Queensport, NS January 14, 2024 Kenneth George "Ken" Fitzgerald – 67 – Queensport, passed away Sunday January 14th, 2024, at Guysborough Memorial Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late James and Helen (LLoy) Fitzgerald. Ken is survived by his partner of over 40 years, Charles "Chuck" Tovey.  He and Chuck shared many years together in Queensport where they enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, and volunteering in the preparation of community dinners to support the local Catholic parish.  Ken and Chuck’s chihuahuas Duke and Dutchess and dachshunds Gertrude and Gunther were very special to both of them. Before moving to Queensport, Ken worked in both the insurance and hardware fields. Besides Chuck, he is survived by his brother James (Julia), Bridgewater, Keith, Antrim; sister Sharon (Azur) Smajlovic, Halifax; and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters-in-law Pauline (James’ former wife) and Shirley (Keith’s former wife). Morden, NS January 17, 2024 It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of our mother Sally Marie Janes (91, of Morden, NS). Our mother passed away peacefully with her family by her side, January 17, 2024. Marie, by the wings of an angel has been lifted up to dwell within the presence of our Lord in Heaven. Marie is predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Roy Elwin Janes, parents, Michael Murphy, and Rita (Hall) Murphy, brother John (Carmel), and sisters Eileen (Michael Cleary), and Paula (Frank Buck). Marie is survived by her five children Michael (Mary Ann), Edmonton AB, Paula (Mark Woodland), Kingston NS, Rick (Donna), Beaverbank NS, Chris (Cathy), Kingston NS and John (Teresa), Morden NS. Marie is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and another great grandson due in February. Marie enjoyed sewing, porcelain dolls, gardening, knitting and crocheting. She took immense joy knitting small hats and baby blankets, donating them to be given out to newborns in local hospitals. Held tightly in our hearts and forever missed.

Baker Settlement, NS December 18, 1953 - January 12, 2024 Edward Joseph Jesso, 70 years old of Baker Settlement passed away on January 12, 2024 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born on December 18, 1953 t home in Ship Cove, Port au Port NL, to the late Howard and Alma (Young) Jesso. Eddy came to Nova Scotia at the age of 13 and he went on the scallop boats until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Sharon (Veinot) (Tanner) Jesso; son Rodney Jesso; stepson Jonathan (Holly) Tanner; stepdaughter Lisa-Mae (Adam) Eisenhauer; grandson Antonio Jesso; step grandson Austin Tanner; sisters Mercedes (Roy) Dunn, Kentucky, USA; Patricia (Wayne) Lucas, Alice Benoit, Ann Bullen (Carl Benoit), all of NL; several nieces, nephews and godchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Donald and Rodney Jesso; sister-in-law Patsy Benoit. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Liverpool, NS January 12, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Arnold (Jack) Hatt on January 12, 2024 at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Jack was born to Arnold and Kay Hatt in Milton, Nova Scotia. He married Nancy Vaughn and they had three children Jeff, Tony and Valerie. Jack was an active member of his community and served as the Director of the Milton Community Association for a number of years. He retired at age 55 from Bowater Mersey after more than 30 years of service. He had many hobbies including curling, hunting, fishing, shuffling, bowling and horseshoes. He could often be found in his workshop making something for someone in the family. Jack was a craftsman and built everything from lawn chairs and outdoor Christmas decorations to cutting boards and whirlygigs. Each piece was meticulously constructed and built to stand the test of time. Jack was loved by many for his winning personality and quick wit. He would strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone and never lacked for something interesting to talk about. If you had the pleasure of taking a drive anywhere on the South Shore with Jack, you will know that he had a comical story to tell for pretty much every kilometer driven. Usually those stories were about him and old friends or his brothers when they were young and up to no good! Jack’s family brought him tremendous amount of joy, he so loved family visits and gatherings. He brought fun and laughter to each and every event. He loved to travel and looked forward to his winter vacation in Florida or Cuba where he formed many long lasting friendships. In later years he could be counted on to update you ( whether you were a fan or not) on how his beloved Blue Jays baseball team was doing and where the Canadian teams were in the Curling finals. He looked forward to drives in the woods with his son and grandson and was an expert Face timer when it came to his granddaughters who are away from home. Jack is survived by his wife Nancy, son Jeff Hatt (Lesley), daughter Valerie Hawkes (Paul), grandchildren John David Hatt (Jessie), Jan Smith (Aiden), Julie Ann Hatt, Lori Anthony, Chris Hawkes, Abbey Hawkes and Great Grandchildren Dayton and Hayden Robar, sisters Mary Sedran and Pam Crouse (Greg) and brother David Hatt (Bonnie) . Jack was predeceased by his son Tony, grandson Andrew, sister Shirley and brother Richard. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, Nova Scotia. At Jack’s request, there will be no service at this time, no flowers by request, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of choice. Oxford, NS January 21, 1928 - January 11, 2024 Chapman, Ralph - 95, Oxford, passed away January 11th, 2024 in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Earl and Lean (Haliday). For many years, Ralph was a supervisor at Gordon's Greenhouses. He later worked with Bendix Trailer, formerly in Amherst. Ralph enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling and raising hens. He is survived by daughters, Linda (Sherman) Lockhart, Oxford; Barbara (Pete) Russo; Exeter, Ont.; Betty (Gordon) Porter, Oxford Junction; grandchildren, Billy Chapman, Kenny Lockhart, Jennifer Morrison, Mike Ford and Deanna Edwards; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Isabelle Lovely and Shirley Rector; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Grace Black; brother, Bill Chapman; sister, Annie Porter. The family would like to thank the staff at East Cumberland Lodge and MacDiarmid's Funeral Home. Port Hawkesbury, NS August 23, 1938 - January 15, 2024 John Victor Ouellette (Jack) passed away Monday, Jan 15th, 2024, at St. Martha’s hospital, in the company of Peggy, his wife of over sixty years. Jack was born in 1938 to Josephine and Victor Ouellette and raised in Amherstburg Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy, graduated from Canada’s Naval College, Venture and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant. While studying Jack had the chance to try flying, and he decided to become a naval aviator. He trained with the US Navy and after having flown various planes and helicopters from HMCS Bonaventure, and Shearwater he left the Navy in 1963. Jack and Peggy returned to Amherstburg and he studied at the Detroit School of Fine Arts to pursue his love of art. There he was introduced to pottery, and when the couple moved their young family to Dartmouth, Jack graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1972, Peggy was hired by the Richmond District School Board and the Ouellettes moved to Arichat, Cape Breton. It is there that Jack opened his pottery studio and where he practiced and refined his craft for the next 40 years. His work was available in art and craft galleries large and small all over Nova Scotia. Jack was a man of high principles and a strong social justice advocate. He challenged himself, his family, his friends and his community to be better, to consider those less fortunate, and was always willing to express his beliefs to whomever would listen. He was active in his church, an active member of the New Democratic Party and a founding member of the Strait Area Palliative Care Society. Jack battled mental health his whole life and was open and honest about this illness long before our society was comfortable with the subject. Jack and Peggy built a life and a home that was open to so many over the years. Their house in Arichat has been a gathering place for many debates, celebrations, and became a home for a large extended circle of friends. Jack had two sisters, Judy (Joel Bezaire) and Pat (Paul Bondy) and three brothers, Tom (Sandy), Donald, and Tim (who passed away at  age 18). Jack and Peggy lost an infant son, Timothy, and raised two sons John (Linda) and Michael (Monique). His pride and joy were his four grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Shannon and Timmy. Jack will be greatly missed by his family and especially his wife and partner Peggy. His legacy lives on in those he touched over his lifetime and in the thousands of kitchens all over the world where people use and admire his pottery. Point Aconi, NS October 18, 1938 - January 15, 2024 It is with tremendous grief that we announce the sudden passing of Florence Christine Boutilier, age 85, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, on Monday, January 15, 2024. Born in North Sydney on October 18, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Murray) Standing. Florence was a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19, in North Sydney where she played plenty of darts and adored going to the dances. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with some of the other women in her family that got together frequently. She was an avid crocheter, knitter, embroiderer, and sewer. She absolutely loved to swim, especially in the ocean, but also in the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes. She was also a fine cook, but most especially she was a fantastic wife and mother. Family was the most important thing in her life. Florence is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Wallace; her children Lana (Chris) Sachs, Tommy (Brenda) Boutilier, Cheryl (Richard) Abromeit, and Joanne MacEachern; grandchildren Mitchell Eveleigh, Justin Eveleigh, Hayley Eveleigh (Austin Stewart), Sierra Abromeit, Christina (Evan) Leslie; great-grandchildren Layton Leslie, Rowan Leslie, and Dante Eveleigh; brothers Bob Standing and Tommy (Elizabeth) Standing. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Gordon; brother Bill Standing; grandson Michael Sachs; sister-in-law Joyce Standing, and her treasured dog, Holly. Havre Boucher, NS January 16, 2024 White, Anna Marie Elizabeth, age 89, of Havre Boucher, Antigonish County, passed away on January 16, 2024, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Michael Sylvester and Virginia "Venie" (DeCoste) Pettipas. As well as being a wonderful homemaker, Anna worked at the Acadia Fisheries Plant in Mulgrave for several years.  Anna was a huge fan of country music, particularly the oldies, with Charlie Pride being her absolute favourite.  She never missed an opportunity to go dancing, gracing that dance floor with those twinkle toes of hers.  Anna was a huge Habs fan.  On game nights, you’d find her, Sandra, and Chris sitting on the couch together with their Canadiens jerseys on.  She cherished those nights.  Anna adored her grandchildren, and she loved the time she spent with them. She is survived by her children, Billy (Norma Jean), Pomquet; Mary, Port Williams; Theresa (Brian), North Saanich, BC; Donna, Havre Boucher; Angie (Andy), Fort McMurray; Wayne (Debbie), Havre Boucher; and Robert (Nola), Havre Boucher; son-in-law, Chris; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 3 step-great grandchildren; sisters, Margaret, Doris, and Florence; brother, Michael (Zelda); and sisters-in-law, Caroline and Brenda. Predeceased by her daughter, Sandra; brothers, Vincent, Leo, and Benjamin; sisters, Clara and Mary; brothers-in-law, Donald Green, Bill Smith, Cam Munroe, and Denny Malloy. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm and from 10:00am Friday until the time of the funeral in St. Paul’s Centre, Havre Boucher.  Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11:00am in St. Paul’s Church with Reverend Allan MacPhie presiding.  Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Tracadie, in the spring. A special thank you to GARU and the palliative care team at St. Martha's for the warmth and compassion given to Anna in her final days. Kingston, NS January 4, 1952 - January 15, 2024 MANTHORNE, Rita Astrid Ruth, Age 72, of Kingston, Kings Co., passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on January 4, 1952, in Hewingsen, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Waldemar P. and Roht B. (Geb. Muller) Biller. While in Lahr, Germany, Rita was a civilian employee at the Canadian Armed Forces base there. She also worked at the local Canex and later at Home Care. Rita enjoyed time spent camping She loved to collect butterflies and time spent on the beach collecting rocks. Surviving are daughter, Mary-Ann Manthorne; son, Markus (Danielle) Manthorne; grandchildren, Hayden, Tristan, Larissa and Cody; sisters, Anna (Manfred) Jersch and Karen Sulvafi; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, James R. Manthorne. There will be no visitation. Truro, NS January 15, 2024 Maude Emma Grace Mailman – 34, Calgary, formerly of Bible Hill and Truro. It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the tragic passing of our beloved Maude Emma on Monday, January 15, 2024. Maude happily grew up and attended school in Bible Hill and Truro. She was involved in many sports and showed such promise at all that she turned her hand to. Maude easily made many friends throughout her life and cherished them all. She and her sister, Ceilidh, were always together, and wherever they went "those tall Mailman girls" turned heads. Her lifelong friend, Alana Weatherbee, was her most trusted and beloved friend; they just "got" each other, and it was beautiful to watch. Maude was surrounded by her lively loving family, (the Langille/Richard/Matthews family of Londonderry and the Moore/Mailman family of Admiral Rock.) She knew she was loved and was so proud of them all; she gladly received love and freely gave it. Right from the start, Maude knew who she was and where she was going. With an independent "I can do it!" spirit and unwavering confidence, Maude struck out for Calgary, where she met her love, Rob. The girl was strong and capable and knew how to work. Most notably she was strong-willed and softhearted.  This, paired with her immense compassion for the underdog, made her a shining light in a dark world.   Her beautiful smile and contagious laugh are what we need more of.  Well done, Maude! She prepares the way for her parents, Larry and Kenley; beloved sister, Ceilidh; nephew, Sandy; grandparents, Edward Langille and Carlotta; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Maude was predeceased by her partner, Rob; infant brother, Sandy; cherished grandmothers, Sandra Langille, Mary Mailman; great grandmother, Eva Langille; many more loved ones, so dear to our hearts . Oxford, NS January 16, 2024 Gerald Douglas - 81, Oxford passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Springhill, he was the son of the late Douglas McLellan and Mabel (Sutherland) Vance and the beloved husband of Marion (Spence) for almost 40 years. Gerry left Springhill to join the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served in various locations across Canada. After five years in the military, he worked as a Federal Correctional Officer in the Dorchester and Springhill Penitentiaries and then owned and operated a construction company for several years. In 1983 he returned to corrections, becoming the Superintendent of the Cumberland Correctional Facility where he worked until his retirement in 2001. In his spare time, Gerry was always actively involved in his community. He was King Lion of the Oxford Lions Club, a volunteer firefighter, as well as serving on the Oxford Regional School Board, Cumberland Regional School Board, the Cumberland Library Board, and was President of the Cobequid Yorkshire Historical Society. He also served on the Oxford Town Council and has been a Member of the Royal Canadian Legion for the past 25 years. Gerry’s love of snowmobiling led to countless hours of enjoyment and included time as President for many years of the Cumberland Snowmobile Club. He and his wife Marion also spent several enjoyable years square dancing with the Cumberland Twirlers where he also served as Co-President. His real passion was developing the trail system through Oxford.  He was a founding member of the Oxford & Area Trails Association where he also served as Trail Coordinator. His hard work, dedication, and significant contributions to Nova Scotia were recognized in 2015 with Gerry being named Provincial “Volunteer of the Year” for the Town of Oxford.  Other accolades that were bestowed on Gerry include Snowmobiler of the Year 1992, Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia Outstanding Snowmobile Family 2003/2004, Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations Outstanding Snowmobile Family 2005, and Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia Lifetime Achievement Award 2014. He was also recently awarded the Square and Round Dance Federation of Nova Scotia Mayflower Award in 2020 and the Cumberland Trails Association Trail Heroes Award in 2023. Gerald is survived by his wife, Marion; daughters, Kerry (Bruce) Fraser, Cole Harbour; Kelly (Jeff) Harvey, Ottawa, ON; Gail Woodman, Middle Sackville; Beverly (Don) Hood, Charlottetown; brothers, Reg (Cheryl) McLellan, Springhill; Clancy (Margaret) Casey, Parrsboro; Roddie Casey, Moosejaw; grandchildren, Matthew Woodman, Justin Woodman, Keirsten Harvey, Lindsey Hood, Camryn Fraser and Claire Fraser. He was predeceased by wife, Gladys; stepbrothers, Archie and Humphrey "Hump" Casey; and son-in-law, Kirk Woodman. Visitation will be from 2-4 pm Saturday, January 20 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home, Oxford. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21 in Oxford Baptist Church.

Florence, NS April 15, 1946 ~ January 12, 2024 It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Catherine “Cathy” Ann Wallace, age 77, on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Northside Community Guest Home, where she resided for the past 14 years. Born in Florence on April 15, 1946, Cathy was the daughter of the late Jim and Florence (Pearo) Wallace. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary (in infancy) and Sandra Currie and by her special aunt, Mary Arsenault who was like a second Mom to her. Left to mourn her loss are her brother, Jim (Cindy), brother-in-law Trevor Currie (Judy), nephew Andrew (Erin) Wallace and their children Jade, Taylor and Andi; nephew, Matthew (Leigh) Wallace and their daughter Florence; niece, Jennifer (Brian) Hanterman and their children Emma and Piper; nephew, Jeff (Erica) Currie and their children Meredith and Patrick; niece, Rebecca (Keith) Morrison and their children Daniel, Sarah, Ellie and William; nephew, Marc (Megan) Currie. Due to difficulties at birth, Cathy faced many challenges in life but her innocence and childlike nature stole the hearts of all who knew her. Cathy had a gift of bringing out the best in people.  Those around her became softer, gentler and more caring; essentially the best version of themselves. Cathy’s greatest excitement was news that Uncle Murray and Aunt Pat, from Toronto and Uncle Brownie and Aunt Helen, from Boston, were coming home for summer holidays.  Over the years, Cathy took great pleasure from riding the carousel at the Farmer’s Exhibition, helping to decorate a Christmas tree and handing out treats at Halloween. To our neighbors and friends in Florence who were so kind and thoughtful over so many years, know your many gestures were always appreciated. A heartfelt thank you to all the caregivers, nursing, dietary and support staff who provided such wonderful care for Cathy in her later years.  Thanks to all who sent cards or who took the time to visit, especially her brother-in-law, Trevor, who faithfully visited Cathy every Friday.  A sincere thank you to Dr Peter Poulos for his compassionate and dedicated care.  To cousin, Colin, who never missed an opportunity or occasion to show how much he loved her; we are so grateful.  Lastly, we need to thank our parents for raising us in such a loving home.
