- Bishop, Mary Jean
Amherst, NS July 12, 1931 - September 29, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jean Bishop, a beloved daughter, mother, aunt, great aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend, after 94 remarkable years, on September 29, 2025 at Sunnyside Longterm care facility. Daughter of Charles (predeceased April 24, 1988), and Jemima (Mina - predeceased June 3, 1970), Mary is survived by brother Charles Jr. (Marguerite), living a life full of adventure, joy, and countless cherished connections with more friends than we could ever name. Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on July 12, 1931, Mom carried the love of the East Coast in her heart, though the bright lights of Toronto soon called her name. From there, her journey unfolded with travel, fashion, entrepreneurial spirit (as the proud owner of Our Little Shop in Saint George), and endless exploration. Never one to settle for long, her adventurous soul made a home in many communities and cities throughout her life. An avid skater, she was often compared to the great Barbara Ann Scott—and never let us forget it as the years went on. Her passion for skiing also led her to become an instructor on the slopes of Chicopee, where she shared her love of the sport with others and forged even more lasting connections—always ready for the next trip, ski poles in tow. Above all, Mom’s greatest joy was found in her family. She treasured every moment with her children, grandchildren, and lived to hear the exciting news that she recently became a Great Grandma. Mom filled our lives with laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love—leaving behind memories that will continue to brighten our hearts for the rest of our lives. A woman of deep faith, Mom believed in the power of Jesus and looked forward to finding peace with the Lord. This faith gave her strength, comfort, and hope throughout her life, and now we take comfort knowing she is at rest in his arms. Over the years, we were blessed to witness her strength, independence, and unwavering spirit. We will forever carry these gifts with us. You will be dearly missed, Grams, but your light shines on in all of us. We promise to continue carrying the torch, striving each day to “change the world”—just as you inspired us to do. (Queue Johnny Reid). With all our eternal love: Daughter Joy (forever in spirit and in our hearts), Granddaughter Ferris (Dave) and great-granddaughters Charlotte and Lucy, Son Glen (Martine) and grand-fur-baby Saydah, Son Steve (Leighe), granddaughter Amberleighe (Jarad) and great-grandson Callum, granddaughter Brooklynn (John-Wesley) and great-grandson Theodore, grandson Coleton (Sierra), Daughter Lynne (Robert) and granddaughter Abbey. Special thanks to the loving staff at Sunnyside Longterm Care facility - the journey would not have been as comforting without all of the amazing teams, especially Christine (extremely gifted nurse practitioner), who was so attentive to Mary's every need, and Pearletta from Buttonworks, who was at Mary's and our side supporting her comfort and care needs until the last moment. We promise to honor your request - love one another and look after each other's needs every day. You are an angel Pearletta, a true angel. Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at a later date in Mary's hometown of Amherst, Nova Scotia. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Sunnyside Foundation or the Canadian Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family. Next Spring, when the buds on your plants are popping and your hydrangeas and roses are showing signs of a new beginning, pause and think of Mary; she was a true lover of all that was flowers.

- Carmichael, Miricia Kathleen (Keen)
Spryfield, NS October 12, 1959 - September 28, 2025 With broken hearts, we share the sudden passing of our beloved Keen. Keen had a gift for making every person she met feel seen, loved, and valued. Her devotion to her family was endless and unwavering as not only a sister, daughter, wife, and stepmother, but also a steady support, confidant, and friend to so many. Keen shared an especially close bond with each of her eight siblings, and her nieces and nephews grew up knowing her love as deeply as if she were a second mother. With her sharp wit and playful sarcasm, she kept us laughing, even in life hardest moments. This past year was an unexpected blessing. We were able to welcome her home, where she spent time in her happiest place. She found joy in kayaking, cherished precious time with her family, and took one last walk along Sugar Loaf Beach, a place she held close to her heart. Keen is now reunited with her husband, John Carmichael; her parents, Iris and Harold Wilkie; and her in-laws, Rolane Daisly, Theodore Fricker, Gloria Arapis Short, and Bonnie Wilkie. She leaves behind a family who will forever carry her love in their hearts: stepdaughters Ashley and Clair Carmichael; her siblings Wanda MacKinnon, Cindy Fricker, Wilda MacDonald (Buddy), Sheldon Shorty Wilkie, Gar Wilkie, Blair Wilkie, Sherry Duguay (Don), and Brent Wilkie (Arnessa); along with her many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews who adored her Heidi MacDonald, Jamie Fricker, Phillip MacKinnon (Lyndon, Nathan, Ethan), Jody MacDonald, Christian LeFort (Lilly), Daniel Wilkie (Rolane), Cody Wilkie (Hanna), Rya Duguay (Oliver), Blair Duguay, Jacob Wilkie (Charlie), Jade Wilkie, Adrianna Wilkie, and Kenny Wilkie (Mason). Keen’s absence leaves an unfillable space in our lives, but her love, laughter, and light will live on in each of us forever. At Keen’s request there will be no public service. Anyone wishing to honour Kathleen may make a donation to Pinkalicious north of Smokey in her name. We appreciate your love and support during this difficult time.
- MacLeod, Alfred Wallace “Alfie”
Sydney River, NS March 10, 1956 - September 28, 2025 We, the family of Alfred Wallace “Alfie” MacLeod, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, September 28, 2025, in Hospice Cape Breton surrounded by his loving family. Born March 10, 1956, in Sydney River, he was a son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth (Kennedy) MacLeod. At the age of 16, after growing up in Sydney River, Alfie moved to Stirling to live with his aunt and uncle to attend high school in St. Peters where he boarded through the week and looked forward to seeing Shirley on the weekends. He attended his first political meeting in high school and was hooked. In his grade 12 year, Alfie was class president, valedictorian, and was awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Medal and the Burke’s Medal. After high school, he spent a season as a soldier at the Fortress of Louisbourg before starting his lengthy career with Devco where he manned the Sheep Project, worked underground, was in the lab and finished as their safety officer. In the fall of ‘95, Dad’s love for politics drove him to put his name on the ballot, resulting in his first term serving as MLA for the constituents of Cape Breton West. In 1999, under the Honorable John Hamm’s government, Dad ran the Cape Breton Cabinet office. He then was Community Relations Manager for the Sydney Steel Corporation. In the spring of 2006, the political fire was burning in Dad’s belly once again and a successful election resulted holding his seat until retiring from provincial politics in July of 2019. During this time, Dad was caucus chair and from 2007 - 2009 was elected by his peers to be Speaker of the House. In 2017, Dad became a Justice of the Peace adding to his lengthy list of skills which allowed him the pleasure of performing the ceremonies at both Jessica and Daniel’s weddings that very year. Adding his love of auctions (or maybe just raising tons of money for every charity, school, and person in need), weekends were full of love and community passion, two of the fundamentals that drove Dad’s inspiring dedication to his community, to Cape Breton, and that he instilled in us kids and then grandkids. During the years of public service, visiting church halls, legions, fire halls, schools, ushering from meetings, to speaking engagements and legislature sessions, Mom kept life moving at home. As the kids grew, so did their family, adding two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, six beautiful grandkids, who were the absolute loves of his life and, in a blink, Alfie MacLeod, MLA became Pops, which at the end of the day, was his most favorite title. Dad’s sun rose and set on his beautiful grandkids. The worst of days were turned around by any one of their happy faces. Meetings turned into basketball and baseball games, conference calls to drama performances, legislature sittings to impromptu sleepovers and he couldn’t have dreamed of a better reality. Dad was known for bragging of winning the Cape Breton Lottery. All of his kids and grandkids were here on our island, and could be all in one place within the hour. Family was everything and Dad knew he had it all. Alfie is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley (MacDonald); daughters, Sandra (Solomon) Linklater and Jessica (Joe) Stonehouse, both of Howie Centre; son, Daniel (Amber) MacLeod, Gabarus Lake; honorary daughter, Kim Collins and her son, Cameron Collins; grandchildren, Logan, Keigan, Emma, Nolan, Rylee and Lauchie; sister, Valerie (Steve) MacIntosh, Etobicoke, Ont; mother-in-law, Pearl MacDonald; sister-in-law, Susan (Rick) Charbonneau; and niece and nephews. In addition to his parents, Alfie was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Blair; father-in-law, Allister MacDonald; and step-father, Jack Skinner. Visitation will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River on Friday, October 3rd from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Our Lady of Fatima Church on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m. followed by a reception in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River Hall (on the lower level of the church). Interment will take place in Zion Cemetery, Gabarus Lake, at a later date. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the health care professionals whose compassion and care allowed Dad to remain comfortable and enjoy his family to the end. Memorials may be made to the Horizon Achievement Centre or the Two Rivers Wildlife Park.

George was born on March 15, 1942, to Dorothy (Ferrand) McDonald and Gordon McDonald in Halifax, NS. George met the apple of his eye, Janet (McDougall), at the age of 12 in Maitland, NS, and finally married her on June 6, 1964, after several summer visits, hundreds of letters, and many years of dating. Together they had a beautiful life built on their shared passions, close-knit family, great adventures, and unwavering love for each other. In his career, George was never afraid to take on a challenge. Open to moving across the country and around the world, George was a business leader of great integrity and vision. One of his proudest accomplishments was becoming an executive at Imperial Oil where he led teams in Calgary, Malaysia, Russia, and Azerbaijan. As he would say, this North Hants Rural High boy had “done good”. He remained passionate about traveling and learning to the end. Always with a twinkle in his eye, kindness in his heart, and quick wit, George was loved deeply by his family. To his grandchildren, he was “Papa,” the one who never said no to ice cream, who came back from the store with twenty things when he was sent for one, and who delighted in having their help on the John Deere tractor for whatever task needed to be done. His generosity was boundless, his laughter infectious, and his love of music and family filled every gathering with joy. Competitive in the best and most playful ways, George had a gift for turning life into something fun, meaningful, and full of love. He leaves behind not just memories, but the legacy of a man who lived with open hands, a full heart, and a spirit that will always be remembered. - Brown, Garth F. L.
Dartmouth, NS October 30, 1952 - September 05, 2025 Garth F. L. Brown, born in Truro in 1952, passed away in the presence of family on September 5, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents Horace and Annie (Hall) Brown, brothers Phillip, and Orvin and his sister Susan. Garth survived by his wife Carolyn (Stoddard), daughters Laura Brewer (Scott) and Theresa Colbert (Steven), stepsons Curtis Cox (Jenny) and Michael Cox (Lisa), stepdaughters Katherine Johnson (Garry) and Jennifer Cox (Craig), and his grandchildren Toriana, Skylar, Carter, Hunter, Lexi, Joshua, Jasmine, Lucas, Reid, Brooklyn and Sadie. He was also survived by his siblings Carol, Alan (Joyce), Eric (Hendrika), Lynn (Donald), Mae (Earl), Sylvia, Kathy, Norman (Elaine), and Ramona and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Our hearts ache as our family grieves the loss of a great man! He was a loving son, brother, uncle, husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, cousin, and friend to many. As time goes on and the pain fades away, we will cherish each and every memory that was made with him! Garth was a jack of all trades and was a man of many talents who could fix almost anything, often thinking outside the box (to the point of sometimes being scary - a true MacGyver). He was especially known for giving roses (sometimes 80+ at a time) and for always having candy to share. He loved deeply and without question. He was the type of man that would drop anything to help someone, to hug you (he had the most amazing hugs), to listen, give sage advice, and stand up for you. You didn't need to be family or a friend for him to help you. The strangers that he helped often became friends. He was magnetic, kind, loving, loyal, funny, generous, thoughtful and he was a huge softy! Garth was a giving person, and even in death his giving continues as the donation of his body will touch the lives of as many as 400 students. Through his selfless gift, he has ensured that his legacy will live on by assisting in the advancement of medical research and education, providing future healthcare professionals with the opportunity to learn and innovate. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital (4 East and 5 East) and would also like to express our deepest appreciation for the team at Melville Lodge. Your kindness, compassion, and dedication to Garth’s comfort and care in his final days will forever be in our hearts. Thank you for being a shining light during our darkest times. There is a Celebration of Life for Garth scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2025, from 6:00 pm and 8:00pm, at the South Woodside Community Centre located at 5 Everette Street in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions in Garth’s memory be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada. Garth F. L. Brown
