MacNeil, Mary Theresa, of Frankville, Antigonish County, passed away on July 24, 2025,in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, five days shy of her 83rd birthday.
Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Laughlin and Theresa (Rogers) Mills.
Mary graduated from Cape Breton Business College with her secretarial diploma and then began working in the Registrar’s Office at St. Francis Xavier University. From there, she took a job in Halifax, and it was here that she met her future husband, Mike. She and Mike moved to Auld’s Cove when they married, and she worked at Alex Gillies Motors. She worked with Mike at Mike’s Irving in Mulgrave until its closing, after which they both became jail guards with the Port Hawkesbury and Antigonish RCMP detachments.
Mary loved when the hummingbirds came back every year, and she always recorded the date of their return. She loved gardening and flowers, fishing, and fiddle music. She adored her cat, Katie, but most of all, she was so proud of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Angela, Monk’s Head; son, Stephen (Cheryl), Fall River; grandchildren, Tyler, Kailey, and Michael; sisters, Agnes (late Bill) Myette, Antigonish; Marjorie (late Bob) Ferguson, Truro; Jean (Bennie) ten Brinke, Glenroy; Jeanette Mills, Truro; Annie (Darrell) Maxwell, Brierly Brook; brothers, Angus (Anne), Meadow Green; Jimmy (Dianne), Meadow Green; sister-in-law, Wilma Mills; and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Mike; sister, Marcella (John) MacDonald; brother, L.J.; and brother, John Joseph, in infancy.
As per Mary’s request, there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 2:00pm in St. Andrew’s Church, St. Andrews, with Reverend Dennis Lamey presiding.
Burial in South River Cemetery.
