It is with great sadness that we announce that John “Oaksie” MacInnis, 76 years old, passed away in Hospital due to recent declining health surrounded by family.
He was born and lived in Halifax, He was predeceased by his parents: William and Annie (Praught) MacInnis, originally from PEI, his brother: Alex MacInnis and brother-in-law: Harry Doubleday.
He was the loving brother of Mary Doubleday, Halifax, and Elizabeth (Liz) Purcell, Lower Sackville. He adored his sisters. He was a wonderful "Uncle Johnny" to Cheryl, Heather, Gary, Lynn, Karen, Todd, Leanne, and Nancy. He also had many great nieces/nephew, great-great nieces/nephews who always put a smile on his face. He was also a Godfather many times. He loved talking about all of his family and took a genuine interest in their lives.
Oaksie worked at the Halifax Shipyards for 40+ years before retiring. He enjoyed his work and took pride in it. He also tended bar at the Halifax Surf Club many years ago.
He enjoyed hosting may gatherings at his home which was a place where friends and family could enjoy warmth, hugs, and laughter.
In younger years he enjoyed playing sports and later years he enjoyed walking around town and taking in the festivities.
His love for sports was so evident. He was a true “Habs” fan – win or lose. Other sports interests included boxing, car racing, baseball, and family or friends playing minor sports.
He always embraced his “Island” heritage and took many enjoyable trips to P.E.I.
Oaksie’s cousins, the Arsenault family, embraced him with love, and he was simply “Uncle Oaksie” to so many of them.
He had a large group of near-and-dear friends that meant the world to him. He would say thank you for your true friendship.
He was dependable and happy to be available to lend a helping hand. His family will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 pm, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers, Rd and a funeral Service will be held, 11 am, Thursday, June 27, 2024 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Bayers Rd. Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the I.W.K. Hospital or charity of your choice.
