- DUNN, Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Wayne
Whitney Pier, NS August 12, 1959 It is with very heavy hearts that we, the family of Kenneth Wayne Dunn, born August 12, 1959, announce his untimely passing with his family by his side and in the hearts of those that couldn’t be here with him in the end, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Kenny was the son of the late Phillip and Blanch (Rowe) Dunn of Whitney Pier. Growing up in Whitney Pier in the 60’s and 70’s Kenny would have been known to many for his rough and tough exterior but to those who knew him best knew him for his kindness and willingness to help in any way he could, that’s not to say he wouldn’t kick someone in the arse if they needed it or told them how it was, even if they weren’t asking for his opinion. Kenny met his ‘sweetheart’ Gail at a very young age and together they spent the last 50 years creating their beautiful family. Kenny spent many years volunteering at events and coaching many of his children’s sports whether it be hockey or soccer creating memories to last a lifetime, not only for his children but to their teammates as well. To this day, coach Kenny is talked about at any get togethers or gatherings with great memories from the kids spanning across many generations- through fond memories and stories it was clear the impact he had on so many and the respect he gained from those he coached and guided along the way. Kenny’s coaching style, lets face it would not be acceptable today but the reminiscing from the young kids he coached to the now adults proved he was an incredible and unforgettable role mode. Kenny had a laugh like no other and quite a unique sense of fashion- not caring if he ever matched or followed any trends. Most recently Kenny has been creating these same types of memories with his grandchildren, specifically at their sporting events- Papa didn’t miss a hockey, basketball or soccer game or tryout and didn’t mind telling a coach or ref when they weren’t doing things right, sometimes landing him a spot outside. Kenny spent many years working at the Steel Plant in the carpentry shop as one of the youngest Steel workers until its closure. Kenny would then spend the remainder of his working days building, fixing or replacing just about anything or everything he could to provide for his family and a proud member of LUINA local 1115. Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Gail (MacNeil) who over the past seven weeks has shown us all what true love really is; their three amazing children, Chris (Karrie MacLeod) and their boys, Jacob and Joshua, Sydney, Robert (Krista MacIntyre) and their two daughters, Hannah and Clara, Pembrook Ont., and Tasha (Curt MacKenzie) and their children, Malcom, his newest sweetheart Stevie Lynn and baby Dunn-MacKenzie on the way, Beaver Cove; two bonus granddaughters, Kori Lund and Breanna French; brother, Philly (Susan) and their children, Nicole and Steven; brother-in-law, Brian ( Sharon) MacNeil; sister-in-law, Carol (Wayne) and Karen (Brian) Besso; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and close friends. Besides his parents, Kenny was predeceased by his sister Charmaine; sisters-in-law, Valerie and Darlene; mother and father in-law, John, Viola MacNeil and nephew, Terry. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. In Respect to his wishes as an organ donor he is now giving the gift of sight to others. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Kenny Dunn will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 6-8 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 8 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. - MacNeil (O'Handley), Teresa Marie
Halifax / Sydney Mines, NS May 28, 1928 - July 01, 2025 Hard to put this into words, but Teresa Marie (O’Handley) MacNeil who was so lively, quick witted, full of sass and a true Cape Bretoner passed peacefully at Northwood Terrace with her daughter, by her side, on July 1st 2025, at the age of 97. Teresa was never shy to offer her opinion on any matter or issue, politics included. She could share a lively conversation with anyone of any age up until the time she passed. She had a passion for shopping and loved a good bargain. Of course, shopping at the Mayfower Mall and on Charlotte Street in Sydney, was also a social experience for Teresa. Teresa was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Sydney Mines, where she belonged to the Catholic Women’s League (CWL). She attended Notre Dame School and completed Mount St. Joseph Business Program in North Sydney. Upon her retirement from the Government, (due to her marriage in 1952) she was driven to continue working. Teresa helped her husband in his photography studio. She volunteered her time with the Salvation Army, Brownies and Girl Guides, the Northside Speech and Music Festivals and the Northside Theatrical Society. For many years she wrote obituaries for the Cape Breton Post. Teresa was determined, full of grit and never let her Polio keep her from living life to the fullest. She will also be remembered for her baking and always opening her home to family and friends, including her nieces and nephews from Upstate New York, who spent many summers in Cape Breton. Fortunately, we had an opportunity to celebrate Teresa on her 97th birthday with family and friends across many generations, where she got to enjoy sharing her special recipes and fond memories. There is no doubt that the Northwood team gave so much to Teresa during her stay. They made her feel like there was always something to look forward to. With their assistance, she was able to keep her love of style as they helped her choose her outfits each day. Teresa’s family so appreciate the contributions of the Northwood team and the wonderful care she received in her final days. Early into their married life he & Helen set roots in northern Quebec, developing memories and friendships which always stayed in their hearts. With Bologna sandwiches in hand he loved life on the road, sharing stories with fellow truckers, singing along to classic country songs, and giving detailed directions. At home Joe loved sharing moments with family and friends. Christmas always brought a sparkle to his eye as it meant the family was together. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Kerry; children, Ryan, Kate, and Ben; brothers, Steve (Marina) Payson and Brad (Jenny) Payson. Jane was so many things to so many people. The most amazing mother, wife and friend. She had an incredible life. Jane was strong, smart and funny. She was brave and independent. She touched many lives with her intelligence and her empathy. Her husband, Kerry, was her best friend, and her kids meant everything to her, and she made sure they knew it. She made them laugh every day and was always there for them during tough times and celebrated their successes as she would her own. She was a talented rug hooker, a wonderful cook and enjoyed collecting vinyl records. Jane loved her horse, Holiday, and spent every moment she could with him. After he died in 2023, she traveled to Alberta to find and bring home her new horse, Forest, a five year old Rocky Mountain, who she loved just as much. She spent every morning working with him with her expert trainer, Amy, and taking him for walks. And when she wasn’t patiently preparing him for the moment when she could take him out riding the beautiful network of trails around "the barn" where she kept him at Hobby Horse Farm, she was walking with her many good friends there. Her love for her family and friends was absolute and unconditional, and we will miss her so much. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Hope for Wildlife or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
