Black, Margaret Shirlie

Dartmouth, NS

BLACK, Margaret Shirlie, died peacefully at home on August 28, 2024 in her 91st year.


Shirlie was born in Bracebridge, Ontario to the late Verna and William Armour and raised in Willowdale, Ontario.


She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, the Rev. Canon Charles Black, her children Richard (Zenia, Abbotsford BC), Michael (Calgary, AB), Maureen (Dan Allen, Newmarket ON), Cathy Aspinall (Dartmouth NS), Peter (Carrie-Ann Smith, Brookside NS), and her grandchildren Kelsey Lee, Brennan Black, Christopher Spano, Ryan Aspinall (Lydia) and Leah Aspinall.


A graduate of the Toronto Bible College, Shirlie returned to her studies later in life, earning a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University and an MTh from the Atlantic School of Theology. Shirlie was a hospital chaplain, a VON volunteer, a pastoral care worker for St. Andrews Church Cole Harbour, a spiritual director, a member of the Mothers’ Union, was very involved in the Cursillo Movement, was a Trustee of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust (HMCS Sackville), and a valued contributor to many charitable events. She had a deep interest in the history and genealogy of her family.  


Shirlie was a kind, generous and loving person to everyone she met.


Cremation has already taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Anglican Church of Saint Andrew Cole Harbour on October 12th at 2 pm with a reception to follow.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Andrews Church Cole Harbour or to Feed Nova Scotia.
