YOUNG, Thomas Martin (Tommy)

Albert Bridge, NS

June 13, 1952 - July 15, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the sudden passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Thomas ‘Tommy’ Martin Young.

Born on June 13, 1952, in Sydney, Tommy was a son of Thomas Gerald and Vera Joanne (Evely) Young.

Tommy prided himself on his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Marie (MacNeil) Young; son, Steven (Bethany) Young; daughter, Laura (Anthony Bradley) Young; his pride and joy, grandchildren, Brendan and Emma; mother, Vera; sister, Donna (Leonard) Binns, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tommy was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gerald Young, and in-laws, John and Annie MacNeil.

Tommy was a dog-loving, friendly and social person, well-liked by those fortunate enough to know him. Famous for his Spaghetti and Meatballs, Tommy was always helping various sports organizations with fundraising. His love for cooking and kitchen savvy ways will live on through his daughter, Laura.

As a long-time member of the Sydney Curling Club, together with many close friends, Tommy helped organize events and ensured people enjoyed delicious food. When not in the kitchen, Tommy could be found hunting, fishing, golfing, curling, bowling, playing baseball, hockey, horseshoes, washer toss or simply enjoying a beer with friends and family. Of all the things he did, his most favourite times recently were watching Brendan and Emma play baseball, hockey, or simply enjoying a game of golf with them.

A hard-working man, in his earlier years, Tommy worked at a clothing factory in Toronto. He then moved back to Cape Breton and worked as a lobster fisherman followed by working at the pier rink. He then moved to Canada Post where he worked as a letter carrier for 30 years and made many long-time friends before retiring. In true Tommy style, one to not sit around, retirement didn’t last long. Together with his son, Steven, they embarked on the journey of business ownership, and purchased the French Club in Sydney. Amongst all the above he found time to start catering, where his daughter, Laura, then joined him after finding her passion for cooking. Tommy will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Thomas Young will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Jane Keller officiating.

Private family interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in memory of Tommy may be made to the SPCA, Cape Breton Chapter.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
