Dartmouth, NS
December 24, 1925 - February 9, 2024
Mary Morton, 98, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia passed away on Feb. 9, 2024.
Mary was born on Christmas Eve in 1925 in the outport fishing village Cape La Hune, Newfoundland. She learned Morse code and began working in the community’s telegraph office while still in school, and left home to immigrate to Nova Scotia during World War II.
Mary worked for many years with Nova Scotia Light and Power. She was a prolific knitter, and enjoyed caring for her cats (as well as the occasional squirrel or racoon). She loved dancing and skating with her husband Gerald and spending time with their friends at the Findlay Community Centre. She was a devoted grandmother, deep-frying endless batches of french fries for whoever would show up for lunch.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; son George; parents, Arthur and Blanche Bagg (Pink); and siblings, Gladys, Effie, Suzie, Max, Nathan, and Findlay.
Mary is survived by her daughter Geraldine (Philip); grandchildren Nathan (Katrina) and Spencer (Amanda); great-grandchildren Calliope, Isaac, and Levi; and many nieces and nephews, including Sarah and Millie.
Many gracious thanks to the caring staff at Oakwood Terrace and the Dartmouth General Hospital.
In lieu of a funeral service, please celebrate Mary’s life however you wish: with a donation to a local animal shelter, planting a tree or some milkweed seeds, or with a simple act of kindness.
