Kennetcook, NS July 19, 2024 Sharon Raymonde Barron – 73, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born in Kennetcook, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Almina "Miney" Ettinger Barron. Sharon was very proud to be a nurse. She loved to travel and went on many road trips with her husband, Kevin. She belonged to Colchester Heritage Rug Hookers and made many long lasting friendships. Sharon was very creative, loved gardening, cooking, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. Always a love for music, Sharon went to many concerts and even had a chance to see The Beatles. Sharon is survived by her husband, Kevin Lynds, Valley; children, Mark and Shannon Dalrymple, both of East Gore, Allana Dalrymple, Halifax; grandchildren, Erica and Chase; sisters, Helen Romans, Windsor, Evelyn Sutherland, Truro; brother Donnie Miller, Windsor; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Merlin, Murray and Christopher Barron. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at Glen Haven Manor for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Sharon and her family during her stay as well as the VON for allowing Sharon to stay at home as long as possible. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro where a service to celebrate and remember Sharon will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2024, Reverend April Hart officiating. A reception will follow. Webcasting of the service will be available starting at 10:55 am. Interment will be in Kennetcook Cemetery. - SCOTT MCKAY, Marjorie Carol
Dartmouth, NS December 6, 1933 - July 18, 2024 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Marjorie Carol Scott (nee McKay) on July 18th 2024 after a short time of ill health. Born in Whitney, New Brunswick on December 6th 1933. She is survived by her son Nigel Balfour and his wife Marianne. She is predeceased by her father Charles, mother Myrtle, brother Arnold (Buzzy), and niece Dawn. She is survived by her sister in law Gail Matchett, nephew Larry, nieces Carol Anne and Angela. Marjorie was not one to let things get in her way. When the rural school she attended closed she walked into the nearest town to continue her education eventually becoming an RN. After graduating she moved to Elliot Lake where she worked as a nurse. As per her wishes she has been cremated. Part of her ashes will be interred overlooking the Miramichi, She will be with family and next to her former family homestead. The remainder will be interred in Elliot Lake.

Historical Obituary New Glasgow, NS March 4, 1903 - July 24, 2001 Dr. Carrie Best, a trailblazing journalist, broadcaster, and civil rights advocate, made a profound impact on Nova Scotia and Canadian society through her tireless efforts for racial equality and social justice. Born on March 4, 1903, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Carrie Best's legacy continues to inspire generations. Carrie Best's commitment to justice began early in life. In 1946, she and her son Cal were arrested for sitting in the "whites-only" section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. This act of defiance highlighted the systemic racism prevalent in Nova Scotia and galvanized her lifelong fight for equality. In the same year, Dr. Best founded The Clarion , the first Black-owned and published newspaper in Nova Scotia. Through The Clarion , she provided a powerful platform for Black Nova Scotians to voice their struggles and successes. Her fearless reporting and editorials challenged discrimination and promoted civil rights, making significant strides in raising awareness and advocating for change. Dr. Best's influence extended to radio, where she hosted The Quiet Corner on CBC, addressing social issues and providing a voice for marginalized communities. She also founded the Kay Livingstone Visible Minority Women’s Society, advocating for the rights of women and minorities. Throughout her life, Dr. Carrie Best received numerous accolades for her contributions, including the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia. Her autobiography, That Lonesome Road , chronicles her life's journey and the relentless pursuit of justice. In 1975, she became a Member of the Order of Canada, recognizing her significant contributions to Canadian society. Dr. Carrie Best passed away on July 24, 2001, but her legacy lives on. She is remembered as a pioneering force in journalism and civil rights, whose work has left an indelible mark on Nova Scotia and Canada. Her commitment to equality and justice continues to inspire and guide the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice. Digby / Central Grove, NS August 22, 1937 - July 18, 2024 PRIME (Boliver), Marjorie May ~ age 86 (August 22, 1937 – July 18, 2024) of Digby, formerly Central Grove, NS passed away peacefully in Tideview Terrace, Digby, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Little River, NS, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Claribel (Meisner) Boliver. Marjorie loved being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She devoted her life to raising her family and was proud of all of their accomplishments. Marjorie was a very caring and thoughtful person and always gave the best hugs. She was an excellent cook and loved watching others enjoy her food. In later years, Marjorie enjoyed playing SkipBo and Bingo, she also enjoyed singing along and listening to country music with her Tideview family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Dartmouth, NS June 14, 1963 - July 17, 2024 Pace, Kevin Kenneth - 61 of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024 surrounded by family. Our sadness is mixed with relief that he is now resting in peace. Born June 14th, 1963 in Sheet Harbour he was the son of Kenneth Pace and the late Marguerite Lewis. Remembered by loved ones and friends as a hardworking man who loved the outdoors and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed one. Survived by his loving partner Doris, and Doris's daughter Amanda, son in law Sven and granddaughter Courtney. He was predeceased by his sister Kathy and Nephew Billy A special thank you to our family and friends that visited Kevin at our home and in the hospital. I would like to thank my brother Leonard for the support he gave me and Kevin this past year. Thank you to the nurses and staff at Dartmouth General Palliative Care for the kindness and care they showed Kevin. Cremation has taken place and following Kevin's wishes there will not be a service or visitation. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.

Whitney Pier, NS January 23, 1949 - July 20, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Wilhelmina “Sookie” LeBlanc at the Glace Bay Hospital July 20, 2024 following a courageous battle with a long illness. Sookie grew up in Whitney Pier and took great pride in proclaiming herself as being "From the Pier, Dear," cherishing the lifelong friendships and family ties that came with it. She was the eldest daughter of Walter George “Dick” and Anna Vera (Sinclair) Nichols. Sookie is survived by her husband, Dave, as well as her children: Natasha (David), David (Nicole), Christopher, Adam, and Meghan (Dan). She is also survived by grandchildren: Abigail, Brady, and Sarah Hackett; Mya and Caleb LeBlanc; and Ava and Zoe LeBlanc. Sookie is also survived by sisters Priscella “Cella”, Margaret “Sister” (Paul), Barbara (Stewart), and Carmie (Duncan) and brother Nicky (Anna), as well as brothers-in-law Eugene and Dennis LeBlanc, and sisters-in-law Valerie and Donna LeBlanc. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Vera Nichols, as well as her brother, Walter Nichols, and brothers-in-law James and Russell LeBlanc, Jim Duffy, and Jack Smith. In her younger years, Sookie forged many friendships while working at Cruickshank’s Drug Store, Woolco, Walmart, and the Cream Putt, before dedicating herself to Harbourstone Extended Care, where she found great fulfillment. Sookie had a passion for dart playing and excelled, proudly achieving the Gold Medal in her age group at the Canada 55+ Games. Sookie was the founding President of the Howie Center Volunteer Fire Department Ladies’ auxiliary where she was responsible for starting their Tree of Life campaign. Sookie loved her family, darts, her games of Scrabble, crib, and bingo, Christmas, Hallmark movies, and a good rum and Coke on the back deck. We give special thanks to her caregivers at Taigh Na Mara Care Home and the Glace Bay Hospital. Sookie imparted this final piece of advice: "My hope is that each of you enjoy your families and friends, stay close to one another, laugh often, and don’t take life too seriously. Until we all are together again, remember me and how much I loved you all.” Interment in Alfred E. Smith Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

New Glasgow, NS October 28, 1959 - July 17, 2024 Julie Ann Fulton, 64, Egerton, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow. Born on October 28, 1959, in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lawson and Marion Lorraine (MacDonald) Fulton. Surviving are her partner of 20 years, Gerald Battist; children, Cameron, Michael (London), Gregory (Krista), Natalie and Lawson MacLane; grandchildren, Jade St. Pierre, Stella, Findlay and Eva MacLane; sister, Karen Fulton; brother, Rob (Nancy) Fulton; nephew and niece, Derek (Alison) and Alyson (Dave); aunts, Adelaide MacDonald and Betty Fulton; many cousins. Julie was raised in Halifax, where she attended Halifax West Hight School, graduating in 1978. She completed her BBA in Marketing at Acadia University (1982). Julie was the controller for Gerald Battist Trucking Limited, Truro Reload & Storage Limited and Straightline Stevedoring Limited as well as many other corporations over the years. Her lifelong passion being horses, she founded Scotia Sport Horses, MacLane Quarter Horses, Fulton Performance Horses and Maxwelton Ranch. Julie was a breeder of Eventing, Hunter and Jumper horses, and had a natural gift for training and caring for her herd. She was previously a director of the Canadian Warm Blood Association, served on the board of the American Quarter Horse Association and was actively involved in the former Pictou County Light Horse Club. Julie was a member of the Crossroads Breakfast Club and revelled in the many conversations of the “senate”. Taking after her mother, Julie appreciated fashion and was always smartly dressed, greatly enjoying watching the fashions displayed during the Kentucky Derby and Spruce Meadows events. Besides horses, Julie was passionate about downhill skiing and was a member of the ski patrol during her university years. She enjoyed researching holistic medicine and applied the information she gathered to her everyday life. While in high school, she played the baritone saxophone in a popular jazz band, which was invited to play at the Canadian National Exhibition. Julie had a “can-do” attitude, willing to tackle any challenge, never afraid to take a risk. She possessed a wonderful sense of humour and could brighten a room with a flash of her warm smile. A determined, passionate and intelligent lady, who loved to entertain friends and family, Julie will be sorely missed by all who knew her and loved her. - ORDE, Denton Eugene
New Minas, NS January 20, 1927 - July 17, 2024 Sadly, we announce the passing of Denton Eugene Orde of New Minas in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, Nova Scotia on July 17, 2024. Denton was born in Maitland Bridge on January 20, 1927, the son of Percy Austin Orde and Myrtle Harding Rawding. He went to work at C.F.B. Cornwallis in 1943 until 1944 as a carpenter. He returned to Maitland Bridge after his parents lost their home to fire, helping them re-establish a farm in Kempt. In 1950 he married Jeannette Chute, daughter of Bernard and Lois (MacLean) Chute of Caledonia, Queens County. Together they farmed and he worked in the woods until 1954 when he went to work with Nova Scotia Power Commission at Harmony Hydro-electric station. He accepted a transfer to Bear River/Sissiboo Developments in 1957. While in Bear River, he upgraded his education through ICS correspondence courses in electrical and electronic fields. In 1975 he went to the Black River system near Wolfville, as Superintendent of the "Valley Hydro System". He continued to work in this area until his retirement in 1987, when they moved to New Minas. During his retirement he pursued numerous personal interests including the Kings Historical Society and became involved in Genealogy. As his interest in this grew, he spent many days and evenings pursuing information and compiling his findings as two self-published books on the Orde (1997) and Rawding (2000) families in Nova Scotia. He spent hours in his workshop repairing and restoring many chairs, rocking chairs, tables, building bookcases and other projects which were shared with family members. He was involved in amateur radio during the early 60's and 70's, learning Morse code and building his own ham radio. As VE1AKI he made friends locally and had contacts all over the world. Denton was a man of faith accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour early in life through the preaching and teaching of the Shantymen's Mission. He was baptized and grew in faith providing leadership in churches over many years. He served as Deacon in Bear River and New Minas Baptist Churches and was actively involved in the building of the new church and later expansion projects. He was a lifetime member of Gideons International, now known as Shareword Global. He started with this organization in the late 1950's after answering an ad in the Freepress Weekly to be provided with copies of the New Testament to hand out in schools. Out of this grew his steadfast support working to provide copies of the Bible in many areas, including grade 5 school children, hotels, hospitals and prisons, both locally and around the world. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Jeannette, and their children, Burdette (Garnet) Uhlman, Berwick, NS; granddaughter, Andrea Robbins-Trimper, (great grandchildren, Carey and Abigail) Lower Sackville, NS; daughter, Shirley (David) Dugas, Bear River, NS; granddaughter, Sarah Marshall (great grandsons, Owen and Evan) Sunken Lake, NS; granddaughter, Katherine (Dave) Trenholm (great grandson Benjamin) Coldbrook, NS; granddaughter, Emily (Matt Symes) (great granddaughters, Ellington and Audrey) Moncton, NB; son, Kevin (Cheryl Bain) Digby, NS; granddaughter, Sharayah (Riley Gamble) Killaly, SK. Survived by his brother, Eric Orde, Granville Ferry, NS; and predeceased by his sister, Leona (Lawrence) Ford and brothers, Gerald and Myrna (McKinnon) Orde of Vancouver, BC; Harry and Hannah (Cunningham) Orde of Maitland Bridge, NS; sister-in-law, Joan (Scott) Orde as well as nieces and nephews and much-loved son-in-law, Donald Robbins. The family have greatly appreciated the care provided by Dykeland staff who went out of their way to enrich his stay and make him feel content and cared for. The funeral service will be held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 11 a.m., Rev. Wayne Merrill will officiate with a reception to follow. For those unable to attend, a livestream of the service will be available. A private family interment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River at 3 o'clock the same day. - YOUNG, Thomas Martin (Tommy)
Albert Bridge, NS June 13, 1952 - July 15, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the sudden passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Thomas ‘Tommy’ Martin Young. Born on June 13, 1952, in Sydney, Tommy was a son of Thomas Gerald and Vera Joanne (Evely) Young. Tommy prided himself on his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Marie (MacNeil) Young; son, Steven (Bethany) Young; daughter, Laura (Anthony Bradley) Young; his pride and joy, grandchildren, Brendan and Emma; mother, Vera; sister, Donna (Leonard) Binns, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tommy was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gerald Young, and in-laws, John and Annie MacNeil. Tommy was a dog-loving, friendly and social person, well-liked by those fortunate enough to know him. Famous for his Spaghetti and Meatballs, Tommy was always helping various sports organizations with fundraising. His love for cooking and kitchen savvy ways will live on through his daughter, Laura. As a long-time member of the Sydney Curling Club, together with many close friends, Tommy helped organize events and ensured people enjoyed delicious food. When not in the kitchen, Tommy could be found hunting, fishing, golfing, curling, bowling, playing baseball, hockey, horseshoes, washer toss or simply enjoying a beer with friends and family. Of all the things he did, his most favourite times recently were watching Brendan and Emma play baseball, hockey, or simply enjoying a game of golf with them. A hard-working man, in his earlier years, Tommy worked at a clothing factory in Toronto. He then moved back to Cape Breton and worked as a lobster fisherman followed by working at the pier rink. He then moved to Canada Post where he worked as a letter carrier for 30 years and made many long-time friends before retiring. In true Tommy style, one to not sit around, retirement didn’t last long. Together with his son, Steven, they embarked on the journey of business ownership, and purchased the French Club in Sydney. Amongst all the above he found time to start catering, where his daughter, Laura, then joined him after finding her passion for cooking. Tommy will be truly missed by all who knew him. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Thomas Young will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Jane Keller officiating. Private family interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Donations in memory of Tommy may be made to the SPCA, Cape Breton Chapter. Sydney, NS July 15, 1931 - July 18, 2024 It is with great sadness, the family; announce the passing of Cyril MacLean, our husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend on July 18, 2024 at The Cove Guest Home at the age of 93. Born in Whitney Pier on July 15, 1931, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was the eldest son of the late Elmer + Mary Jane (MacSween) MacLean. Cyril was a resident of Edwardsville for over 60 years and was a member of The Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount. Cyril loved all things to do with the water, whether taking day trips on the Newfoundland ferry or building and sailing the many dorys he built in his garage. He worked many years at The Helm Tavern in Sydney and then on to The Peridot and Ziggy’s where he made many long lasting friends, he never went anywhere without running into someone he knew. After his retirement, his greatest hobby was his upholstery work, stained glass art and building dorys in the garage with the wood stove on. He spent many years volunteering at CBRH weekly. In younger years, family vacations were spent camping around the Maritimes. Not being a traveler, he spent his time with family at home. Survived by his devoted wife, Mildred (Grant), his four children, Connie (Catherine), Terry, Doug (Sheryl) and Susan (Mike) and his two grandchildren of whom he was so proud in all their accomplishments, Christina and Michael, sisters in law, Katherine and Betty Grant and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both his parents, his younger brother, Adrian “Red” (Rose Marie) and sister, Patricia. Big thank you to the kind and caring staff of The Orchard Unit and the kitchen staff of the Cove Guest home where he felt as close to home as he could. Sincere thank you to Dr. Greg Myatt, Nurse Janice and staff for their many years of faithful care. Also, thank you to the staff of the Sydney River Superstore Pharmacy. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be held Monday July 22, 2024 in Sydney Memorial Chapel at 11 am, with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. Dartmouth, NS August 25, 1933 - July 10, 2024 Born to George and Dorothy (Rudland) Horne in Saint John, NB on August 25, 1933, he was the second child of 8. He passed away Wednesday July 10, 2024, leaving behind the love of his life, Winnie (Connors) and his family, Darlene and Rob (Laura and Mike; Amy; and Kate and Chris); Steve; and Ron and Kelly. Predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert, Donald, Alex and Pat and granddaughter Rebecca. Survived by siblings Tom, Carl and Joy and many nieces and nephews. He loved spending time with his family, cooking, bread making, going for drives and passing along his knowledge and love of nature and fishing. There wasn’t a craft he wouldn’t try and ultimately excel at (a trait that skipped his daughter but did get passed to Ron and his granddaughters) like gardening, woodworking, painting, carving and stained glass. Dad was a gentle man who believed everyone deserved to be treated with respect. He worked hard all his life to provide for his family. He held many odd jobs throughout the years but was most proud of his last employer, Imperial Oil. The family appreciates the sympathy and love that has been shared. A private family celebration of life will take place at a later date. “May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so that you can hear that I still love you and miss you and wish that you were here. Newport Station, NS June 29, 1961 - July 14, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Steven, age 63, of Newport Station, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, while doing what he has loved most as a pastime, riding his motorcycle, in Franey Corner, Lunenburg Co. Born on June 29, 1961 in Berwick, he was a son of Hubert and the late Mary “Eleanor” (Webster) Benjamin (who predeceased him just nine months ago). Steven lived on the North Mountain in Burlington, Kings Co. all of his childhood and loved telling the story of having to walk up and down the mountain to catch the bus and get home from school, so that he could get his education. From a very young age, Steven developed a love of dirt bikes which continued through his life later turning into a love of motorcycles. He was a very passionate and experienced rider and became a member of the Red Knights motorcycle club and was affectionately known to some members as “Sweet Cheeks” or “Old Faithful”. He took welding at NSCC Kingstec and went to work as a welder in Trenton following graduation. He then went to Ontario and Newfoundland, back to Nova Scotia where he managed numerous different stores. He worked at Parsons Motors selling cars before becoming an emergency dispatcher for the Town of Windsor. He then went on to be custodian of the Windsor Town Office and Fire Department building, from which he retired just four short years ago. Steven was a very proud member of the Windsor Fire Department and served as an active member for 25 years before moving over to the Veteran’s Association which he still served as a current member of. He was a jack of all trades and had no problems trying to tackle anything that came his way. He was also the kind of guy who would drop anything he was doing to go and help out family and friends. Steven loved to spend time bass fishing with his best friend, Jimmy Macumber. Besides his motorcycle, he also loved his pup dogs, gardening, spending time driving his tractor and especially spending time with his family and with Grace, whom he shared a special relationship with for the last 32 years. Besides his father, Hubert, Steven will be deeply missed by his soulmate and partner, Grace Wile; son, Harden (Donna) Wile; daughters, Dorothy Weisner and Avalena Weisner (Dennis Manlow); grandchildren, Claire and Chloe Wile, Jesse McCarthy and Albert Deal; beloved pup dogs, Bitzy and Mitzy; brothers, Timothy (Theresa), Jeffery (Tracey) and David; sister, Tina (Ricky) Davidson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
