Monk-Townsend, Norma Bernice

Beaver Bank, NS

December 21, 1936 - July 13, 2026

It is with great sadness that the family of Norma Bernice Monk-Townsend announces her passing. Born on December 21, 1936, in Murphy Cove, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Norma was the beloved daughter of the late Louis Robert Monk and Lottie Belle (Murphy) Monk.

"Whether she was walking the beaches she loved, sharing stories, or gathering her family around the table, Norma found joy in life's simple moments and the people she loved most."

Norma was first and foremost a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Being a stay-at-home mom was the role she cherished most, and her family was always the centre of her world. She found her greatest happiness when everyone was together, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

Raised on Nova Scotia's beautiful Eastern Shore, Norma developed a lifelong love of the ocean. She found joy in swimming, taking long walks on the beach, gardening, and painting, where her artistic talent shone through in the many beautiful works she created. She also loved scenic drives along the coast, searching for antiques at yard sales, and, in her later years, playing mini golf. She loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking for those she loved. Her famous strawberry shortcake was a family favorite, and one of her own favorite meals was fresh fish served with mashed potatoes. In quieter moments, Norma enjoyed curling up with a good mystery novel or listening to the music of Dr. Hook. She was known for her kind heart, quick wit, playful sense of humor, and feisty spirit. Caring, compassionate, and always ready with a joke or a smile, she leaves behind countless memories that her family will cherish forever.

Norma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roy Townsend (2010); her parents, Louis and Lottie Monk; her brothers Floyd and Wayne; and her sisters Sandy and Heather.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Rick Edwards (Connie), Debra Edwards, and Tony Edwards (Dawn); her stepchildren Andrew Townsend and Ramona Coolen, her beloved grandchildren Tamara Vallis (Rob), Samantha Edwards, Stephie Edwards (Angus), Janna Storm, Andrew Edwards, Missy Edwards, Max Edwards, Paige Edwards, Zachary Townsend, Charlie Townsend, and Lillie Coolen; as well as many treasured great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Kay and Ferne, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Her legacy lives on in every family gathering, every walk along the beach, every Christmas tradition lovingly continued, and every story shared around the table. Norma's gentle heart, love of family, and appreciation for life's simple pleasures will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society
