Eskasoni First Nation, NS July 22, 1968 - February 21, 2025 Rodney Joseph "Rex" Young passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his fiance Nelishia Cremo and children. Rodney was born on July 22, 1968 in Sydney, NS to his loving parents the late Mary Tena and late Walter Young Sr. He took pride in being raised and speaking the Mi'kmaq language in the largest Mi'kmaq community of Eskasoni. Rodney was also a member of the Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni. He took pride in music and singing in his Mi'kmaq language. He played many instruments including the guitar, harmonica, piano and fiddle. Rodney was a dedicated fisherman for 20+ years for the Eskasoni Fisheries. Rodney's passion was being out at sea and practicing his rights to fish. Rodney is survived by 5 daughters Tysha (Danny), Britina (Brooks), Delena (Gideon), Evelyn and Jada all of Eskasoni, 4 sons Bryce, Tyrone, Evander (Chaselyn) and Ta'tn all of Eskasoni and 10 grandchildren Courtes, Wyatt, Myles, Tasha, Virginia (Jenny), Jayla, Alaska, Makenna, Leia and Avaya. Rodney is also survived by siblings Walter Young jr., Fred Young, Eddie Young, Maynard Young (Jennifer), Isabel Young, Sandra Young, Eunice Cabot and Bernadina Young and best friends Michael Christmas, Chuck Gould, Donald Francis, Tokyo Herney, Amanda Johnson and his brothers as well as godchildren Tony Knockwood and MacKenzie Poulette all of Eskasoni, godfather Ben Sylliboy, aunt Mary Ellen Googoo, uncle Edward Joe and many nieces and nephews. Rodney was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mary Tena Young, sister Ann Poulette, brother Peter Young, nephew Douglas Young, great niece Cadence Young and godmother Theresa Marshall. He will forever be missed. A visitation will be held at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni on Thursday, March 6 starting at 7pm with a funeral mass taking place in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni on Saturday, March 8 at 10:00am. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery with a salite immediately following.

Amherst, NS February 27, 2025 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Helen Dora Burke, age 94, of Amherst and formerly of Springhill, NS, on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at All Saints Hospital in Springhill. Born in Springhill , she was a daughter of the late Mike and Rose Misken. Helen was a highly intelligent and creative woman who was also a gifted artist.  While mostly devoted to her painting, she also enjoyed anything to do with crafts and fibre arts like knitting and sewing.  She used to enjoy fishing and loved the outdoors.  Helen was always a loving, caring and devoted mother. Helen is survived by six sons, Michael (Debbie), Tremont, NS, Wayne (Catherine), Antigonish, NS, Stephen (Vicki), Margaretsville, NS, Paul (Vera), Florida, Kenneth, Alabama, and David (Iris), Chester, NS; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by the father of her children, Francis Burke; her siblings, Peter Misken and Mary Burke.   Honouring Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at the North Street Roman Catholic Cemetery at a later date. New Glasgow, NS April 2, 1948 - February 26, 2025 David grew up in a small town, raised his family in a small town and practiced law in a small town – but his life was big and full for which he was grateful.  He was a kind, thoughtful and clever person who was genuinely interested in others.  He never forgot a name, a face or especially a person’s story.   He passed away on February 26, 2025 due to complications from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) diagnosed March 2024. David tended to use his words sparingly and was modest about his accomplishments. The following will adhere to neither of these two principles.  David was born in Halifax, NS on April 2, 1948, as the eldest of Neil and Mary (Feron) Wallace’s ten children.  After a few years in Halifax and Cape Breton he settled with his parents and growing number of siblings in New Glasgow at the age of three.   David grew up in New Glasgow’s iconic north end where he enjoyed carefree days of playing street hockey, pick-up ball and exploring with the neighbourhood kids on worn out bikes. He moved to Windsor, Ontario for his junior high years and returned to New Glasgow to complete high school. He was valedictorian of the NGHS class of 1965 and went onto St.F.X. where he received his BSC degree. David then attended Dalhousie Law School, graduating in 1971.  David met Joan Moore in 1971 on a blind date - no apps involved. It was not until 1972 that they started dating.  David took a chance waiting that long, but it paid off. It was time together on a ski trip to Sugar Loaf where their love and respect for each other deepened. They decided to marry a few months later on July 7, 1973.   There was an ease and flow to their relationship which created a loving home for their three children Tom, Sarah and Daniel on Abercrombie Road in New Glasgow. As a family, they were lucky enough to enjoy summer cottage life together at Kings Head and many March Break ski vacations. David joined a New Glasgow law practice, where he was first to arrive every morning. But as is the beauty of a small town he managed to go home for lunch every day and spend time with his children. Over a 46-year period he practiced essentially every aspect of law – from murder to mortgages. In later years he represented the larger corporations in the region and the local university and hospitals. His deep involvement in his profession included several terms serving on the discipline and other committees of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Council. David was a community man.  Stalwart, steady and true. He led by example. This was recognized in 2012 by the Dalhousie Schulich School of Law awarding him the "Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service" recognizing lawyer’s contribution to community. David’s commitment was long and loyal, spanning over five decades for multiple causes at the same time. His community involvement started in 1972 when he was asked by the then president of Summer Street Industries to attend a meeting. Summer Street is an organization which supports persons with intellectual disabilities. When David arrived at the meeting his "host" was not in attendance and had failed to mention that he had resigned. David left the meeting as their new president, at the tender age of 23. He served as president for seven years. And thus began a dedication to Summer Street that spanned 53 years.   In the mid-seventies David and others advocated for the establishment of homes for intellectually disabled persons to live in their community.  Out of this effort Highland Community Residential Services (HCRS) was created of which he served as president. Both Summer Street and HCRS are still vibrant parts of the Pictou County community today.   In 1995 the need for funding for the expanding services of Summer Street necessitated the creation of a Foundation. David helped organize the Foundation’s first and most enduring project - the Summer Street Golf Scramble.   The first Scramble raised $8,400 and over the years it became a cherished and competitive tradition whose active participants raised increasing amounts each year culminating in $371,000 being raised in 2024. It is the most successful, single day golf fundraiser in Canada. David acted as chairman for the first 20 years and has participated in all 30 years of its existence. To date the Scramble has raised almost $5M. David and Joan became members of the Kinsmen family early on. David joined in 1971 and is a Past President of the club. He was also named a Life Member in 1990. Through Kinsmen he was involved in numerous community projects including teaching power skating and coaching little league baseball. He later joined the K-40 Club serving as president there as well. At the time of his death, he was both a member and Director of the Gyro Club of New Glasgow.   David and Joan were fortunate to enjoy lots of travel over the years. Ski trips with the kids in the early days and eight Hawaiian holidays with their children and grandchildren in later years. More recently David and Joan spent eight winters in Naples, Florida as well as three winters in New Zealand and one in Australia.   Trips and social occasions with their wonderful New Glasgow friends were a highlight. Their Gourmet Club traveled to France, Italy and sailed in the Caribbean. David arranged annual golf trips for their couples’ golf group including destinations such as Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, Bermuda, Hawaii, Las Vegas and Pebble Beach among others.   David was a long-time member and past president of the Abercrombie Country Club. He also enjoyed long distance running, hiking, kayaking and skiing. David was AI before AI. He had an amazing memory and could cite the date and details of any event, historical or personal. He loved doing the New York Times Sunday crosswords – the harder the better. His musical tastes ran from Garth Brooks to Leonard Cohen. And at the end of the day, he mixed a perfect martini. David is survived by his partner in life, his wife Joan and their children Tom (Kamloops, B.C.), Sarah (Squamish, B.C.) and Daniel (Bedford, N.S.). He will be cherished and greatly missed by the partners of his children Anise Barton, Patrick Reid and Hilary Everett, whom he admired so much. David’s six grandchildren will dearly miss "Papa", their role model, mentor, proudest advocate and often times trickster. They are Xavier and Feron Wallace, Gabrielle and Cameron Reid, and Caroline and Eloise Wallace. His siblings revered David and they could not have had a better brother to lead the way. They are Janet Wallace, Coleen Ross (Ian), Michael Wallace (Arlene), Carol Connor (Paul), Chris Wallace (Paulette) and Margot Cameron (Kevin). David is also survived by his uncle Donald (Bud) Feron and aunt Ruth (Wallace) Graham. He was predeceased by his father Neil in 1983; mother Mary in 2015; brothers Tom (1954), Peter (1995) and Paul (2023); and beloved granddaughter Sydney (2010). David benefitted greatly from receiving blood and platelet transfusions. Sydney, NS September 29, 1939 – February 25, 2025 The family of Fred wishes to announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Fred was born to Weston and Gertrude Lewis, Point Edward, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Leah; and brother, Leonard. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Cheryl; sons, Kirby (Jecca), Dana (Renee) and Corey (Lindsay); grandchildren, Aden, Rachel (Justin), Kaleb, Sydney, Riley and Myles; brother, Eric; and many nieces and nephews. Life on a dairy farm was not in Fred’s plan. He attended mechanics school in Halifax, returned to Sydney and was owner of the Irving station on Townsend Street for many years. Fred then worked for the Provincial Government as an Inspector for Motor Vehicles which saw him travel to all sorts of nooks and crannies around the province, visiting gas stations, inspecting big rigs, making the roads a safer place. Upon his retirement, Fred spent time at the Alderdale Greens Golf Club, working with his brother, Eric. As a member of Cape Breton Drivers Association, Fred was a driver for many festivals around Cape Breton, his favourite gig was taking VIPS for the Celtic Colours to venues where they needed to be, adding his own travelling commentary and sharing his knowledge about Nova Scotia. He also enjoyed taking visitors from the cruise ships on private tours of the Island, always providing special stories and jokes along the way. Fred had a wonderful sense of humour, was always ready with a joke or a story. He made friends wherever he went and with whomever he spoke to, no matter if it was in Cape Breton or his travels across North America. Fred had many adventures travelling but loved seeing his Cape Breton the most. Fred was an acting and founding member of the Cabot Snowmobile Club and was involved with the Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia, in which he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to the sport. Snowmobiling was Fred’s passion, especially in his beloved Cape Breton Highlands, later he would be grooming the trails. Fred could be found in the many trails, or at the Pig and Whistle, meeting up with friends new and old. Fred made a positive impact on everyone who met him. Fred was generous with his time and knowledge, sharing both anytime. Many people relied on Fred for advice on car issues, snowmobile problems, trail questions, or life in general. Fred was always up for a good conversation. Fred will be so very missed by his family. His devoted wife, Cheryl cherished every minute with her Freddy. His sons learned so much from their Dad, and have many, many happy memories of being outdoors camping, fishing, driving, hiking, snowmobiling and spending time with him. His love of the outdoors has been passed down to his sons and grandchildren, who also love to camp and hike. The boys often talk about always having a dirt bike, car, motorcycle or any other vehicle for their use. They all learned to drive in the field behind the house. Fred was the best friend, father, and person anyone could have met. Words can’t express how thankful we are to EHS, CBRH, ER staff, Dr. McDonnell and 4C, and the angels on 4E who gave Fred such a peaceful passing. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, March 1st from 2-5 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date. New Minas, NS February 20, 2025 Donald William "Don" Norton, 73, recently of New Minas, Nova Scotia and formerly of Adrian, Michigan passed away on February 20, 2025 with his two beloved children and his loving sister at his side. Born and raised in Shawinigan, Quebec, he was the son of Hal and Eileen (MacLeod) Norton. Despite a cancer diagnosis last fall, Don continued to make the most of every day, happily carrying on in his own quiet way with gratitude and strength. While in the hospital he joyfully claimed that he had lived a great life, gesturing to his children with a smile. With the passing of his loving wife, Isabella Norton (Del Col) of Toronto in 2010, he admirably continued to raise their then teenaged children, Michael Donald now of Baltimore, Maryland and Sarah Rose now of New York City. Don is also survived by his sister Pat Norton, sisters-in-law, and several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. From the time he knew of the existence of cars, he loved them passionately and ultimately enjoyed a career in auto race engineering which took him all over the world. He worked for Shierson Racing and world renowned Illmor Engineering, building engines for both Mercedes and Chevrolet that helped them win numerous Indy 500 championships. In 1992 he worked the Penske Indy car test with Formula 1 World champion Aryton Senna. Throughout the racing world, and among his family and friends, he was known as "Dyno Don". Don became a proud member of the Acadia Region Porsche Club after purchasing his own in 2022; it had been a life goal of his. He enjoyed cruising along the scenic roads of Nova Scotia for his last few years, teaching both his children to drive stick shift and memorably stating "we not only want to be good drivers, we want to be great drivers". A family celebration of Don’s life will be held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and a private burial will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, in the spring. Arlington, NS May 25, 1946 - February 20, 2025 It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John Henry Rand, of Arlington, N.S. John peacefully passed away in the early morning of Thursday, February 20th, 2025, at Valley Regional Hospital. John was surrounded by his loving family, after a strong and brave battle until the end. Born in Kentville on May 25th, 1946, John was the son of Kenneth and Lily (Lytle) Rand. In 1984 he married his wife, Beverly (Fraser) Rand, and they had three beautiful children, Lisa, Christine and Charles; and shared a wonderful 40 years together at the home John built for them, in Arlington. John grew up on the family sawmill and beef farm. He loved to put in a good day’s work at the mill and continued sawing and milling for 52 years, with his brother Everett by his side. He loved that he could share the same passion and work ethic with his son Charles, it brought him nothing but joy, and you could see just how proud he was when Charles took over the mill. John is and will forever be known as a man of many words; he just loved to talk and share old stories, with anyone who would listen. Those who knew John knew that they had to carve out a few hours whenever they visited the mill, because there was a good chance that they would be there far longer than they thought they would be. But above all, John’s family was the center of his world. He was a devoted husband and father and would do anything for anyone. Always thinking of everyone else, until the very end. You could often hear him saying "oh, I’m alright," whenever anyone asked how he was. He was a selfless, stubborn, and remarkable man, who will be greatly missed. But don’t worry, there’s a mini-John in Charles, so he will never be far. John is survived by his wife, Beverly Rand; his son Charles Rand (Monica), of Arlington; his daughter Christine Steenken (Casey), grandchildren Linnea, Sofia and Jade, of New Minas; and eldest daughter Lisa Rand (Tyler), grandchildren Kaida and Ember, of Kentville. John is also survived by his brother Everett Rand (Leslie) of Arlington; sisters, Mary Rand of Glenmont; and Susan Lyons (Bill) of Blomidon; his uncle, Ivan Rand (Lorraine) of Arlington; as well as several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his father Kenneth Rand, and mother Lily Rand of Arlington. In accordance with John’s wishes, a Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday February 25th in the White Family Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Kentville, NS, with a small reception to follow. Born in Sydney on July 31, 1945, Robert was the son of the late Lena and William Crane. Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evangeline; sons, Paul (Colleen) Crane and Stephen (Joanne) Crane; daughter, Kim (Allan) Brace; sisters, Anne (the late Robert) MacDonald, Linda (Ivan) Henderson and Shirley (the late David) Gardiner; brothers, Alonzo (the late Margie) Crane, Johnny (Doris) Crane and Ronald (Helen) Crane; grandchildren, Raymond Crane, Courtney Adams, Caitlin Crouse, Kayla Brace, Brittany Crane, Shaelynn Crane, Danielle Crane, Vanessa Crane, Evan Brace and five great-grandchildren. Antigonish, NS February 20, 2025 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Catherine MacDonald of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, at St. Martha’s Hospital on February 20, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Antigonish, Anna worked for many years at St. Francis Xavier University Aquatic Department and finished her career with the Opportunity Shop. Anna liked the simple things in life such as growing up on a farm with seven siblings, her morning coffee with a newspaper and doing the daily crossword. She enjoyed hiking and snowshoeing with her friends and so many walks on ‘The Landing’. Anna cherished her nieces and nephews, always remembering and celebrating every milestone. Her kind and loving nature was reflected in her generosity. Anna was the daughter of the late John William MacDonald and Lillian C. (MacLellan) MacDonald, Glencoe, Guysborough County, NS. She is survived by her sister Peggy Doiron (Raymond), Moncton, NB, three brothers, John (Rita), Toronto, ON, Lewis (Bonnie), Moncton, NB, and Vince, Guysborough, NS. Her niece, Lindsay Ralph (Chris), Stephenville, NL, her nephew Brandon Vooro, BC. Two grand nieces, Lillian and Brooklyn and grand nephew, Drew. Anna was predeceased by her parents, maternal grandparents Joe ‘The Hermit’ MacLellan and Margaret Ann MacDonald, paternal grandparents Matthias John MacDonald and Mary A. Whitney Pier, NS June 15, 1947 - February 15, 2025 It is with a heavy heart that we, the family of Carmel Marie MacKinnon announce her passing on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in Sydney. Born in Sydney on June 15, 1947, Carmel was the daughter of the late Carl and Lillian Neville. Carmel is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold; sons, Paul (Donna) and Scott (Laurie); beloved grandchildren, Ashley (Andrew), Alexander (Cassie), Andrea and Haley (Raymond); seven cherished great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Wilson, Brenda (Roddie) MacMillan, Ontario, and twin sister, Carol (Donald) McKay; sisters-in-law, Gail Johnson, Hay Cove and Anne Neville, Ontario; as well as several nieces and nephews, especially Glenn and Christine, with whom Carmel and Harold had a special bond for several years. Besides her parents, Carmel was predeceased by her brothers, John, James ‘Jackie’, Joseph, and Maurice; in-laws, Dan and Mary, Hay Cove, and brothers-in-law, Donnie and Michael. Carmel successfully operated Car-Mac Fuels in the Pier and enjoyed camping, knitting and crocheting. Her most enjoyment came from raising her family and she was over the moon when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along. Dartmouth, NS July 22, 1974 - February 10, 2025 With heavy hearts that we the family of Diane Marie Nicholson announce her sudden passing on February 10, 2025 in Sackville, NS. Diane was born on July 22, 1974 to the late Ralph Daniel Nicholson, Linda Doherty (John Dwyer).   Diane was the former partner of Weldon Andrew DeBaie.  She was a loving mother to Weldon Andrew Nicholson (Toronto) and daughter Summer-Lynn Nicholson (Lucien Baker) Porters Lake.  She was the sister to Margaret-Ann Pomeroy (Kevin Purdy) and Bonnie-Lynn Nicholson (Steven Scharien).  Loving aunt to Austin Daniel Pomeroy (Allison Leonard), Jaymie Lynn Pomeroy (Chandler Pratt), Christopher Foster, and Brittany Publicover. She was the beloved niece of Frank Nicholson (Shelley D Lumsden) James Nicholson, Nikki Marie Nicholson, Nicole Nicholson, the late Peter Nicholson (Nancy Nicholson) John Nicholson (Linda Nicholson), grandparents John Nicholson and Alvina Nicholson. Diane had many loving cousins  Diane worked at Honeywell and had a great impact on all she worked with. She also worked at Apotex prior to moving back to NS. Diane was the definition of love and kindness. She seen the beauty in a lot of people. She was always wanting to help people that needed help.  Diane loved life to the fullest and seen the good in wherever she went. She loved to have a good time and meet people. Diane was happy when she was scratching tickets, yelling BINGO and cuddling with her favourite fur babies Bear and Mama.  Diane’s loss will leave a large hole in many hearts.  We will have a gathering to pay respects at Dartmouth funeral home ( 29 Queen St.) Monday February 17th, 2025, 6:00pm-8:00pm.   A family graveside burial will be at a later date.  Donations can be made in memory of Diane to the local SPCA.   “When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure and she will live in all our hearts forever.”

Truro, NS February 14, 2025 Donald Edwin "Donnie" Boomer – 90, Truro, formerly of Brookfield, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, February 14, 2025, at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital, Pictou. Born in Brookfield, he was the son of the late Edwin and Violet (Tucker) Boomer. In earlier years, Donnie worked at Hallidays and then went to work at Crossley Carpet Factory until his retirement. Many will remember seeing him walking around town. He was a cherished brother and will be missed by his sisters. Donnie is survived by his sisters, Marjorie (Gerald) Matthews, Lower Truro; Lillian Corkum, Brookfield; Shirley Wallace, Bible Hill; many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Terry); sisters, Edna (Charlie) McNutt, Mary (Donnie) MacCallum, Margaret in infancy. North River Bridge, NS September 16, 1932 - February 10, 2025 The family of Kathryn Grace MacLeod "Grace" age 92, wish to announce her passing on Monday, February 10, at Victoria County Hospital. Born on September 16, 1932, she was the daughter of Mabel (Carmichael) and Neil MacDonald of North River Bridge, Victoria County. Grace attended Normal College in Truro, and began her teaching career in one-room schools in North River and later in French River. She served as teaching principal in North Shore Consolidated School until her retirement in 1990. She was an exceptional educator who is fondly remembered by former students, who mention the positive impact she had in their school experience. While teaching in French River, she married Roderick MacLeod (in 1959) and together they raised a family in Breton Cove. Grace was an active and faithful member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, North River, and in earlier years she served as an elder and organist at Calvin and William Reid Churches in North Shore. She was active in AMS, and in many church events. Grace is survived by her daughters Marilyn MacLeod, Baddeck, and Emily MacLeod, and her husband Terry Look, of Colville, New Zealand (and their granddaughter, Willow). Grace's most cherished role was that of Nannie, and recently Great Nannie to her grandchildren: Steven MacInnis, (Hammonds Plains), his wife Hailey, and their daughters Isla (5) and baby Ava Grace (5 months) and Kate MacInnis, Baddeck, and her son Rogan (4) Also surviving are sisters: Marcella Parks (the late Courtney), Eleanor Logan (Keith) and brothers Raymond (Donna) and Jack (Marlene) Sisters-in-law: Carl's wife, Shirley and Jess's wife, Ellie. Nieces: Tami, Sheri, Rachael, Lisa, and Nephews: Michael, Ian, Andrew, Jonathan and Timothy. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roderick in May 2000 and her son Robert (age 12) in May 1975. Brothers: Carl MacDonald and Jess MacDonald, Sisters-in-law: (the MacLeod sisters - Sadie,Tain, Peggy, Katha, Mae, and Grace. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the healthcare workers at Victoria County Hospital for the exceptional care Grace received, both in the fall, and during the last week. Our gratitude is also extended to her Home Support Team. Your visits and excellent care enhanced her quality of life during her last few months. To honour Grace's wishes a memorial service will be held in August when her New Zealand family can be with us. Memorial donations in honour of Grace may be made to either Victoria County Home Support Services or St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge.
