Wedgeport, NS October 25, 1925-January 24, 2024 Age 98 of Wedgeport, passed away on January 24, 2024 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth. Born in Belleville, she was a daughter of the late Josué and Rose Aimée (Babin) Pottier. Lorraine was a WWII veteran and a proud member of the Wedgeport Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155. Lorraine is survived by nephews, Marc Fortin (Sylvie St. Pierre) and Jean Guy Fortin (Christine Bouchard); grandniece, Marie Josée; and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Cottreau; siblings, Alfred Pottier and Therèse Pottier (Jean Joseph Fortin). A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 11 a.m. in Saint Michel Catholic Church, Wedgeport with a burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Wileville, NS December 16, 1960 - January 24, 2024 In Loving Memory of Dorothy "Dolly" Millicent Arenburg Dorothy Millicent Arenburg, born on December 16, 1960, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, peacefully passed away on January 24, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Grace Oxford. Her early life in Newfoundland was a chapter that paved the way for an extraordinary love story. After meeting Randall at the hotel where she worked, he swept her away to Nova Scotia, where Dolly and Randall embarked on a 35-year marriage, characterized by a love like no other. Dolly, a woman of profound love and incredible resilience, navigated various job roles, including call center positions, where she formed lasting friendships. Dedicated years were also spent at home, raising her children, and extending her nurturing care to other children in the home as well. A source of immeasurable joy for Dolly was her role as a grandmother. Her pride and love for her grandchildren, Noah, Finn, and Abigail, knew no bounds, creating bonds that will echo through generations. Dolly's zest for life manifested in her love for adventure with her husband and family. She found delight in spending time at Rayport Campground, embarking on road trips, enjoying scenic drives, and relishing the simple pleasures of shopping and self-care, always with a flair for getting her hair and nails done. Together with Randall, she crafted a treasure trove of memories through their travels to destinations like Las Vegas, Bermuda, Grand Bahamas, and Florida. Each journey marked not only by the places they visited but by the shared laughter and moments that defined their life together. A recent description by a friend perfectly captures Dolly's essence - a "beautiful soul and heart" who would go to great lengths for anyone in need. Kind, caring, and devoted, Dolly's impact on the lives she touched will be a lasting legacy. As we bid farewell to Dolly, let us remember her not with sorrow but with gratitude for the love, laughter, and warmth she brought into our lives. May her spirit continue to shine brightly in the memories we hold dear. Liverpool, NS January 20, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, Sonny (Walter) Fancie. He departed this world on January 20, 2024. Sonny leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and cherished memories that will forever echo in our hearts. Sonny is survived by his devoted wife, Cindy, and their sons Brandon and Ryan (Lindsay). He was a pillar of strength and a source of unwavering support for his family. Sonny’s love and guidance will continue to inspire his children and grandchildren Justice, Solace, Grayer, and Aubrey. He is fondly remembered by his sister, Pam (Edward) Whynot, and is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Eunice. Sonny is reunited with his brothers Ronald Weir and Dean (Isobel) Weir, and sisters Debbie Burgess and Wendy Moreau and long time friend Donny Turner. He leaves behind a cherished brother-in-law, Richard Burgess, and sister-in-law, Margaret Love, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, friend Farmer Mike (Val) Gefle and a host of other friends. Sonny’s impact on the lives of those around him was profound. His warm smile, generous spirit, and genuine care for others created lasting connections. He will be remembered not only for the love he shared within his family but also for the friendships that enriched his life. His passion for fishing, golfing, and travel spoke volumes about his adventurous spirit and the joy he found in exploring the world around him. He loved the many travel adventures he had with his niece Cheryl Wentzell and her husband Courtney. In the kitchen, Sonny’s culinary skills were a testament to his love for creating and sharing. His mastery of East Coast dishes and seafood chowder showcased not only his love for cooking but also his deep connection to his roots. Amherst, NS January 22, 2024 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Donald Gordon Trenholm.  Don passed away at the age of 77 on Monday, January 22, 2024 with his loving wife by his side. Born in Amherst, NS, he was a son of the late Harold and Beryl (Minette) Trenholm. Don was born, raised and retired in Amherst NS. He  held a BSc. (Agr.) in Soil Science, as well as a major in Psychology. In his early years he was a contractor and an entrepreneur. He went on to work in a wide range of positions using his education.  He worked with Fisheries and Oceans Canada as a Senior Habitat Biologist. He was Supervisor of the NL Soil and Plant Laboratory; Regional Chemist for Forestry Canada, NWPA/EA; Officer for the Canadian Coast Guard; and a Senior Habitat Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada before his retirement. Other past professional interests included being member of the NL Farm Loan Board, Chair of the Land Development Advisory Authority (LDAA) Appeal Board, Regional Director and National Vice President of the Professional Institute of Public Servants of Canada. During retirement he remained a very active member of his community.  He was the current chair of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs Board of Directors. He was a chair for Trinity St. Stephen's United Church Council, a member of the NS Environmental Assessment Board, past member and past Treasurer of the CREDA Board, past Chair of the Camp Ta-Wa-Si Board of Directors, and was an active member of the RCAF Cumberland Wing. In his spare time and particularly during retirement, he enjoyed gardening and rescuing animals. Left with precious and fond memories are his loving wife: Ruth (Follett); daughter Suzanne (Robert) Spence; son Robert (Sheila) Trenholm; grandchildren Meghan (JD) Fines, Emily, Daniel, and Nicole; great-grandchildren: Scarlett, Sophie, Nevaeh, Zahra, Robbie; brother Lockey (Dixie, Debbie, Richard); sister Beverly (Jean, Lesley, Jamie) Tanguay; Aunt Marge Bennett (Donna, David, Don);  brother in law Jeff (Emeline, Matthew, Jason) Follett; sister in law Janet (Michael, Heidi, Christa) Bates as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of extended family and friends in Amherst, NS, Corner Brook and St. John's NL. Kentville, NS January 24, 2024 Karen Diane (MacKeen) Power passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024. Karen’s greatest loves were her family and her home. Karen and Clarence lived in various places in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia due to Clarence’s work. As a close-knit family, she often missed living near her daughter, Angela. Upon retirement, they moved to the same apartment building as their daughter. This apartment building became a community, and we want to thank all the wonderful friends that our neighbours have become. Thank you for condolence cards, food and love. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and shopping for unique, inexpensive treasures that made her house a home. Karen was an amazing interior decorator. Her home was always beautiful and welcoming. Her smile and presence could light up a room. She was our greatest confidant and cheerleader in life and would do anything for her family. Her kindness, warmth and gentle spirit, with a quiet strength would get her through some of life’s greatest challenges. She was a silent warrior. Karen was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia and was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Cyril MacKeen as well as her sister, Barbara MacKeen. She is survived by her husband, Clarence; daughter, Angela (Fred Rogers) as well as her two step-grandchildren, Nicholas Bent and John Rogers. Grandsons came into her life about 10 years ago when Angela and Fred met. John and Nicholas were the light of her life. While she lived in Kentville, she worked as a secretary for the post office and was involved in Kinettes, even serving as the President. Clarence also belonged to Kinsmen. She loved the Apple Blossom Parade and attended the Princess Tea on several occasions. Thank you to the Victoria Order of Nurses, Northwood and Palliative Care, Halifax. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Sampsonville, NS October 14, 1936 - January 25, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret “Doris” Landry of Sampsonville, who passed away peacefully on January 25, at her home in the Richmond Villa. Born in Sampsonville on October 14, 1936 to the late Harry and Martena (Burke) Landry. She was a natural caregiver, spending many years volunteering before eventually working as a Personal Caregiver at the Richmond Villa and then later taking care of her siblings. Doris married her late husband Raymond “Ray” John Landry on November 11,1957. A devoted member of the St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Doris shared her love of music as part of the choir for several years. The only thing stronger than her faith was the love she had for her family and the Montreal Canadiens. Doris could often be found playing her guitar at community concerts, the Richmond Villa and house parties, playing BINGO or fishing. Doris was predeceased by her husband Raymond “Ray” John Landry, her beloved son Erwin, her brother Cletus (late Peggy), and sisters Beth and Lola (late Cornelius). Doris will be missed dearly by her children Andrew (Patsy) of Sampsonville, Glenora (John) of St. Peter’s, June (Leonard) of Lower Sackville, and Shaun (Laurie) of St. Peter’s. Nanny had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren Candace (Jonathan), Clarissa (Cody), Chelsey (Niklas), Kerstin (Logan), Donaven (Jessica), Leonard (Meaghan), Martena, and great grandchildren Brooklyn, Oliver, Mélanie, Taylin. She is also survived by brothers Conrad (Dianne), Wally (Bernadette) and Bernie, and her sister Marilyn (Al) . The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Richmond Villa who took exceptional care of Doris throughout her final years. Your love and devotion to all of the residents is extraordinary and does not go unnoticed. Kentville, NS December 8, 1930 - January 24, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Francis "Keith" Boates on January 24, 2024, in the Valley Regional Hospital. Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, on December 8, 1930, Keith was the son of F. Irving and Verna (Smith) Boates. He attended Kings County Academy and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. After working in the insurance industry for a few years, Keith made a monumental career change when he and his wife, Charlotte (Ritcey) purchased a large apple farm in 1960 and moved their family to Woodville, Nova Scotia. Keith became quite a pioneer during his 50+ years in the farming sector when he not only grew apples but also promoted various ways of marketing them. Initially Keith set out to export apples on a large scale; however, in the 1970s, his business focus changed to the local market and direct marketing. He opened, what is believed to be, the first U-pick in Nova Scotia, operated a fruit stand for 30 years at Bayer’s Road Shopping Centre, exported apples to Newfoundland by delivering them himself in a tractor trailer, produced sweet apple cider and apple cider vinegar, and later began transitioning the farm to organic with his son who continues to run Boates Farm today. Keith was past President of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association and member of the United Church of Canada. As a boy, Keith always had a great interest in all things electrical and mechanical. In 1948, at the age of 18, Keith sought out a 1922 Stanley Steamer touring car. He drove this for many years, which fulfilled his interest in steam power. During his lifetime he owned steam, gas, diesel, and electric cars. He always claimed the ’22 steamer was quieter than his 2022 electric Kona and that the touring car had a far greater vantage point when travelling. Keith loved spending time in his workshop where he always had a ‘project’ on. Among many, they included building his own continuous cider press, vinegar production equipment, apple harvester, solar heated swimming pool and reconfiguring his current home on the farm with passive solar, geothermal and photovoltaic where over the last few years, he used mostly solar energy. Keith was considered a man ahead of his time. Keith is survived by his wife Charlotte (Ritcey) of 69 years; children, Janet (Doug) McDougall; Heather Boates (Ken Graham); and Brian (Karma Chickoski); grandchildren, Kyle (Sally), Sean (Joline), Sofia (Quincy), Lee (Jill), Kaleb and Clark; great grandchildren, Isabelle and Calvin; brother Matthew (Holly) and sister Catherine Green, along with nieces and nephews. Keith was predeceased by his parents and a brother in infancy. As per Keith’s request, a private family service and interment has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at the Woodville Community Hall on Sunday, February 11 from 2-4 pm. In Keith’s memory, be sure to buy local, re-use and recycle. Meadowvale, NS March 26, 1933 - January 22, 2024 Sabean, Linden Edward, age 90, of Meadowvale, formerly of South Williamston, NS, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, in Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Mount Rose, NS, he was a son of the late Insley and Lottie (Blanchard) Sabean. Linden was a painter for G.W. Sampson Ltd for many years and later became a self-employed truck driver. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his children, Stoney Sabean, South Williamston; Velvet Bromley, Meadowvale; Gary Sabean, Middleton; Jason Sabean, Margaretsville; sister, Leta, Berwick; brother, Robert “Bob”, Berwick; grandchildren, Tanya, Teila, Max, Caterina, Dylan, Abby, Bradon, Dawson, Meadow and Ruby; great grandchildren, Colton, Tristan, Connor, Kiera, Justice and numerous nieces and nephews. North River, NS January 23, 2024 Eldon McCurdy "Chappy" Chapman – 80, North River, passed away unexpectedly at home, as a result of heart failure, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Gerald and Beatrice (Wellwood) Chapman. Eldon worked for CN/VIA for over 30 years as a brakeman and conductor. An avid sportsman, he was well-known in the Truro area for his incredible softball pitching abilities and became "Truro Famous" in 1981 when he threw a no-hitter while on the Fletcher’s Flames team; he also played with Brookfield Elks, Ponderosa Screaming Eagles and also for many fundraising softball games and tournaments. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling and hockey and was inducted into the Truro Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He enjoyed playing 45s at the Air Force Club, playing poker at Emmerson Club and was a pool shark who was very good at billiards. His grandkids brought him great joy and he loved going for drives with them, eating out and train trips. Eldon’s dry sense of humour will be "missed", especially his never ending supply of "Dad Jokes" which would make you roll your eyes and have you grumbling; the more you laughed, the more he would laugh with you! Brazil Lake, NS November 20th, 1954 - January 19th, 2024 Durkee, Larry Wayne- age 69 of Brazil lake, Yarmouth Co., NS passed away suddenly at home on Friday, January 19,2024. Larry was born on November 20,1954 and grew up in Wellington, NS. He was a son to the late Lyman and Edna (Thompson) Durkee. He was a jack of all trades, some of which include, carpentry, mining, and paving. He retired after 23 years of service as a heavy equipment mechanic at Standard General in Calgary. He lived a very adventurous lifestyle, making many friends along the way. Enjoyed hunting, camping, spending time in the woods, traveling, Nasar races, music and never missing an episode of Jeopardy. But what he cherished most of all was sharing his time and wisdom with his family. Mahone Bay, NS August 2, 1973 - January 22, 2024 Pamela May Segger born August 2, 1973, died at home in Mahone Bay, NS. on the afternoon of January 22, 2024. An energetic bright light, an elegant Jetsetter; Pamela was a dancer, teacher, coach, sailer, traveller, friend and master organizer. Pamela touched many in her varied and interesting life. She was a lifelong runner and dancer and in her teens, a member and coach of the National cheer-team. Pamela was born in Nova Scotia but spent many years in Alberta where she worked in insurance, managing an investment advisory team at Merrill Lynch. In 2003 she joyously returned to Nova Scotia with her partner Lloyd Williams. A life-long learner, entrepreneur and creator she co-founded It’s Alive Theatre Co., and started the Phoenix Dance Studio, where she taught both adults and children and coached a competitive acro-dance troupe to multiple awards. In 2010 Pamela graduated from UCLA’s creative screen writing program. Her love of stage and screen led to her co-founding the Lunenburg Doc Fest. in 2013. Over the past ten years in her role as Executive Director, Pamela grew the festival to international status, instigating and supporting a number of important initiatives for the region’s documentary film community. She was instrumental in founding the Documentary Organization of Canada’s Breakthrough Program, which gave filmmakers from Indigenous, Black and People of Colour communities a start in their filmmaking careers. She also initiated the LDF Delegation, which annually leads local documentary filmmakers to national and international markets and festivals. In 2023 Pamela received Screen Nova Scotia's Lifetime Achievement Award. Pamela has left a trail of admirers, and touched many. You could write a book about all of Pamela’s explorations, travels and passions. In the past few years her abundant energies had also turned to creating with everything from writing, scrapbooking and “Shield Maidens” to exquisite charcuterie boards. She was an incredible friend, a stellar listener, a deeply thoughtful, kind and generous person. Pamela’s radiant, graceful and elegant beauty touched everyone she encountered. Her greatest legacies lie simply in the way she just WAS, perfectly, Pamela. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her adoptive mother, Ila Jones, brothers Dwayne, Daryle, and Deryk, as well as her newly-found birth family, Justine & Erica Harris, nieces & nephews, Shannon, Kyle, Coletyn, Carter and Dawson. New Ross, NS January 22, 2024 Dorey, Laurie Albert, 81, of New Ross, NS, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by his family. Born in South Alton, he was a son of the late Arthur William and Annie Louise (Knockwood) Dorey. Laurie was a man with an unbeatable work ethic. He worked as a carpenter with a career spanning over 50 years. Throughout his career, he was involved in many big projects, including when he was appointed Shop Steward during the construction of the Coldbrook and District School. In addition to his carpentry skills, Laurie was a skilled mechanic and could fix anything with an engine. He was very mechanically gifted; it appeared all Laurie needed to do was listen to your car and he could tell you what was wrong with it. These skills he passed on to his sons so they could repair their vehicles. He always said a job worth doing was a job worth doing well – always give your best. When he wasn’t hard at work, Laurie loved to be in the woods, fishing, snowmobiling or cutting wood. His favourite pastime, however, was hunting with his sons. He was an avid hunter who also would trap fox, rabbits, beavers and bobcats, hunt for deer, and he especially enjoyed trips to the Cape Breton Highlands to hunt moose. While in the earlier days he may not have caught much with six boys trailing behind him, he raised them all to be accomplished hunters and outdoors-oriented men. Laurie was also known to be incredibly strong, having a perfect arm-wrestling record with his boys. After one match, the boys realized how truly strong their father was. He was very principled and could also be quite headstrong and direct – you would certainly know where you stood with him, but this never overshadowed his giving nature - he was a man who would do anything for anyone. Laurie took great pride in his Mi’kma’ki heritage. He so enjoyed his pleasant discourses with DNR officials on Mi’kmaq Treaty Rights. Laurie is survived by wife, Kathy Lorraine (Salsman) Dorey, sons; John William, Laurie Allan, Brian Kevin, Timothy Albert, Toney Stephen, Jeffrey Myles, and daughter, Ronda Lee Toney (Dorey); brothers, Millage and Edward Dorey, many grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren as well a numerous nieces and nephews. As well as his parents, Laurie was predeceased by brother, Henry Dorey; sisters, Hattie Sproule and Florence Campeau as well as his first wife Betty Lyle Reese. As per Laurie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. Family will be having an informal celebration of life so that his many family and friends can enjoy time together sharing stories and food. Celebration of life will be held on February 3, 2024 from 1-5pm at the Forties Community Center, 1787 Forties Rd, New Ross.
