Halifax, NS
September 13, 1934 – June 02, 2025
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Roger Joseph Sumarah at the age of 90 on Monday, June 2, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones at the QEII Hospital.
Born on September 13, 1934, in Grindstone, Magdalene Islands, Roger was the son of the late William and Sadie (née Bashir) Sumarah.
He was predeceased by his brothers George, Henry, Michael, Charles, William Jr., and Frank Sumarah, as well as his sisters Flora Sumarah, Dorothy Antal, Nellie Sumarah, Helen Gagnon, and Mary Sumarah.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Jacqueline (née Dutruit); his son David Sumarah (Shannon); his daughter Lisa Sumarah; his adored and adoring grandchildren, Justin and Gavin Sumarah; his brothers Albert Sumarah (Dorothy) and Robert Sumarah; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Part of a large and close-knit Lebanese family—where family dinners often included more than twenty-five people—Roger shared an especially strong bond with his brothers Albert and Bob. Affectionately known around Halifax as “the three boys,” they were rarely seen apart, whether working, eating, or simply driving around together.
Roger spent his early adult years working in the family shipping business and later became co-owner of Argyle TV on Gottingen Street, where he proudly worked for 49 years.
One of Roger’s greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren—watching Justin play hockey at the arena or fixing things with Gavin. To them, he was their beloved Jiddo
A devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Roger never stopped hoping for that long-awaited Stanley Cup victory.
Visitation will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A service will follow on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with Deacon David Viscount presiding.
Donations in Roger’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
