- McCuish, Georgeina Louise (Geordie)
Pictou, NS July 1st, 1943- April 20th, 2024 The Butterfly McCuish, Georgeina Louise (Geordie) July 1st, 1943- April 20th, 2024 Last night, Mom, Nanny, Mama Cuish, completed her metamorphosis. Not peacefully, but fighting like hell. After her life on earth as a caterpillar, she fiercely departed her chrysalis. She was beautiful. Her heart was full of her grandchildren’s love and her colours couldn’t be contained in the rainbow. And for the very first time, she did what butterflies do. She spread her wings. And flew. Geordie was born on July 1st, 1943. Canada Day. She loved sharing her Birthday with Canada. She was born in Ontario, and had several siblings. She was a proud and loving mother to Elizabeth MacCuish, John (Lucy) MacCuish, Susan (Shane) MacNeil, and Cindy MacCuish. Nanny to Lorna, Leanna, Jack, Matthew, Candice, Chelsea, Megan, Amie and Nicholas. GiGi to Fourteen Great Grandchildren and Six Great Great Grandchildren. Her worst days were best when her Great Grand babies entered the room. She lit up like a firefly, with a smile from ear to ear. Fierce and loyal fan of the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots. Wore all their gear and funny little hats, slept with their little blankets and pillowcases. She loved to banter back and forth with fans of other, lesser, sports teams. In her younger years, Geordie worked in Ontario at the local hospital, helping people. For about a decade she lived in Northport, Florida, and worked at Lemon Bay Drugs and at one point managed the kitchen at a nearby golf course. She loved to golf. Geordie raised her children on a hill, in Sunnybrae. God’s Country. She opened her own small business, Hillsview Kennel, where she continued her lifelong love with animals. The kennel was very busy yet often empty. The dogs were mostly found running around in her house and often sleeping with her in her bed. She loved life on her little farm, summer trips to Newfoundland, travelling to dog shows, and harness racing in Sackville. Geordie was predeceased by her parents and beautiful daughter, Cindy. Geordie spent her last several years at Valleyview Villa, in Riverton, Pictou County. She took special pride in welcoming new residents and making them feel at home. We are so grateful for the Love and Care she received there. Thank you. As her very last gift, wanting to give, wanting to help, wanting a better future for her children and grandchildren, Geordie donated her remains to the Dalhousie University Human Body Donation Program, for research. There will be no visitation. Private family service to follow. Donations in her memory may be made to the Pictou County SPCA. It’s hard to catch a Butterfly. But if you stand still, they’ll often land on your shoulder. So slow down, breathe, and smell the flowers. She’ll be there, fluttering. And, by the way, the Bruins won. 🦋

Betty, Betsy, as her brother Jim affectionately called her, was a pillar in her community. In addition to her being a foster parent, Betty started her volunteerism in the mid 1980’s by becoming a member of the Aylesford and District Lioness Club. For 34 years she was the face of the Children's Wish Foundation and during that time she was involved in granting 90 wishes, organizing 600 events and raising well over $500,000 to grant wishes to children. Betty never stopped thinking of others and right up until her last moments, our dear Betty, was still organizing a fundraiser for the local food bank. She affectionately involved her sons, and daughters-in-law and gave us all orders to ensure everything goes smoothly and told us to make sure we say "thank you" to all who donated generously of their time, gifts and funds. In Betty’s own words she states: "I do what I do because I love it. I’ll keep doing all I can until I can’t do it anymore." Betty loved her family and to say she will be missed is truly an understatement. We will miss her constant presence at her favorite table at the family diner. She has touched so many lives. I am sure many, many of you have a story about how Betty touched your own lives and we, her family, look forward to hearing them at her celebration of life. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by many aunts and uncles. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. - MACLEAN LARAMÉE, Paula Marie
Long Point, NS April 2, 1954 - April 13, 2024 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Paula Marie MacLean (nee LaRamée). She left us suddenly, yet peacefully, at home in her sleep on April 13th, 2024. Paula was the daughter of the late Guy and the late Anne Margaret LaRamée. She was born in Toronto in 1954 but spent the majority of her upbringing in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Inspired by her father’s service in the Canadian Air Force and Navy, from a young age, Paula had an adventurous spark and a life-long love of travel. Paula met the love of her life, Frank, while spending summers in Creignish, Cape Breton with her parents and her six siblings Marie-Anne (Ivan) Toronto, the late Inez, Celeste (Bill) Florida, the late Stephen, Nicole (Henrik) Dartmouth and Leone (Ken) Dartmouth. Her summers were also filled with time spent with the MacMaster family and her extended “Sheumais” family on Creignish Rear. After graduating from Dartmouth High School, she began to follow her passion for photography, working alongside Sherman Hines as an assistant. After studying for her LPN she graduated in 1974. Later on, she began drafting at CRVS (Nautical Institute) in Port Hawkesbury. Yet she never gave up her passion for photography, drafting, drawing, cooking and gardening. When Paula and Frank decided to settle in Long Point, Cape Breton at the “old farm house”, they got married on December 14, 1974. Together they created a loving and nurturing home where they raised their five children: Kelly (Raúl), Port Hawkesbury; Cheryl (Adrian),Toronto; Garrett (Sable), Toronto; Kirk (Lynsee), Long Point; and Keane, Long Point. In addition to her husband and five children, she is survived by six grandchildren: Ronan, Fiona, Cosima, Cadence, Alistair and Elsie. Paula was a mother extraordinaire; always ready to lend support or find anything you need somewhere in her purse. She was in fact a mother and grandmother to many, for she was always ready and willing to offer motherly advice to anyone, including her children’s friends, her nieces and nephews, her extended family and even total strangers! And she was not afraid of engaging in deep conversations with strangers in passing. Paula extended herself to all in her role as a wife, sister, mother, grandmother, sister in-law, aunt, cousin, neighbour or friend. She cared deeply for her nieces and nephews through marriage, always remembering to acknowledge birthdays and special occasions for (Lindsay, Adele, Michelle, Natalie, Mark, Marisa, Sasha, Jarrett, Beth, Eric, Ashley, Kevin, and Samuel). Paula had a zest for life and adventure, and was always up for a good time. She rarely missed a good party. Indeed, she loved inviting people over to the old farm house just so she could practice her amazing hospitality skills. Tea and home-baked goodies were soon on the table for anyone who walked into her kitchen. She dearly loved all her nieces (Shanda, Jennifer, Adrienne, Julia and Andrea) and nephews (Nicholas, Brendan, Logan, Cameron and Adam); sister- in-laws HelenAnn (Gordon) Long Point; the late Yvonne (Richard) Long Point; Kathleen of Long Point; Marie (Dave) Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont; Sarah (Jere) Whitecourt; and brother- in- laws Hugh, St. Paul, MN; Winston, Chillawack, BC; Richard, Long Point; Gerry, Calgary; and Stanley (Jessica) Daegu, S. Korea. In remembering her, we appreciate Paula’s favourite refrain of The Beatles,"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da….Life Goes On.” Visitation to take place at Green’s Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury, NS on Thursday, April 18th 7-9pm; Friday, April 19th 2-4pm & 7-9pm. Funeral will be held at Judique Parish Saturday, April 20th at 11:00am. Burial to take place at a later date. Family flowers only please. Donations can be made to the Judique Parish Cemetery fund or charity of choice.
- BAIRD, Marjorie Ellen
Halifax, NS September 20, 1953 - April 6, 2024 In loving memory and with saddened hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Marjorie Ellen (Gee) Baird, affectionately known by friends and family as “Meg” on April 6, 2024. Born in Kentville, NS to Helen (Silver) and George Gee. She is survived by David Baird, her daughter Heather Baird-Moodley, her son Trevor Baird, her grandchildren Liam, Eva, and Piper Moodley, Aria, Skye, and Jasper Baird, and brothers Bob, George, and Wayne Gee. Although her passing from the physical to the eternal happened much too soon, we take comfort in knowing that she is now in the peaceful and loving arms of God and the company of her beloved mother, Helen “Nanny” Gee. Meg’s legacy is that of a youthful and imaginative free spirit who walked a delicate line between a pragmatic, down-to-earth perspective on life and that of a poetic genius. She enjoyed the company of her close friends, loved and held her family in profound affection, and treasured her free time spent writing poetry and practicing yoga. Engaged by intellect and conversation, she seldom found herself at a loss for words. She had a certain eloquence about her and a mesmerizing effect on others as she effortlessly danced through conversations and discussions with poise and finesse. In her creative genius, she enjoyed performing her poetry in cafes, libraries, bars, and special events. Her writing can be found in the Ezine Archives of Yellow Mama, Twisted Sister, Anemone Sidecar, Open Heart Forgery, Apollo’s Lyre, and Prachya Review, as well as the paper publications Fluidity, CV2: Poetry Only, Expressions, and Fourth Floor Images. She exemplified discipline and dedication in her professional endeavors, navigating a varied career path that encompassed both corporate and non-profit organizations. She found particular fulfillment in the roles held at the Acadia University Art Gallery in Wolfville, NS, and the Nova Scotia Choral Federation in Halifax, NS. Her passion and commitment to supporting and contributing to the arts and community enrichment opportunities left an enduring footprint in the cultural landscape. After her children were grown and starting families of their own, she retired from the Nova Scotia Choral Federation and set out on a new chapter to pursue certification as a care assistant, and later dedicated herself to the well-being of the elderly residents at the Northwood Retirement Home in Halifax, NS. Her compassion for those under her care was unwavering but she soon realized the stark realities of the healthcare system. Drawing upon her innate nurturing instincts and love of children, she left the system behind and set her sights on a new life out west. For the next five years, she embraced the role of caring for her young grandchildren and became an adored and treasured member of the Alberta Baird clan and extended family. She proudly claimed and cherished the rights and responsibilities of being Nanny and made lasting memories of love, laughter, and adventure with her family there. She also used the time she spent with her grandchildren to instill in them an awareness of the hidden treasures waiting to be found in reading, learning, and exploring the natural world around them. Eventually returning to Halifax, NS, in 2022, she became busy with plans to open a small early childhood education center in her home. Although she was not able to finish writing this chapter before illness set in, the groundwork had been done. The second floor of her house in Halifax is host to small desks and tiny chairs, books, games, markers, and the like. She was a determined woman working on a plan. She loved to spend time at the beach and was an excellent cook and baker of yummy treats. She herself loved bread and French fries, but never had to worry about gaining a pound! Elephants and sea turtles were among her favourite creatures, next in line to her love for domestic cats. She dabbled in amateur photography in her younger years and remained an excellent snapshot photographer with a keen eye for beauty and composition. We hold these photo memories she created as treasured reminders of the beauty she saw in us and the world around her. Meg was a generous and loving spirit who loved life. In her passing, we turn our attention to the memories and stories we have of the times we spent enjoying life right along with her. We remain grateful for the gift of her love, the ongoing presence of her spirit in our lives, and for the gifts she gave of herself in her passing in the hope that she might extend the life of someone else. Instead of flowers or cards, please consider making a small donation in memory Meg to the Canadian Children’s Literacy Foundation. www.childrensliteracy.ca A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. The details of her celebration will be shared once her children and grandchildren have had time to coordinate their travel to Nova Scotia.
