SKELTON, Richard Joseph (Dick)

Dartmouth, NS

February 2, 1942 - February 7, 2024

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our dear, departed husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Dick Skelton, who passed away peacefully on February 7th at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Nursing home in Halifax.  He had resided there for the last 8 months with a truly remarkable group of caregivers.

Dick was born on February 2, 1942 in Timmins, Ontario.  The eldest son of Mathew Skelton and Lillian (Edmison) Skelton.

Dick was predeceased by his parents, and sister, Kathleen Jean MacNicol (Jack).  He is survived by his brother, John Douglas Skelton (Karen) of Calgary.

Dick also is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlene (Nicki) Skelton of Dartmouth, his son, John C. Skelton (Cheryl) also of Dartmouth, and Shelley Skelton (Scott) of Calgary, and Grandchildren Nadia C. Skelton and Vanya C. Skelton, and great-grandson Remi Skelton, all of Dartmouth.   And in addition, many nieces and nephews.

Dick started his aviation maintenance career with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Canadian Navy, and continued working for various helicopter and aviation companies in civilian life.  In his younger years, Dick was active as a recreational pilot, scuba diver, and curler.   Following retirement from Atlantic Turbine in PEI, Dick and his wife Nicki became active Snowbirds in Avon Park, Florida while enjoying the RV life.

Upon resettlement back to Dartmouth, Dick’s greatest loves were his family and friends.  An avid reader and player of cards, he celebrated his first “29” in cribbage at the ripe old age of 80, much to his son’s astonishment.

There will be no visitation, upon request.  There is a funeral Mass to be held Tuesday February 13th at 1:30 PM at St Clement Church on Gaston Road, Dartmouth.  A reception following the Mass will be held downstairs in the church hall.

Memorial donations, in Dick’s memory, may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Clement Church, any charity of your choice, or any nursing home of your choice.
