BRUCE, Sonja Valina

Dartmouth, NS

January 30, 1971 - May 25, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Sonja Valina Bruce Brown, who left us on May 25, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Sonja is survived by her four children: Cody Grant, Michael Grant (Krystal), Ryan Bruce (Allison) and JaCynda Bruce(Kyle); and her seven grandchildren: Madison, Blake, Lillian, Paisley, Sophia, Carson, and Autumn.

Sonja was a beloved member of the Brown family and a cherished friend to many.

She is survived by her parents, Cheryl and Dexter Brown of Windsor, Nova Scotia. She was the eldest of her siblings: Tanya (Ismael) Aquino; LaLena Brown-Lavigne (Maxime), Craig (Chelsea) Brown and Aaron MacLeod. She had many nieces and nephews who she cherished.

Sonja was predeceased by her first daughter, Tanyssa, her father, Ivan Brown, and her stepfather, Bruce MacLeod.

Sonja loved her children and adored her grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them. She shared her joy and interests in baking with them and her love of animals and loved being involved in their lives. Sonja was a homemaker, and she loved spending time with her family.

Sonja was known for her kindness, her laugh, and she had a profound impact on everyone who loved her. Throughout her life, Sonja exemplified the values of generosity, compassion, and dedication. She was an animal lover and had many pets throughout her life, including her chihuahua Amigo, her parrots Gizmo and (most recently) Loco. She rescued several animals over the years. Once she rescued a baby racoon, aka “Ricker” and raised it for a year. Sonja had a houseful of beautiful plants, she was an excellent cook and was known for her baking, especially her out-of-this world apple pie.

When Sonja found something she was interested in, she was incredibly passionate about it. She absolutely loved and spoiled her animals. Anyone in her life felt her love, as she never ended a conversation without saying, “I love you.” Sonja's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Though she may be gone, the light she brought into the world will continue to shine through the lives she touched. Now whenever we see a ladybug, not only will we think of Tanyssa, but we will also think of Sonja too.

A celebration of life was held on June 2, 2024, at Victorian Estates, 115 Ochterloney Street in Dartmouth. Family and friends gathered to celebrate Sonja's life and honor her memory.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA reflecting Sonja's passion for animals.
