Kanellakos, John Dimitrios

Halifax, NS

September 20, 2024

KANELLAKOS, John Dimitrios It is with profound sadness that the family of John Kanellakos announces his passing on Friday, September 20, 2024 at the age of 86 in the Halifax Infirmary.

He was born in Anavriti, Greece in 1938, the oldest son of the late Dimitrios and Aspasia Kanellakos. He arrived in Halifax by ship at Pier 21 on March 2, 1958 and travelled to Springhill to work with the Vlahos family in the Candy Kitchen. He returned to Halifax where he partnered with his cousin, Bill Vlahos and opened Cousins Snack Bar. He was eventually joined by his three brothers, who together established Cousins Restaurant on Lady Hammond Road, which became an iconic fixture in North End Halifax. Success in the restaurant business allowed him and his brothers to form Cousins Realty, which he continued to manage until his death.

He is survived by his devoted wife of over 60 years Helen (Mitrakos); son James (Dimitra) and daughter, Matina (Kent); grandchildren, John, Andrew, Eleni and Elena. He is also survived by his brothers George (Bessie), William (Helen) and Peter (Kiki), alongside numerous cherished nephews, nieces and cousins.

John was very proud of his Greek heritage, especially his home village of Anavriti and the neighbouring town of Sparti, where he spent many summers. He was active in St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, served on the governing council for a number of years, and helped in transitioning the community from a small building on Morris Street to the beautiful church and community centre on Purcell’s Cove Road. Most of all,

John loved and was proud of his family, especially his beloved grandchildren, who adored their Pappou.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Staff of the Dickson Centre Dialysis Unit and Halifax Infirmary Unit 6.2 for their compassion and care for John.

Visitation will take place Monday, Sept. 23 from 6-9:00pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive. Funeral Service at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday Sept. 24 at 11:00am 1146 Purcell’s Cove Rd., Halifax.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
