Salmon River, NS June 5, 2024 Janet Louise Snow - 76, Salmon River. Sadly, we announce that Janet Louise Snow passed away after a series of heart attacks on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. She is sorrowfully missed by loving family Ken, Jamie, Margaret and Ashley. Born in Montreal, she was a daughter of the late James and Isobel (Thornton) Forbes. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ken; son, Jamie, Burlington, Ontario; sister, Margaret, Toronto, Ontario; daughter-in-law, Ashley, Burlington, Ontario. Janet was raised in Longueuil, Quebec and enjoyed a happy family life with her sister, Margaret. Janet was a long-time member of the Girl Guides of Canada where she developed her love for the outdoors. She and her family were active members in the Anglican Church in Longueuil where they all sang in the choir. Janet had fond memories of singing Christmas carols as a soprano along with Louise, her mother; Margaret sang alto, and father sang bass. Summers were often spent in the Rideau lakes area where Janet learned to swim and eventually, she obtained the bronze medallion for swimming and lifesaving leading to many part time jobs as a lifeguard. She taught Jamie how to swim and was helpful in giving her husband a few swimming pointers as well. For many years Ken, Janet and Jamie and our dog and two cats travelled to the cottage in the Laurentians where swimming, relaxing, campfires and the odd sip of wine were the order of the day. Janet graduated from high school and secretarial school. She worked for London Life Insurance Company for 12 years. Janet and Ken met through the Scouting and Guiding movements in the late 60s but didn’t marry until December 26, 1976. They lived together in Fredericton New Brunswick, while Ken attended UNB. Janet worked in the administrative offices at UNB and Ken attended classes. She obtained a PHT diploma (Putting Hubby Through). Janet and Ken moved to Truro in December 1977 and have lived here since. Janet always loved to sing and dance and participated in several musicals in the Montreal and Truro areas. Janet became a loving mother and homemaker in Truro, supporting Jamie and Ken as they all journeyed through life. One of Janet’s fondest memories was the wedding of Jamie and Ashley in Burlington, Ontario in 2017. She was very active at St. Andrews United Church in Truro, where she was a member of the choir, taught Sunday school and was active with the United Church Women Group.. Janet was a community volunteer for many years. She volunteered as a leader with the Girl Guides of Canada. She received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal for her work with the Colchester County Block Parent program. Janet also volunteered with The Colchester Hospital Auxiliary coffee shop. She was a long-time member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority group. She participated in their daffodil campaign for 10 years, raising funds for cancer. Janet liked to travel and enjoyed many cruises to the Caribbean with family and friends. She also worked as a part time court reporter in Truro. Janet was very proud of her son Jamie and his accomplishment in his flying career. We will miss Janet but will always remember her gentle and loving nature and her ability to bounce back from adversity with a smile. Janet lived a life helping others, and hers was a life well lived. The family would like to thank the staff in the dialysis department of the Truro hospital for the loving care they provided to Janet during the last nine years. - YOUNIS, Linda Eleanor
Mahone Bay, NS October 11, 1943 - June 6, 2024 Linda Eleanor Younis , age 80, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024. Mom was born on October 11, 1943 in Maplewood, Lunenburg County to parents Susie and Harold Dauphinee. Her birthday generally fell on or near Thanksgiving. The story was told how the doctor came to deliver her while Susie had a turkey cooking in the oven. Mom grew up in Cornwall, Lunenburg County along with brothers Dale and Collins. She was a good student and even had her mother as a teacher in the days of the one room school house. She had beautiful penmanship, an important skill she was raised with. She wrote many wonderful letters and sent cards to friends and family to celebrate special occasions. She was known for her birthday calendar beside the phone which she referred to daily to make calls filled with love and best wishes. Mom had a gift of making everyone feel welcome and special. She loved to make your favorite dish or dessert and entertain guests with music either played by she and Allie or from their extensive collection. Allie was the love of her life. They were sweethearts reunited and married on December 19, 1980. They were inseparable partners who could finish each other’s sentences. They had the kind of love songs are written about. Linda was the ultimate nurturer. She helped out and cared for many elderly relatives including her parents. Her mother Susie lived with she and Allie for many years after her father Harold’s passing. Devoted mother to Stephanie (Bob Chipman ) and Stephen (Anell). Beloved Nannie to Haley (Brent MacAdam) Emma and Charlotte. Treasured Nan-Nan to Stella and Lucia. Mom always glowed with a child in her lap. She loved animals big and small. From her bird feeders to pet dogs and cats. There were great tales of she and cousin Janet sneaking off with her father’s or Uncle Ralph’s work horses and interrupting farm work for their adventures on horseback. Mom was brave and beautiful. When I was a child she seemed larger than life at times. A blend of Marilyn Munroe meets Annie Oakley. Dressed like a princess one minute, the next shooting a barnyard pest without blinking an eye. She had many creative talents including knitting, crocheting and quilting and sewing. She worked as a seamstress for Suttles & Seawinds for a time. Also as a telephone operator with MT&T. Her collection of beautiful quilts are a family treasure. Mom was predeceased by parents Susie and Harold, brothers Dale and Collins and husband of 43 years Allie. No visitation by request. A private family graveside service to be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Maggie Lovett, her geriatric specialist who helped us navigate the heartbreaking disease of Lewy Body Dementia. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, P.O. Box 200, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay, NS B0J 2E0 (902-624-8241). - POIRIER, Michel Joseph Raymond Paul
Lantz, NS January 31, 1944 - May 16, 2024 It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce our beloved father Mike passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at his home in Lantz, Nova Scotia on May 16, 2024 at the age of 80. Mike endured several health challenges during the last year and even in the face of adversity, he remained resilient, optimistic and formidably brave. He embodied kindness, compassion and had a very generous heart; leaving an unforgettable mark on the lives of everyone he touched. Mike was born in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, the middle son of Rodrigue and Cécile Poirier. Exceptionally smart, he attended a private school and studied at Séminaire Sainte-Marie. After graduation, he pursued studies in Engineering at Laval University in Quebec City, but ultimately he listened to his heart (and his brother Mark's advice), and decided to follow his aspiration to become a Pilot, so he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. One little hitch, at one point, he realized what goes up, must come down, and landing a plane was a little harder than anticipated, so he became an admirable Navigator and rose to the highly regarded rank of Captain J. R. Poirier. In 1988 he retired and returned to school to study at Acadia University, receiving a degree in Computer Science. Mike went on to work for the Department of National Defence, Government of Canada, eventually leaving his days in his office for sunny days on the golf course, retiring in 2020. When he was not practicing his golf swing, he found the simple things in life meaningful, be it watching tennis and hockey with his devoted partner Terri (Go Montreal Canadiens!), or adventures in travelling with people he loved. He had a keen interest in science, finding quantum physics, astrophysics and astronomy most fascinating. He had accrued a homemade wine collection and loved a good glass of Cabernet Sauvignon with a home cooked meal. Mike was an excellent hobby photographer, as memories were often captured during his cherished past time; morning walks on the Marsh Trail with his beloved dog "Pepper" He will be dearly missed and remembered as a loving father, step father, affectionate partner and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife Michèle (Mimi); Poirier and his loving partner Theresa (Terri) Caillé, his two daughters, Nathalie and Marie-Ève of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, his brothers Mark (Lucie) of Quebec City and Joël (Monique) of Montreal, Quebec. Our family is very appreciative and grateful to everyone who has expressed their support and provided comfort to us during this very difficult time. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care Team of East Hants, Nova Scotia, including the compassionate help of Laura, Georgina and Donna, as without this amazing family, we would not have been able to care for him at home. A service will be held at the Dartmouth Funeral Home at 29 Queen St. on Monday, May 27 at 11:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Colchester County and Municipality of East Hants Palliative Care, or to a Charity of your choice.
