- Bower, Joan Marie
Halifax, NS March 05, 1940 - September 16, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Marie Bower (Reynolds), who took her final journey to be with her Lord on September 16, 2025, at the age of 85. Joan's life was filled with love, laughter and a deep commitment to her family and friends. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Joan was born on March 5, 1940, to Alice and Joseph Reynolds, and raised on a farm in Ridgetown, Ontario. She and her little brother, Allen, were inseparable in their childhood, sharing many adventures as they explored the land and fished from ‘the crick’. Later, Joan embraced her role as a loving big sister when her little sister Nancy joined the family. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Joseph Reynolds, and her beloved brother, Allen. She was also preceded in death by her grandson George and granddaughter Hannah, whose absence left a hole in her heart. After graduating from high school, Joan moved to London, Ontario, briefly before heading to Nova Scotia, where she would build a home, a career, and a family that was the centre of her world. Joan was the beloved partner of Harold Walker for over 25 years. In her final months, Harold was her steadfast and tireless caregiver, a testament to the depth of their love. Joan is survived by her partner, Harold Walker; her sister, Nancy (Tom); her children, Dan (Darlene), Patricia, Cynthia and her stepson, Jason. She was the proud grandmother of Emily (Scott), Stephanie (Aaron), Julia, Samuel, Annika and Tricia. Joan will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom were touched by her kindness, warmth and generosity. In her professional life, Joan had a fulfilling and successful career at ManuLife Financial, where she served as an executive assistant in leadership. Known for her sharp mind, her eagerness to learn and her hard work, Joan earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Joan loved sharing time with others through her many hobbies. She enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, bowling and, in her later years, being part of lively dart leagues. Joan was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion, where she spent countless evenings dancing, laughing and creating lasting memories with her friends. It was there that she met Harold, her partner and greatest companion. Joan's memory will live on through her loving smile, her molasses cookies, the treats she always had ready for her grandkids, her warm hugs and her generous spirit. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel special and valued and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her. We are grateful that Joan is now at peace, reunited with her Lord and her loved ones. Though she will be missed beyond measure, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire us all. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Veterans Memorial Hospital 3 East for their unwavering care and support for Joan over the last many weeks. A celebration of Joan’s life will take place on Sunday, September 28 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Fairview Legion, 50 Hillcrest St, Halifax, B3N 2X5. There will be a short service starting at 1:00PM, with refreshments to follow. Private interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Joan’s memory are invited to consider a donation to Canadian Cancer Society or The Royal Canadian Legion Fairview #142. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." – Psalm 4:8
- Brown, Garth F. L.
Dartmouth, NS October 30, 1952 - September 05, 2025 Garth F. L. Brown, born in Truro in 1952, passed away in the presence of family on September 5, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents Horace and Annie (Hall) Brown, brothers Phillip, and Orvin and his sister Susan. Garth survived by his wife Carolyn (Stoddard), daughters Laura Brewer (Scott) and Theresa Colbert (Steven), stepsons Curtis Cox (Jenny) and Michael Cox (Lisa), stepdaughters Katherine Johnson (Garry) and Jennifer Cox (Craig), and his grandchildren Toriana, Skylar, Carter, Hunter, Lexi, Joshua, Jasmine, Lucas, Reid, Brooklyn and Sadie. He was also survived by his siblings Carol, Alan (Joyce), Eric (Hendrika), Lynn (Donald), Mae (Earl), Sylvia, Kathy, Norman (Elaine), and Ramona and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Our hearts ache as our family grieves the loss of a great man! He was a loving son, brother, uncle, husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, cousin, and friend to many. As time goes on and the pain fades away, we will cherish each and every memory that was made with him! Garth was a jack of all trades and was a man of many talents who could fix almost anything, often thinking outside the box (to the point of sometimes being scary - a true MacGyver). He was especially known for giving roses (sometimes 80+ at a time) and for always having candy to share. He loved deeply and without question. He was the type of man that would drop anything to help someone, to hug you (he had the most amazing hugs), to listen, give sage advice, and stand up for you. You didn't need to be family or a friend for him to help you. The strangers that he helped often became friends. He was magnetic, kind, loving, loyal, funny, generous, thoughtful and he was a huge softy! Garth was a giving person, and even in death his giving continues as the donation of his body will touch the lives of as many as 400 students. Through his selfless gift, he has ensured that his legacy will live on by assisting in the advancement of medical research and education, providing future healthcare professionals with the opportunity to learn and innovate. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital (4 East and 5 East) and would also like to express our deepest appreciation for the team at Melville Lodge. Your kindness, compassion, and dedication to Garth’s comfort and care in his final days will forever be in our hearts. Thank you for being a shining light during our darkest times. There is a Celebration of Life for Garth scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2025, from 6:00 pm and 8:00pm, at the South Woodside Community Centre located at 5 Everette Street in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions in Garth’s memory be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada. Garth F. L. Brown

- Pearson, Dennis Gordon
Antigonish, NS October 01, 1938 - July 31, 2025 Pearson, Dennis Gordon, Antigonish, was born on October 1st, 1938 and passed away peacefully on July 31st, 2025. This is his story in his own words… By the above date, it would seem my ‘best before’ date has expired. It must be by the grace of God that I’ve lived this long. I was born in the ‘Dirty Thirties’, number four in a family of nine. My mother and father survived the Spanish Flu, the First World War and the Great Depression. They started a family around 1934 in the Whitney Pier area of Sydney, NS. I recall that the pollution from the steel plant and the coal piers left a coat of iron ore and coal dust on everything; even the clothes my mother washed by hand. Every house in Sydney burned either coal or coke to keep warm. Most men smoked cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, or chewed tobacco. We swam in Sydney Harbour even though the sewers emptied into it and survived over 18 common childhood diseases. All thirty children in our class shared a spoon to take the cod liver oil given to us by the Sisters. The darkness of the Second World War descended upon us and the food rations and stamp books given to families limited the amount of food items we could buy. This continued from 1942 to July of 1954, and it was a great burden for our struggling parents to provide food for all of us. If I ever needed the reassurance of the immense good there is in people, I had but to look at my three sisters – Brenda, Rhodena (Chickie) and my late sister, Anita. Their incredible willingness to help their families and friends over the years was inspiring to me. I would not have known joy without you, my sisters – true gems- rare and precious. I loved you all of my life! I spent a brief, but rewarding time with the religious order, the Graymoor Friars and then was privileged to work at St. Martha’s Hospital for the Sisters of St. Martha for 30 years as Chef and Assistant Director of Food Services. I reflect on the amazing number of family, friends, neighbors and buddies who passed before me and who will be there to greet me in Heaven. Although, if God doesn’t have a sense of humor, I could be in trouble! Thank you to those who loved me and to those who cared…God bless. Dennis is survived by his children and stepchildren; Darlene, Howard, Glen (Lori), Ann, and Mike (Trudy); sisters, Brenda and Chickie (Terry); grandchildren, Craig (Rachelle), Amanda, Kayla, and Natasha; great-granddaughter, Haisley May; several nieces and nephews; and his Keating Court ‘Family’. Besides his parents, Cecil and Jane (Mombourquett) Pearson, Dennis was predeceased by sisters Rhodena Pearson (in childhood); Anita MacKenzie and her husband Thomas; brother-in-law, Dave Linton, brothers Ronald and Aussie Pearson; three siblings in infancy; and nephew, Terrence MacKinnon. Most notably though, Dennis lost his beautiful wife, Joan (Hadley) Pearson just over a year ago. Once he had their affairs settled, he let it be known that his wish was to join her. "I’ve had a good life – a lot of laughs. I’m ready to go and be with Joan. I miss my wife." To say we will miss Dad, Papa, Dennis, Denny, ‘Dunk’, is an understatement. He was one of a kind. But, knowing he’s with Joan again makes our loss a little bit easier to bear. There will be a graveside service held at St. Ninian’s Cemetery on Tuesday, August 5th at 4:00 pm. Family flowers only, please. Any donations made in Dennis’ memory may be sent to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Palliative Care Program - What a tremendous group of people they are!
