  • GAMMON, David George

Coldbrook, NS July 22, 1949 - February 3, 2024 David George Gammon – 74, of Coldbrook, passed away February 3, 2024 in Orchard Court-Shannex, Kentville with his loving wife and two daughters at his side. Born July 22, 1949 in Dartmouth NS, son of the late Raymond and Hazel (Patterson) Gammon. David grew up in Dartmouth and spent the last 50 years with his wife in the Annapolis Valley. His career in construction started early in Dartmouth with Frank Spinney which led him to move to the Valley where he worked with both Frank and Greg Spinney, and they remained lifelong friends. During the early 1980s he was co-owner of Valley Scrap, Kentville with Frank Piwek. He and Frank spent some memorable and enjoyable years in the scrap business which included dismantling the Windsor Bridge, the Graves Juice plant and a fish plant in Lunenburg. Remnants of his scrap business remained with him throughout his lifetime including the apple juice cans that he stored his nails and screws in and many pieces of metal he saved for future use. After the scrap business David was a self-employed carpenter building new homes, doing small repairs and odd jobs around the valley. He was always willing to help anyone out. He ended his career working as the maintenance manager at the Blomidon Inn in Wolfville, NS. David was a member of St. Paul & St. Stephen United Church, Kentville until it closed in 2014. One of his favourite pastimes was playing cards and he often stopped on his way home to have a cup of tea and cookie with his mother-in-law, Pauline and play a game of Rummy. He also looked forward to the Sunday afternoons spent at her house with Vicki playing Rook and having a DQ Meal Deal. His other regular pastime was Saturday morning community breakfast in any of the local communities with his good friend, David Corkum. His favourites were the fishcakes at St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, and in Morden where he always purchased two extra fish cakes to take to his older friend Bryson Crowell. David enjoyed the little things life had to offer – a good cup of tea, a nice cookie or muffin, a walk with his wife, be it on a beach, in the woods or just down the road. He had a strong moral compass. Even when he had a serious injury on the job you would only hear "shoot or sugar" out of his mouth. And in these last few years he handled the challenges presented by Lewy Body Dementia with grace. David is survived by his wife, Victoria "Vicki" and two daughters, Keri (Collin), Coldbrook; and Krista (Travis) Moore and grandchildren, Sophia and Parker Moore, Freeport, Digby Co., NS; brother, Percy (Cathy), Fall River NS; sister, Susan (Brian) George, Phillips Harbour, NS; his mother-in-law, Pauline MacGregor, Greenwich NS; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Stanley, aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank the staff at Med A Valley Regional Hospital and at Mountain Lea Lodge. Special thanks to all staff, CCAs, LPNs and RNs at Orchard Court for their kindness and compassionate support during the year he was there. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service and celebration of life will take place in the spring. Donations can be made to Maritime Brain Tissue Bank to help with the ongoing research of Lewy Body Dementia and other types of Dementia: Maritime Brain Tissue Bank c/o Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine PO Box 15000 Halifax NS B3H 4R2.

  • MOCKFORD, Lorraine Yvonne Elizabeth

Kingston, NS September 3, 1956 - February 2, 2024 On Friday, February 2nd, 2024, at 10:30 in the morning, Lorraine Mockford died. Bathed in the love of her family, she closed her eyes and found her final peace. Lorraine was born in Orangeville, Ontario, on September 3rd, 1956, to Helene and Jeff. She was their eldest daughter and was a big sister to Jacqueline (Lee) and David. While a child, her family moved to Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, before finally settling in Victoria, BC. It was in Victoria that she met the love of her life, Steve; they married in 1972. Their 50-year union produced three children: Damion (Sheila), Tiffany (Rob), and Willow. With fierce will and determination Lorraine always pursued higher education. Raising her children while working full time, she managed to carve out the time to attain a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Alberta and later her master’s in education focusing on community college leadership from the University of PEI. Her professional career included over 25 years of service to the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). She worked mainly in Health and Human Services, having a hand in the creation of the Early Childhood Studies program before working as an instructional designer, helping pioneer the NSCC’s adoption of online learning and blended learning. Following retirement, her focus included volunteering and facilitating for the Virtual International Day of the Midwife, being program coordinator for Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education and continuing to occasionally teach under contract for the NSCC. Lorraine was a spiritual force of nature; she valued her friendships deeply and stood strong as her family’s matriarch. She had a particular pride in her four “grandies”, Rain, Aunaka, Cole (Chelsee), and Jessica, and helped mould them into the wonderful people they are today. Lorraine wished to echo her husband Steve’s final words to "do collective good" but also wanted to urge others to get into “good trouble” by calling out injustice when you see it. Life is not a spectator sport; jump in and get messy. Her children would like to thank their family and friends who have offered support and love during this difficult time. There will be a private interment in Burlington Cemetery, with a celebration of life planned in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Lorraine asked for donations to be made to the Steve Mockford Memorial Student Research Award, care of the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute.
