicopter and aviation companies in civilian life.  In his younger years, Dick was active as a recreational pilot, scuba diver, and curler.   Following retirement from Atlantic Turbine in PEI, Dick and his wife Nicki became active Snowbirds in Avon Park, Florida while enjoying the RV life. Upon resettlement back to Dartmouth, Dick’s greatest loves were his family and friends.  An avid reader and player of cards, he celebrated his first “29” in cribbage at the ripe old age of 80, much to his son’s astonishment. There will be no visitation, upon request.  There is a funeral Mass to be held Tuesday February 13th at 1:30 PM at St Clement Church on Gaston Road, Dartmouth.  A reception following the Mass will be held downstairs in the church hall. Memorial donations, in Dick’s memory, may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Clement Church, any charity of your choice, or any nursing home of your choice.

  • MACLEAN, Mary Elizabeth

    North Grant, NS February 7, 2024 MacLean, Mary Elizabeth, age 91, of North Grant, Antigonish County, passed away on February 7, 2024, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Monastery, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Charlote "Lottie" (Williams) Johnson. Mary worked in Detroit for over 30 years as both an accountant and a service station attendant.  She also worked as a hairdresser, and upon returning to Nova Scotia, she continued hairdressing in her home.  Mary knitted many prayer shawls for the hospital, and she was a member of the Antigonish Garden Club.  Mary was an elder of St. James United Church and was very dedicated to her church.  She cooked for their Hot Meal Program and was a member of the United Church Women. She is survived by her children, Myles (Della), Sydney; Blair (Florence), Antigonish; Heather Cromwell, New Glasgow; and Solomon, Antigonish; son-in-law, Kenneth Pelley; grandchildren, Jason, Vernon, Craig, Rob E., Candice, Christopher, Kourtney, Cory, and Natasha; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; twin sister, Laura Reddick; sisters, Beverly Pelley and Verna (Jerome) Pelley; and her fur-babies, Lacey and Ginger. Predeceased by her husband, Donald; daughter, Sandra; brother, George Johnson; sister-in-law, Yoland; brothers-in-law, William "Bill" Reddick and Floyd Pelley; and nephew, Martin Reddick. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 11th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.  Funeral will be held Monday, February 12th at 3pm in St. James United Church, Reverend Peter Smith presiding.  Burial in St. James and St. Paul Cemetery in the spring. In Memoriam, donations to St. James United Church, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care Unit), or Cathy’s Place appreciated. A special thank you to niece and caregiver Deborah Reddick, the VON and the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit for the care they provided for Mary.

  • BONNELL, Melvin Lewis

    North Sydney, NS August 20, 1947 - February 3, 2024 he family of Melvin Lewis Bonnell would like to announce his passing on February 3, 2024 in Abbotsford, British Columbia. He was 76 years of age. Mel is survived by his wife, Ann, and his children, Heather, Mark, and their respective families. The fourth son of the late Lewis and Beatrice Bonnell of Leitches Creek, Mel is also survived by brothers - Claude, Derek, Art, Ray, Lewis, and sister Millie. Besides his parents, Mel was predeceased by his brother Howard, his first wife, Judy, and grandson Harrison. The Leitches Creek Road was Mel’s home for more than 65 years and is a place of many memories for the Bonnell family. After his marriage to Ann he moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia where he enjoyed being closer to his children, milder climate and many new friends. Although living away for 8 years, Mel remained a very proud Cape Bretoner. Mel spent over 40 years working as a Lineman for Nova Scotia Power in North Sydney and Sydney. He loved his work. A quiet, loyal, and gentle man, Mel was a devout Christian who loved his family very much.  He will be missed. Visitation for Melvin will be held on Monday, February 12th, from 7-9 p.m., with a service to follow on Tuesday February 13 at 11 a.m. at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. The family will gather at the North Sydney Pensioners Hall after the funeral service for a reception where refreshments will be served. We invite you to join us to share memories of Melvin’s life.
